‘The Lake’ was built on unreleased material, in deep slumber for 8 years… until Black Pond revived it.

Beta Evers: I had composed and recorded synths and beats for this song around 2007, long before I knew Jeff. Lyrics and vocals were done. It was actually finished, but for some reason it ended up in my sound archives. 8 years later, when working on Black Pond, Jeff asked to hear some of my unreleased recordings. I sent him that song, but without vocals. I asked him to record vocals, he removed 1 or 2 of my instruments, added a new synth, electric bass guitar, changed the arrangement, wrote lyrics and recorded his vocals. When he sent me the new version, I was thrilled, especially by his vocal performance. 

Jeff Gallea: I loved Beta’s original song seed, it had potential. The feel of it reminded me of drowning by seduction. Beta and I had been exchanging black+white photos of women in dark ceremonies so when I listened to her unreleased song, of course witches came to mind! While adding the new sound elements, I envisioned a coven of water witches gathering at the waters edge… they lure me to the Lake by some unseen power, compelled to kiss one as she hold me underneath, then freeze just below the icing surface of the water, forever lost in the frozen kiss. In this beautiful song I play the tragic role and Beta plays the Queen Water Witch.
