Blech 20.2

In the early 1990s, Warp became associated with the UK's northern bleep techno scene, including acts such as LFO, Sweet Exorcist, Forgemasters and Nightmares on Wax. The 1992 label compilation Artificial Intelligence helped establish the electronic subgenre known as intelligent dance music (IDM). Subsequently, Warp became the home of influential acts such as Aphex Twin, Autechre, Squarepusher, and Boards of Canada.

British electronic label Warp was founded by Steve Beckett, Rob Mitchell  (RIP 2001), and Robert Gordon, Warp (originally to be named Warped, but shortened for communication ease, and later expanded by the backronym "We Are Reasonable People"), is one of the world's most respected, influential, and loved electronic/experimental dance labels of all times. After many years in Sheffield, UK, they later moved to and are based in London, UK.

Bleep.com, Warp's digital music sales site, was also pioneering in being amongst the first to provide high-quality variable bit rate MP3s for sale (later FLAC and other lossless formats). 

To commemorate the 35 years anniversary of the label, I made this mix of some of their lesser known classics, remixes and their influences. I am aware this ain't easy to listen, some of these tracks, like Pathfinder are quite experimental but it's Warp! 3 h 29 minutes mix and 45 tracks.

Since the release of his last Com Truise LP (2017’s Iteration, also out on Ghostly International) Seth Haley has switched things up. Jaded by his sonic palette and working methods, Haley changed out his equipment and constructed a new set of core sounds to work with. The result is Persuasion System, a record that builds on Haley’s previous successes while still remaining identifiable as a Com Truise collection.

Here we see a wide selection of indebted influences to this LP crossing electronic genres from ambient and electro into drum and bass territories.

WARPED : 30 years of Warp records (1989-2020) 

An incredibly adventurous label that reaches a massive, loyal audience. It's the label that signs the most interesting talent. The home of Aphex Twin, Autechre, and BoC. Its story began in Sheffield in 1989 during the UK's acid house explosion. The bleep sound Warp helped shape and popularise was probably the UK's first truly innovative response to US house and techno, a sound to call its own. Through the Artificial Intelligence series, the label laid the groundwork for experimental electronic music as we know it today—music that didn't rely on a club environment to come alive—and went on to explore new sonic possibilities through IDM and fusions of guitars and dance music. The creation of, or response to, many major movements of electronic music's past three decades can be found in its vast catalogue.
