Fretless Bass

The year so far. Getting into more natural sounds, especially drums, so sick of drum machines. 

These are mainly instrumental but there are some vocal tunes in here too, check out Washroom, Oh Charlene, and Trainwreck Coming for some examples of vocals.

All tracks are available for sync and licensing. I am not currently affiliated with any performing rights group such as ASCAP or BMI. I am open to collaboration with other artists from any genre and look forward to helping others with production.

Psyhadelic

Flash! Ah-ah! Saviour of the... 

Well that's what he did way back when. These days he's more concerned with scheduling date nights with Dale Gordon ne Arden and making sure his back pain meds are in good supply. 

A rare ballad, instrumental for now, maybe I'll add vocals. Sci fi sounds make me think of Flash Gordon and the slow tempo makes me think he's slowing down a little these days and getting introspective.

The tune is piano and bass driven (big surprise huh?). I really like the dynamic piano and I avoided squishing the master so hopefully the dynamics will show through. 

Drums, fretless electric bass, bowed upright bass, synth, piano, rhodes, baritone guitar, some shouts. 

Flash Gordon at 44

Warbly drone, started out as testing a cheap viola. I liked it so I added piano, upright bass, and some FM synth. Viola is a bit out of tune with everything else, I don't understand why they don't just put decent guitar style tuners on those things. Giant wooden pegs are a pain. But it adds to the tension so let's just say it was on purpose and never talk of it again.

Kind of Chariots of Fire meets Bladerunner meets Cosmos  without actually meeting Vangelis along the way. This song makes me think of giant smiling teeth from outer space, 'cause ya know I see them all the time, even with my eyes closed.

Started as another viola exercise, trying to learn intonation and bowing on the beast playing only open strings. Pretty difficult but I like the sound. Added drums, upright bass pizzicato, guitar became the foundation, and piano became the flavor. Some bitter middle aged disillusioned vocals round it out. Punk folk classic rock psychedelia slop. Easy on.

Unhinged

Came back with a better mix, cleared the sfx samples so they are in stereo now, original notes below...

A little jazzy, a little new age orchestral tuning drone, a lot of rock. In 5/4 and 4/4. Some funk flavors hidden in there too. Piccolo bass drives the main theme, piano, guitar, bass, upright, viola, some more piccolo fills and drums take care of the rest. Not sure about this one yet, some things I want to change but it's got an interesting spastic feel that still has a groove. Definitely needs a better mix if nothing else.

Added some vocals, not sure about those either, might go back to being an instrumental. 

This is definitely something to listen to on headphones, lots of little things happening. 

Punchout

Replaced the baritone solo with an acoustic solo by Juan Manuel. Tryin' to class up the joint here. Also did a different mix, not sure I like it better than the first one but it is different.

This is a cover of an obscure 60's tune by the band The Lonely Things, called Our Generation. The original was recorded in 1965 as a demo when the band members were 15 years old, you can hear the only surviving sample of it at the link listed below. Go listen, it's pretty cool to hear quintessential 60's garage folk rock in it's purest form.

Lonely Things
Although they never had an official 45 release, The Lonely Things, from Providence, Rhode Island, recorded an unreleased demo whose top side ended up being compiled on Arf Arf’s New England Teen Scene Unreleased CD.  The song, ‘Our Generation’, was considered too much alike in nature to The Who’s ‘My Generation’ and therefore passed over.

This was a lot of fun to do. Everything was done in single takes and I moved fast. I changed the key so that the baritone guitar could hit the low B and added drums, distorted bass, some psycho flanger on a baritone track, and then the baritone lead lines. And of course the vocals. It's kind of Zappa meets the Ramones, psychedelic meets punk when they both get on the same folk rock bus.

Our Generation (The Lonely Things Cover)

This is a moody introspective sort of sound, a bit jazz, a bit rock, some retro flavors. 

EDIT: Came back and added some "character" vocals and vocoding. And also... put a B bender on my Danelectro baritone and added a track of that, so cool! Twang! Definitely needs smoky sax now, it's kind of desperate for it. 

The song started with a chord progression from my friend and Grammy nominee Juan Manuel (http://www.artistunlimited.com/juanmanuel.htm) and an awesome warbly leslie-like sound from his guitar.  At least I liked it, I don't think Juan has bonded with it yet. 

So he left and then I spent the morning adding all the rest of it, including questionable root substitutions in the bass. I really want Juan to come back and put some down and dirty gospel lead work in the "verses" and we definitely have to have a smoky sax blowing through the rest of it. I think we can make that happen soon, should class it up a bit. 

I played this for Juan and he said "It sounds a lot different than I thought it would", lol. Before he left yesterday I had said I thought I could make it funky, but when I got around to putting the other tracks on I wasn't feeling it, so we got mellow groove.

Guitar, Fretted bass, upright bass, Rhodes, Hammond M3 (Baby B3) organ, a couple piano licks, real drums, and a track of drum machine claps in parts for that overproduced sound.  I damped the drums heavily as an experiment. Enjoy.
