Next up our Origins Tapes series is musician, producer, DJ and label owner Priori who is best known for their beautiful cross-over tracks and mixes and their label NAFF that they run with fellow artist Ex-Terrestial. 

Based and born Quebec and currently based in Montréal , Priori represents the Canadian dance music scene worldwide through both their individual output and their label’s. They have also become known for their technical ability in the studio which has led to them mixing projects for fellow artists such as Rosa Terence, Ex-terrestrial and Gene Tellem.

Priori’s hypnotic soundscapes have meant that they have the ability to create worlds around their audience with both their live shows, live DJ sets and online mixes and we are excited to be welcoming them for our Origins Tapes series.

Introduce yourself? Pronouns? Where do you currently reside? 1 fun fact about yourself?

Hi! My name is Declan (he/him), currently residing in Melbourne/Naarm. I’m trying to learn Hungarian at the moment so I can apply for dual citizenship.


How did you get your DJ name? 

I was at a festival a few years ago and while sitting around the campsite talking shit a few friends started coming up with nicknames for me. They eventually went from Declan > Lecdan > Doiflan > Loifdan. Drop the dan and ‘LOIF’ was born.

Any advice to upcoming producers/djs?

I think probably the hardest part of getting into either practice is the steep learning curve (especially with producing). What I found most helpful was learning from other people. When I first started playing around with mixing and buying records I was lucky that a large chunk of my mates were all getting into it at the same time. I spent sooooo many days just endlessly mixing with friends and we would constantly share music and ideas and concepts, many of which still inform my style today. I doubt I would’ve stuck with it if it wasn’t for such a passionate and supportive group of people I was lucky to learn with. Similar can be said about producing - I have found collaboration to be endlessly helpful. Every single time I’ve worked with other producers/musicians/mixing engineers etc. I’ve picked up at least one or two techniques or ideas that have been essential in the way I make music going forward. Everyone has a different way of doing things and you can only benefit from getting a wide range of perspectives on how people practice their craft.

Also, don’t be too concerned about buying super fancy top-of-the-line gear - if anything learning on a less than ideal set up can be beneficial going forward. I would probably be a much worse DJ if I hadn’t started mixing records on cheap audio-technica turntables. By the same token, having a limited set up when producing (ie. a shitty laptop, 2 VSTs and a handful of samples) is limiting but allows you to learn the basics without being overwhelmed and will make the transition to more complicated gear and techniques much smoother in the future.

What would you like to see in the future for the dance community?

There’s a lot that would be good to see but I think more emphasis on safer spaces for dancers, performers and artists are incredibly important. Unfortunately in Naarm unwanted attention, sexual abuse and sometimes violence is a regular occurence in a lot of clubs where promoters and venue owners don’t put the necessary work into making sure this type of behaviour is stamped out. When these safe spaces are created it’s an incredibly powerful feeling knowing you are safe to express yourself and that everyone shares the same level of respect for one another. A new club that just opened in the CBD called Miscellania has done an amazing job in fostering this kind of environment, partly due to the fact that they trained friends to work on the door as security and ensure the right kind of people were coming in. Too bad it was only open for two weeks before we went back into lockdown :’(

Arsenii released an incredible record with us a few months back called the "Deep Hows EP" and this mix is evocative of the sound he explored on that essential 12". The 2022 Edition was a special one for me, full of mixed feelings and not really in my best mental state. As soon as I was up there and got in the groove I looked up and saw all the smiles and for a moment I forgot all the bad stuff and went for the ride.
So this is my little gift to you all.

Immense thanks for all your kind words received during the festival. Before and after my set. I live for moments like this and to celebrate music in such environments with the best crowds possible.
Small, simple, good music, good people. Thats all I need.

Also thanks for continually supporting Parallel Festival. I have big plans for the future which I hope to make possible.

Khotin has been a key figure in the developing Electronic music scene emerging from Canada - for over ten years he has been producing and releasing music.

His sound has evolved exponentially, weaving between sounds and styles with cohesive ease of which others might only dream of. His records have found a home somewhere between the heady 90's ambient and trip hop era, deep house and has drawn upon abstract influences from balearic roots, trance and a whirlwind of other other cultural guises.

All of this makes his music remarkably interesting and hard to pin down.

His forthcoming album "Release Spirit" is forthcoming on acclaimed label Ghostly International. It features a collection of ambient soundscapes, tape recordings and off piste samples as Khotin draws inspiration from far reaching influences such as World of Warcraft, train journeys through Europe and Japan, family vacations and beyond.

We asked Khotin to record a mix which reflects a similar nature of the new album - the result is a delicate assortment of textures which lend themselves to a brooding optimism for the year ahead. At least we hope..

For valentine´s special we have invited the super talented Ciel to join us for our next mix in her own words: 
In honour of Valentine's Day, I decided to make a mix that's all about love. Love that's flirty and sweet, sometimes shy and sometimes passionate, sometimes tumultuous and sometimes ecstatic, sometimes innocent and sometimes sensuous, love that's fun, joyful, and open-hearted. Of course everyone has their own definition of love music, and what they tend to associate with love is usually dependent on the style of music they share with their past and present partners, and so is very personal. For me I tend to think nothing is more romantic than soul, r&b, and jazz. But since this is a dance mix, I selected music for the dancefloor that I consider the descendants of these styles---house, hardcore, and UKG. And just so I can be extra cheesy, every song talks about love explicitly. This is my first year since I started touring that I'm actually home for Valentine's Day, so I plan on enjoying it with my two loves—my bf & our cat. :)
