Concerto No. 2 for Piano and Chamber Orchestra (2000) was written for my longtime friend and colleague Mark George, with whom I shared two student years at the Cleveland Institute of Music.  Mark’s performances of my own music, and of many other contemporary composers’ works, have always been inspiring, with a combination of great strength, brilliance, and control.  It was simple, then, for me to imagine the opening of the work, with an extended cadenza of energy and virtuosity.  The rest of the first movement, and the reprise at the end, is based on this initial material, in various guises.  The second movement opens with several minutes of contrasting material, though there are subtle connections with the initial cadenza – connections which become more and more apparent until the cadenza material returns in the finale.

The movement titles were chosen to reflect the completed music, rather than as generating concepts.  Carpe diem (“Seize the Day!”) seemed an apt description for the pianist’s opening music, while Nox Animata (loosely, “Animated, or spirited,  night”) reflected the kind of calm but restless feeling that I was evoking with the music.  At the close, the “animation” wakes things up to full daylight again.
