Translated as ‘never never’ this convergent compilation depicts the facelessness and disarray within inner city life. Sludge, broken glass, rats and alleyways – sonic images flashing through the mind – traffic lights, raindrops, concrete and endless nights. Do you still follow? Are you being followed? Klara Lewis returns to Editions Mego with a surprising live set recorded in 2018. Expanding her exploratory vision into haunted realms of unheimlich sound, Live in Montreal consists of a single piece with three distinct discernible sections. 

The set opens with a crude rhythm churning away under a choral loop from which a diverse array of rhythm and noise appear and disappear. Despite it's foreboding tone this sequence still retains a foot in the club, as damaged as that may be.

A state of permanent collapse is a thread throughout. In this opening sequence an array of strange sonic elements introduce themselves, rise to the fore, threaten the fundamental discourse only to recede on the brink of destroying the work itself.  

It’s this fascinating construct, this perpetual threat to the music itself that makes the listening experience so captivating. Midway the storm subsides laying bare a more static emotional framework rendered unrecognisable prior. Electronic phantoms swirl in a more gentle fashion as ghostly voices come to the fold looping into an uneasy landscape shifting into a blurry utopian finale. 

Finding itself between decay and hope, Live in Montreal 2018 is another stunning addition to the consistently solid output from Klara Lewis.

Under his pen name Chlär, Charles Accarisi sets forth with a full rig manifestation of techno that jolts from one trunk-rattler to the next. From his native Switzerland to his adoptive home Berlin, the potency of his sound has followed him and grown ever larger, an assertive strain of dyed-in-the-wool techno that’s groovy and layered as a mountain rock. Working over and above his standard DJ duties, across A&R, events and sound engineering, Chlär practices full-involvement in much of the music pipeline, starting with his own sound and that of new finds and ending with the music’s final dialogue in public space. He’s been keeping busy, and as half of Funk Assault, co-runner of Bipolar Disorder Rec and founder of Primal Instinct his plate’s more than full, but his just-released first full album on the latter label shows little signs he’s tiring. The Architects of Shadows explores current political and sociological themes as broad as nationalism and social atomisation, rifts that through his many roles in music, he’s working hard to bridge. The promise of that newly connected world comes alive through the primacy of his beats, looping, packed with meaning but immediate nonetheless. Bassiani Podcast 248 is an hour and a half of dizzying basslines and all encompassing loops that bear witness to Chlär’s undeniable skill as techno selector. These are future-ready beats from a techno polymath.
