Essential Mix 22.11.14

I've been listening to Essential mixes since I first started getting into clubs and electronic music, so it was a shock, and exciting for me, to get the offer to make one myself. The two hour format really allows some time to explore ideas musically as well.

So bringing everything together, I decided to try and make it an exploration of everything that has made me so obsessed with electronic music for the last 20 years, with some of my favourite records from the mid 90's, unreleased material from my favourite artists like Nils Frahm, Lusine, Tim Hecker and Rob Clouth, and a range of genres from ambient to 90 bpm electronica, house and techno, all the way up to 170bpm glitched jungle mayhem - I thought, why not have some fun with it!?

So it's certainly not a normal club mix, it's just what I think is the best music out there, without worrying about what genre or box any particular track fits into or how things should be done "properly". I wanted to leave some sections quite ambient as well, to give breathing space between the peaks, so I'm happy to be able to post this new version up, minus the broadcast talking and idents.

We keep it local with our next podcast, a long time Dekmantel friend. Yuri Boselie is an occasional producer of deep and moody sounds but is foremost a DJ extra-ordinaire. He was a resident at the sorely missed Trouw and is the sort of DJ who defies categorisation. From major festivals to Boiler Room gigs, intimate basements to open air sessions, he knows exactly what to draw for and when to draw for it. House, garage, techno and plenty in between are all fair game for the man who has also collaborated with Tom Trago, and who is responsible for the Beat Dimension compilations that kickstarted the growth of the beats scene in Europe. 

The podcast he puts together is 70 minutes of smooth, feel house and playful grooves. There are trips into acid, tracks from yesterday year and pure party vibes all neatly melted together into the sort of bouncy session that is deceptively effortless.

Palms Trax Boiler Room x Dekmantel Festival DJ Set

As you will already know, we really appreciate proper selectors here at Dekmantel. The next man to step up to our series is a prime example of that: Brooklyn based DJ and visual artist GE-OLOGY has been writing musical stories with real beginnings, middles and ends since he first started collecting wax aged five. After a career in hop hop working with royalty like Jill Scott and Mos Def, a slightly new direction has seen him put out a select few house productions on revered labels like Sound Signature, whilst the records he plays reflect his genuine musical and instrumental playing skills. 

Proof of that comes across the two diverse hours he digs deep to serve up for us here. From boogie to disco, jazz funk to smooth soul, this is the sort of golden and heart warming selection that has people demanding IDs and scouring Discogs immediately. Right up there with our friends like Sadar Bahar and MCDE, this is a joyous soundtrack filled with moments you will not forget.
