Following the huge success of his debut album ‘Caligo’, Spor has hooked up with powerhouse producer Memtrix to present ‘Memtrix & Spor: Darkest Hours’ forthcoming on Sotto Voce/Lifted Music.  The track will be released on 14th September. 

‘Darkest Hours’ begins with a stream of deep cinematic melodies progressing into a melting pot of cutting-edge bass sonics and crisp drum grooves; accompanied by ambient vocals. The B-side entitled ‘Super Trace’ unfolds as a dark roller combined with sharp percussion sounds, certain to get a dance floor moving.

With over 1 million views on his track ‘All You Are’ on YouTube and over 5 releases under his belt at the age of 19, this is the start of a long journey in the world of drum & bass for Memtrix. "Working with Spor has definitely been an eye opening and insightful experience,” he says, “but I think more than that it's just been really fun. It always seems really natural and fluent in the studio and we bounce ideas off each other really well I think. Obviously it's an absolute privilege for me to work with such a household name who's work I respect so much, and this release is something I'm really proud of and excited about."

Memtrix & Spor - Darkest Hours

Since the beginning of his career, the name Audio has been a synonym for unmatched power and a colossal presence within the drum & bass community. Competition have crumbled beneath his output, with the producer quickly becoming revered for not only his sound, but for the dark, thematic energy he brought to every live set across the globe.  Whether it’s causing bass-lead devastation at renowned festivals, like the Czech Republic’s Let it Roll, or the darkest corner of notorious London hotspots, there’s no denying one of the genre’s most profound overlords. 

And following the monumental success of his ‘Nil By Mouth’ EP, which saw him rise to an even more prominent position across the cyber world (amassing thousands of streams within days, despite being uploaded onto a brand new Soundcloud account), Audio is making a welcomed return. 

‘Shatterdome’ is stocky, imposing and forcibly holds you in its grasp. One of the most sought after, climatic anthems since it was first premiered within one of his infamous live shows and rinsed from Ibiza to the US by Andy C, ‘Shatterdome’ manipulates cinematic samples and pushes you into an apocalyptic soundscape.  Quaking with every drum roll, it’s a techy thumper which propels you through on steroids. A fresh cut elaborating on the producer’s impeccable standards, this single is undeniably fierce.

Just as intimidating is the double AA side ‘2 Stroke’. A pounding riddim underpinned by a bassline that reverberates through, it’s gradually built upon with a clanking cowbell before breaking into a synth like structure. Demonstrating a complexity which bares its teeth, whilst being indisputably intricate, Audio presents a flipside worthy of its predecessor.
So once again, it’s time for Audio to lay siege on your aural synapses; no other individual does it like the underground overlord.

In case you don't know, WAR is essentially the black ops division of Technique Recordings. The imprint only emerges from cover on rare occasions and, when it does, it always signals the delivery of a heavy payload of explosive dancefloor material. This particular mission demonstrates that the name Worldwide Audio Recordings is no idle boast. This unit has truly international credentials.

The USA represents in the form of LA-based duo Kronology's opener, “Vertigo”. Portentous G-funk arpeggios meld with a dread-laden low-end pad and an eerie vocal sample to give warning of danger ahead. Then a warping build delivers us into the midst of  tough sweeping bass and gym-ripped drums. This is hardbody music to keep the dancefloor energised.

Then Ukraine's in the house, as MaxNRG's “50,000” rolls through. This one's the sound of a producer refusing to compromise on their quirky individual style. The pizzicato of the intro weaves into a progression of harmonic tones and the pitch-twisted vocal element that gives the track its name. Pop-and-lock drums and swathes of mid-range drive, punctuated with classic MPC-style hits give this an irresistible groove.

Of course, the UK isn't left out of the party. The prolific North Base crew come scientific with “Extrimus”, a dark brew of technoid ingredients. An unsettling intro, built from ominous tones and an unpredictable chord sequence, gives way to a surprisingly melodic drop. Riffs and pieces of riff fold and collapse around each other as bass and drum deliver the heartbeat of the track. This is edge-of-the-seat music, with the unexpected around every corner.

Then Erb N Dub steps up with “Payback”. This is dense, spectrum-filling production. Uncompromisingly tough beats and bass modulations that are going to get even the most stalwart wall-hangers moving, combined with chase-scene stabs give this a relentless energy. The addition of rising alarm-call lines and a lighters-in-the-air breakdown means that this one warrants playing right to the second drop.

Spain comes correct with Gradual's neural workout “Psychodelicious”. An impenetrable web of sound assaults the senses in the intro, with dialogue fighting for attention with oscillating tones on all sides. The drop rips the atmosphere to shreds, reconfiguring it into a stripped-down, almost dub-like arrangement. Stridently militant drums keep time as the grime and filth of the bass drives the track onwards. This is one to drop to darken up the rave.

Fighting the rear-guard action is Austria's Infrasonik, with “The Horror”. In the distance, a disturbing chime pattern heralds the approach of something sinister. That's delivered by the rising inflection of the build, leading to a drop which provides no relief. The rhythmic interplay of drums and bass keeps cranking up the heart-rate of the track, until the momentary calm of the breakdown. Infrasonik have delivered on their title, fully evoking ever-increasing tension which is going to give this a guaranteed place in creative selectors' sets.

This EP shows off both the international and interconnected nature of the scene. Showing off musicality, technical expertise and the variety of individual takes on rave-aimed D&B,
“Cubic” provides an insight into the minds of some of the hottest producers from around the world. And it'll destroy some dancefloors in the process.

Needing little introduction, and having scored a Beatport number one with latest single ‘Shatterdome’, this fresh cut from Audio yet again reinstates his dominance. Slick and standing with fortress-like tightness, these two sonic slabs of bass bear down on you aggressively. Then again, what can you expect, from one of the most resounding names within the genre; even from his very first output? 

‘Make it Happen’ is bulking and rolls forward like a freight train. Snapping between breaks and bass that bulges with power, it’s a muscular number which brings another meaning to ‘dancefloor anthem’.  Broken up by interjecting sample, frequently pounding loops of distortion and warbling beat patterns pull you deeper and deeper into the mix. Pausing before ascending yet again into all-out chaos, Audio proves his intimidating production standards are upheld with every release.  

Instantly recognisable from the vocal snippet, ‘Napalm’ promises to explode on impact. Detonating crowds at festivals this summer, from Prague’s Let it Roll to stages across Europe, it’s a chunky, clunking record which has already caused devastation across the continent. Distorted and with a warbling, low frequency, prepare to be taken by the synapses into drum & bass’ murkiest waters.

Yet again, Audio demonstrates his unbridled capabilities. Gritting his teeth and once again proving a darker edge to the Ram imprint, this presents one more step towards an Audio LP…

Two talents, one from Lithuania and the other from Estonia. Together Marius and Mark make a formidable team. Recently emerging from the European underground scene, they tie together the darkest aspects that arena has to offer. And this brand new release epitomizes not just the work which Logam's prominent label has to offer, but also what Marius Kirjutaja and Mark Bogdanovas are about to bring to the world of drum & bass.

Going under the pseudonym Mean Teeth, they expose another level of destruction to your speakers and with the help of tastemaker Trilo they're about to prove unstoppable. With only four previous releases under their belt, once before on US torch holder Santoku as well as Bad Taste and Plasma, it's time to fully indulge in the sound they've established from their very first output.

Featuring a nastily foreboding intro, ‘Hatch' leaves you freefalling through revving bass and crushing snare. Its bassline zips and tears through the composition with every layer gradually bolstering the mix. You're made acutely aware that these guys mean business and they're not about to go easy on you. It's the type of techy, no holds barred drum & bass which has made the genre so overpowering in recent months.

Like a science fiction movie, ‘Leviathan' focuses primarily on atmospherics throughout your introduction. Before long, you become enamoured by the crunchiness of its bass riddims, with each pad adding another stepping stone within its configuration. It's lumbering, whilst still swift in the way it throttles your aural senses and you'll find yourself unable to untangle yourself from its grasp.

Already showing themselves to be of a high caliber with their previous two tracks, ‘Escape Pod' follows the same pattern, fluctuating quickly between frequencies and elevating bass notes. Crushing snare adds another sphere, once again returning to those carefully spaced out rifts which are slowly becoming their signatures.

Then lastly, comes ‘Gun Squad'. Featuring Trilo, who's already established himself amongst his competitors, they combine to create an unfathomable force. Trilo brings the pain, demonstrating why he's so revered whilst he merges his production style with Mean Teeth to exorcise a demon of musical proportions. Together, they round up an EP that'll launch their reputation, as well as bring Santoku even further onto the forefront.

He fled without words from his workplace, the other labourers around glancing quickly up at their fellow tearing across the derelict site of their toil. Ducking between the scaffolds, his hands clawing wretchedly at his heavy form, as his insides churned and wave after wave of pure violence washed through him. He found the entrance, gasping with relief and pain, before dropping swiftly into the cave beneath the foundation and falling starkly into the dim blackness of the tunnels below. Writhing on the cold stone ground, he felt it ripping through his back and up the side of his face, his eyes glazing then filling with the fire of a pure primal energy as he arched his head back and let out a tearing sound of unleashed psychic tearing and the breaking of his mind. It had him in its grasp, claws ripping through his hands – its presence overtaking him and unveiling his true SHAPESHIFTER nature.

AKOV follows up his recent initial foray on the label with a solid step into the EATBRAIN fold in the form of the SHAPESHIFTER EP. Comprising 4 tracks of exquisitely dynamic neurofunk and experimental beats that dares to dive between tempos and deliver an entirely fresh take on the genre. From the outset with title track SHAPESHIFTER, a curve ball hits swift, as a straight intro leads into a drop that stretches reality and deviates between spacious reese action and busy percussion, before heavily reglitching itself into a deliciously wonky form. ABRAXAS leads a more epic path with a shimmering, beautiful intro infused with ethnic aesthetics that gives way to an entirely punishing machinegun drop that only pauses to reload and issue a heavy staccato bass cannon. With GAMES WITH GOD featuring THE CLAMPS, the metallic nature of the drums edges up a notch and the vibe leans toward a more sinister but rolling edge. FIRST CONTACT turns the tempo way down to 128 but elevates the attitude to a new level, delivering a chugging and brutish stepper of a tune that carries its neuro core effectively to the vein.

The range of ideas within the Shapeshifter EP serves as a technical breath of fresh air to a genre that’s build on the concept of progression and experimentation. Akov delivers the manifesto of an artist intent on pushing the sound further, delivered on a label at the forefront of futuristic d&b.

You’re first brought into title-track ‘Mirror Image’, a record which leaves little to the imagination within its build up and instead goes all guns blazing straight into its first climatic drop. The cut begins to ramp up with a quick fire speed, featuring a sonic technology that is as intimidating as it is clear cut. It’s a standard Binary hold up for the EP’s remaining three tracks, still going for the throat with every pounding section of drums. ‘Stable’ is slightly more reminiscent of the old-school, with heavy swathes of percussion and a meandering bassline. It presents their neuro-infused touches whilst also opening up a different side of their musical vocabulary. ‘Forced’ comes next, sounding anything but, and giving a softer approach to its sudden explosions of composition. You’re gradually submerged within the aural world of Binary, before every looping drum pattern grabs at you with more and more urgency. Its jiving hook is prevalent throughout, creating club-like atmospherics. Then finally delivered is ‘Transiet’, offering a flipside to their signature and drawing out for a more euphoric set of instrumentals. As a whole, the EP proves the aptitude of Optiv and how he continually strives to find the very best currently within the drum & bass community. Binary are a definite example of that.


Dutch drum & bass producers MissionControl
and Kappie came together last year to present a totally new pseudonym, having both spent time capitalising on their individual skill sets. Their collaborative project Binary sees a fusion of uncompromising, hard hitting production and oozing dancefloor appeal, whilst remaining consistent in their output with an unbridled creativity. Their discovery by fans across the 170bpm spectrum did not go unnoticed by its groundbreaking imprints, with none other than Optiv’s Red Light Records stepping forward to sign their most recent high quality EP. Having already released on the likes of Sample Genie, Raving Panda Records, ION Music, Rustout Records and more, their distinct, forward thinking sound has already paved the way for their forthcoming success. And in being in such high demand, the ‘Mirror Image’ EP is another step towards the unblinking levels they’re still climbing to.

You’re first brought into title-track ‘Mirror Image’, a record which leaves little to the imagination within its build up and instead goes all guns blazing straight into its first climatic drop. The cut begins to ramp up with a quick fire speed, featuring a sonic technology that is as intimidating as it is clear cut. It’s a standard Binary hold up for the EP’s remaining three tracks, still going for the throat with every pounding section of drums. ‘Stable’ is slightly more reminiscent of the old-school, with heavy swathes of percussion and a meandering bassline. It presents their neuro-infused touches whilst also opening up a different side of their musical vocabulary. ‘Forced’ comes next, sounding anything but, and giving a softer approach to its sudden explosions of composition. You’re gradually submerged within the aural world of Binary, before every looping drum pattern grabs at you with more and more urgency. Its jiving hook is prevalent throughout, creating club-like atmospherics. Then finally delivered is ‘Transiet’, offering a flipside to their signature and drawing out for a more euphoric set of instrumentals. As a whole, the EP proves the aptitude of Optiv and how he continually strives to find the very best currently within the drum & bass community. Binary are a definite example of that.

Dutch drum & bass producers MissionControl
and Kappie came together last year to present a totally new pseudonym, having both spent time capitalising on their individual skill sets. Their collaborative project Binary sees a fusion of uncompromising, hard hitting production and oozing dancefloor appeal, whilst remaining consistent in their output with an unbridled creativity. Their discovery by fans across the 170bpm spectrum did not go unnoticed by its groundbreaking imprints, with none other than Optiv’s Red Light Records stepping forward to sign their most recent high quality EP. Having already released on the likes of Sample Genie, Raving Panda Records, ION Music, Rustout Records and more, their distinct, forward thinking sound has already paved the way for their forthcoming success. And in being in such high demand, the ‘Mirror Image’ EP is another step towards the unblinking levels they’re still climbing to.
