The Remixes collection is a full-length re-imagination of "A Color Map of the Sun." Derek Vincent Smith – aka Pretty Lights – invited producers from a wide stylistic spectrum to remix the tracks from his latest album. Derek produced "A Color Map of the Sun" with no intention of having it be an album of dance floor bangers, but rather a collection of music that can be enjoyed anyplace, anytime, all the time.

These 'Remixes' are other artists’ interpretations of his compositions and self made vinyl samples. The tracks are mostly intended to be hard hitting, but they are also just very different. See the track list below for all artists involved in the Pretty Lights’ "A Color Map of the Sun Remixes."

Early support from Oliver, Phonat, The Aston Shuffle, Kraak & Smaak, Punks Jump Up, Mighty Mouse, Jacques Renault, Rayko, Djuma Soundsystem, Tensnake and more. 

Blende kicks things off with the EP’s title track, a throbbing neon-disco theme sustained by hammering piano chords. Imagine driving around Miami circa 1986 in a white Lamborghini, Hill Street Blues theme on the car stereo, with Ricardo Tubbs as your chauffeur (and you’ll be pretty close).

Sparkle is an organic arpeggio boogie that recreates the sound of early 2000's New York with a ‘14 attitude.

Plush is most manifestly reminiscent of the 80ies with its synthesized guitars and pianos and its slomo pulse, swamped in a dim soundscape.

In this video, I compose new music as well as remix “Energy Drink” by Virtual Riot. The music is composed by combining 4 different elements with 4 different parameter loops. Basically I choose the rhythm, the modulations, the frequency, and the synth being played, 4 different ways, then combine them together. With drum loops, builds, swells, effects and musical keys, the musical options are endless. 

I also wanted to avoid the “Mash-up trap”, where a controller is used to trigger samples from many different songs. This would have the same problem as Standard DJing, as crate digging and sample processing would take the majority of the practice time, rather than into musical creativity and production.

The project came together as an idea to perform opposite to the industry trend of pre-recorded sets. By allowing myself to compose and perform the music live, the notion of pre-recording an entire set almost seems absurd. As well, many notable EDM acts have been shifting their performance medium to take in more live elements in order to offset the DJ’s who pre-record theirs, e.g. Gaia, Destroid, and Daft Punk. The public backlash that other artists have upon revealing that their sets are pre-recorded has been rather significant, and in the case of Swedish House Mafia, almost career ruining.

John Soulacybin's been humbly raising the bar on sound design dance music with every release.  Since our discovery of Soulacybin's music we've appreciated his laser like focus and attention to detail.  His new album with Gravitas Records entitled "Stazi" is a culmination of years of hard work and pure intent.
