After 8 years this is our last year bringing the Disco Knights camp back to Burning Man. I made this mix with the long drive to Burning Man in mind. Every year the drive up is a very interesting part of the journey for me… I think of it as the emotive start to the burn experience. This year in particular as it’s the last year we’re bringing our disco space ship to the playa. So the anticipation of all the memories of the last 8 years that I know are going to be flying through my mind made me want to play a set that I can rock during the drive through Tahoe hills. Not necessarily a mix of my favorite tracks played at the camp or even a representation of it, but more the feelings I’d like to remember looking back at the last 8 years.

Even though I recorded this mix in my small New Zealand quarantine hotel room, ‘the lagoon’ is a very real place. Last time this year, a small group of friends and I threw a secret bonfire moonrise party at this undisclosed location and I played a set there. This year I can sadly not be there, but I recorded a set with the event in mind. The result is over two and a half hours of eclectic psychedelic sounds. Channel your own inner lagoon the way I did over the past two days putting this set together.

Before she became Black Velveteen,
Chris Offutt was born and raised on the South Side of Chicago. Her parents introduced her to a wide range of music; Motown to Mozart and everything in between. Some frequently featured artists in young Chris’s house were Aretha Franklin, Fleetwood Mac, Stevie Wonder and James Taylor.  Current influences include Chris Fortier, Amonita, Wilma, Nora En Pure, Tayllor, Wilson Kentura, and Matt Sawyer to name a few.

From a very young age she dreamed of hosting her own radio show. In 2011 that dream became  when she had her own show “ Progressions in House” on FNOOB based out of London. 
Chris enjoyed DJing around the San Francisco Bay Area from 2012-2019  . In 2012 she became the resident DJ and musical director at Aloft Hotel SFO. In 2013 Djing in the Pride Parade on the W Hotel float. In 2015 she was asked to perform on the Tantra Stage for Pride in San Francisco.  She was in rotation at The End Up and did guest spots and Monarch, The Great Northern and Wish. In 2016 Chris was asked to join AirPusher Collective.  She has also done guest  mixes for FriskyRadio, ProtonRadio and Elastic Beatz, Innerflight, Space Medicine and more.  Black Velveteen's style and sound is indescribable as she reaches for sounds and music that turn her listeners on to a new experience.

Whether she is spinning for friends and family in her home or on Parade floats and Art Cars in the desert for Burning Man or Night Clubs Black Velveteen never fails to delight and inspire her audience!  In 2018, her Sunrise Set at Sonic Runway on the infamous Airpusher Art Car was recognized as one of the top 9 sets of Burning Man by Billboard Dance.  BV was deeply honored by this mention.  She has also opened for headliners such as Blond:sh, Donald Glaude, Mat.Joe, and Einmusik,  

In 2021 she was asked to join the wildly popular Noise Complaint crew in Seattle and was delighted to do so.  She also holds a residencies with Studio 4/4, Caravan and Airpusher Collective.  In her spare time, she curates dj mixes for Proton Radio on Spotify and Apple Music as well as for Proton Amplified and Proton Featured Artist and her monthly show, Integrated.  She is also the label owner of Sage Rites powered by Proton Radio.  This lady is busy!!  She also produces her own tracks with the help of some very talented friends
