The Hum comes eighteen months after the band's debut album Pearl Mystic - a record that steadily went on to become one of 2013's most impactful breakout statements. Even more ferocious and uncompromising than its predecessor and yet more melodic and focused than the band have ever recorded, The Hum further cements the band’s status as a vital force in British independent music.
Described by the band’s bassist MB as their attempt at “a really minimal two-note rager”, ‘On Leaving’ is six minutes of controlled power, the muscular drumming of new drummer JN gradually clambering up the notches through each repetition of the Leeds’ five-piece’s growling repeato-rock. Refusing to simply rely on a cyclical riff, the track is a testament to the subtle tangents that Hookworms constantly play off each other, keyboardist and producer MJ draping backing call and response melodies across the track, pushing onto more pop plains. 

The album will be available on CD (WEIRD040CD), vinyl (WEIRD040LP) and digitally (WEIRD040D). There is also a limited pressing, deluxe edition of the album (WEIRD040LPX), featuring a die cut sleeve, 180g heavyweight transparent vinyl, a bonus 7” with new tracks and MP3 download .

The patience of a tear reflecting the disco-ball, the pleasure/pain principle of losing a lover, the longing earned on a deserted pier. Patience is an alias of Roxanne Clifford, a songwriter of repute who has fronted groups such as Veronica Falls, The Royal We, Sexy Kids and others. With Patience, Clifford has broken the band-shackles, jettisoned other voices and mainlines a sweetened melodic nous recognisable from her other work, though this time over an impeccable synth pop production. 

From the onset the listener is plunged into dry ice, a sweeping synth and drum opening beamed in from a club in mid-80s Italy. Clifford's voice cuts straight to the heart, a tale of late nights, the dance of guilt and ecstasy. Lyrically, we're rooted at the spot where the church once stood but the Patient heart waits elsewhere, in the dry mists of dreams. B-side My Own Invention is nominally a ballad, a minimal composition that with the sampled vocal harmonies references Laurie Anderson but with a heart-warming melodic line. It's a simple, nursery-rhyme mini-drama that is effortlessly breezy and a wonderfully sweet partner to dancing with tears in your eyes A-side.

It stands to reason that many vital albums come critically close to never being made. The eight-track upshot of doubt, upheaval and financial strain, Stains on Silence by Girls Names is one such release.

Following 2015’s blitzing Arms Around a Vision, and the parting of drummer Gib Cassidy just over a year later, the Belfast band suddenly found themselves facing down a looming void. “There was a finished – and then aborted – mix of the album, which was shelved for six months,” reveals Girls Names frontman Cathal Cully. “We then took a break from all music and went back to full-time work. We chilled out from the stress of rushing the record and not being happy with it, as well as being skint with no impending touring on the cards and constantly having to worry about rent.”

The stumbling blocks that proved a strain became the album’s defining breakthrough. Recorded in various locations including Belfast’s Start Together Studio with Ben McAuley, Cully’s home and the band’s practice space, spontaneous creation, cut-up techniques and self-editing took centre-stage for the first time. "We started tearing the material apart and rebuilding, re-editing and re-recording different parts in my home in early Autumn last year,” says Cully. “When we got them to a place we were happier with we went back into Start Together Studio with Ben McAuley to finalise the mixes to what they are now."

Where AAAV proved a brazen statement of intent, Stains on Silence bounds forth as its feature-length comedown. What could have seen the band buckle became an opportunity for approaching things tabula rasa. During its two-year transmutation, Cully, bassist Claire Miskimmin and guitarist Philip Quinn had a single aim for their fourth album: to make an old-fashioned record clocking in around 30 to 35 minutes in length that made the listener reach straight for repeat. From the Bang Bang bar-summoning swoon of opener '25’ and the submerged disco doom of ‘Haus Proud’ to the rapt, dub-leaning ‘Fragments of a Portrait’, Girls Names have excelled in their goal by forging an LP of synchronous nuance and defiance.

Marked by the presence of drum machines and programming throughout, these eight masterfully-woven tales are once again commandeered by founder Cully, whose words, understated yet defiant, mine purpose and meaning from the mire ("I want to bathe again, I want to swim again / In a pool of twisting bodies, blackened gold." — ‘25’). But while Stains on Silence came critically close to never being made, having lived with it, reconfigured it, and guided its metamorphosis from flickers of inspiration and half-formed schemes, it’s both a statement of pure perseverance, and a head-on confrontation with ambivalence that couldn’t be more assured. If you ever wondered what’d happen if two best friends who share a collective mission to not take life too seriously spent just as much time soaking up the muddy blues of Mississippi as they did the kosmisch experimentations of West Germany (the pair also play in Krautrock collective Datashock) then Pretty Lightning are your answer. Unsurprising, then, that as often as their sound is indeed full to the brim with crunch, swagger and feedback, they’re also just capable as easing off on that oft-abused accelerator and dealing in something more far hypnotic and drone-like.

The reverberating slow-burner, ‘Greyhound’, is exactly one such moment. Just like the video that comes with it, it’s the sonic equivalent of hitching a long motorcycle road you never want to end–only, as in said visuals, the landscape you’re cruising through happens to be somewhere weird, cartoonish and, true to form, psychedelic-as-hell. The band says of the single: “Greyhound is pure escapism - one fantasy of it, anyway. It’s probably our most pop-pleasing song so far too, even if that’s not the direction we’re generally heading into. If you think that sometimes it´s ok to treat yourself to a fantasy, why not take the imagination of an eternal ride and stick it in a 4 minute ‘pop-song’”
