Four quintessential examples of editing finesse as newcomer Wonkar explores his extensive soul and boogie collection. With full emphasis squared on the slinky basslines, slower tempos and languishing grooves, each cut is a shimmering highlight in itself. He's also done shown some sensitivity to the art of digging without going too obscure. Notable moments include the stuttering '80s drum-heavy repurpose of Xena's "On The Upside" and the chubbed up low-end of Starpoint's "Last Night". Cultures of Soul Records is proud to present Greg Belson's Divine Disco - American Gospel Disco 1974 to 1984, curated and researched by Gospel Soul music authoritarian Greg Belson. Greg Belson's Divine Disco is a snapshot in time encapsulating the raw power of a spiritual performance, set to the pulsating 4/4 rhythms that were in vogue with the dance floors of the day.

Labels like Savoy played a key part in identifying artists that fit nicely into this brand new style with performers like Shirley Finney and The Gospelaires, both of whom were established within the scene, but carried the ‘Disco’ torch brightly with their tunes featured here. Divine Disco also paints a picture of the lesser known acts that privately released their message to the hopeful masses, such as the Gospel Ambassadors and the Inspirational Souls, whose recording budgets would have been signifi-cantly less than any ‘major’ label. As proven here, they had no less of an impact to the listener.

Other tracks on this compilation such as Betty Griffin's "Free Spirit" have become big club spins for the likes of the NYC Downlow and Horse Meat Disco crews. Also included are recently discovered tunes like the Masters of Music's "Trouble Don't Last Always" as well as a future classic by The Testi-monial Singers, which features several young members of the Winans Family. We’ve got you covered too for those more modern soul, boogiefied moments with rarities from Delores Fuller, Herman Harris and two offerings from the killer LP by Enlightment. Basement Jaxx songstress Sharlene Hector uplifts on a sparkling new version of Side Effect’s Always There. Transatlantic duo Sons of the Sun make their BBE debut with warm and soulful hip hop single ‘Underwater Dreaming,’ taken from their forthcoming self-titled album.

A tender, sensual celebration of connection and desire, ‘Underwater Dreaming’ evokes the sounds of contemporary R&B, fused with Southeast London’s signature jazz vibes. Their unique aesthetic stands out- the entire album is recorded with honest, organic musicianship, an homage to the much loved old skool sample sound, reflected back through multi-instrumentation. Sons of the Sun is a collaboration between American singer-songwriter JTronius and British producer Maverick Quest, featuring an inspired selection of luminary guests and musicians. Delivered remotely following a chance meeting on music-tech networking app ‘Brapp’, the ingenious pair sent files back and forth between Texas andSouth East London to create their shared vision for the project. Remarkably, the duo have yet to meet in person.

A respected solo artist knighted by Bootsy Collins as an official ‘funkateer,’ Berklee College graduate JTronius is an extravagant entertainer, songwriter and entrepreneur. Self-dubbed The Guvna of the Galaxy, he brings his swaggy, soulful style to all his endeavours. He has shared stages with LL Cool J, The Roots, Talib Kweli, Pharrell, Busta Rhymes and Damian Marley and is an accomplished actor, appearing in a number of successful Hollywood feature films.

Genre-blending record producer and multi-instrumentalist Maverick Quest is a coveted artist with 20 years of experience in the music industry. He grew up immersed in the aesthetic of hip hop, but in an environment where flipping loops from vinyl was standard, developing his musicianship to create his own sounds was radical, a move that paved the way for his signature sonic. Maverick Quest has previously performed with and produced for Guru, Grandmaster Flash, Ice T, Ibibio Sound Machine, Solo Rosa and Portico Quartet to name but a few and is firmly rooted in the epicentre of the burgeoning South East London jazz movement.

Mixed by Grammy-nominated Clinton “Ubiquity” McCreery and mastered at Grammy-awarded studio The Carvery, ‘Underwater Dreaming’ features celebrated musicians such as Scottish Group ‘The Brass Cats’, Washington DC’s Reginald Payne (aka Bass Negus), with Philly neo-soul stalwart and Lauryn Hill, Bilal collaborator Dai Miyazaki. Accompanied by an official video by Nathalie Gordon, the debut single ‘Underwater Dreaming’ from Sons of the Sun offers an enticing first taste of what’s to come from this exciting new musical partnership.

A veteran jazz funker, I have been listening and collecting soul, dance and jazz for the past 35 years and is a very important part of my life. Inspired by listening to some of the great grooves, mixes and re-edits that are currently out there I figured I should do something with all the music I have amassed and which I love and adore. I have never DJ'd and what I know about music I could write on the back of a cigarette packet ( I know, I know, it shows!), but thought I'd give this a go. I'm into all genres of soul, dance and nu jazz and like to dust off a little gem which never quite made it out there and give it a fresh vibe.

I started remixing in August 2011 just fooling around on Garageband with just my intuition and a little help from Youtube to get me started. I am now working on Logic 9 and am trying to produce some of my own tracks as well as remixing.Not having a musical bone in my body can be a little frustrating at times so if there are any budding, or indeed accomplished, musicians, vocalists, 12 piece horn sections (!) who have a soulful or jazzy vibe that would like to do some collaboration work then I’d love to hear from you….as I would any mastering guru’s – Jeeesh, what son of a bit*h invented that!! :))

I am truly amazed I actually have a following here on SC and that people are actually listening and downloading my stuff. To you, I would like to say a BIG thank you for all your kindness and words of encouragement, and to those DJ’s on Solar, Starpoint, SoulLegends, JFS, Soulmine, Soulpower,Stomp JazzFM, Back2Back and everyone else that has been brave enough to actually  air some of this stuff – it means a lot!
