Hello friends,

Before I met The Josh Craig I read about him in my local newspaper, a phrase you don’t find too often anymore. 

It wasn’t until several months later, preparing for a release party that would never be, that I met The Man Himself. I’d shown up to Magick City a few days before the party to say hello, and was surprised to find my friend Jakub sitting with TJC on the dance floor. 

Though I hadn’t yet recognized him from the paper, something seemed familiar about Josh. I immediately found him a very comfortable person to be around. All going in the same direction, he Jakub and I left together back towards the center of the neighborhood. 

I sometimes reflect on this particular Wednesday evening,  gliding back up Greenpoint Avenue with like minded people, running into several more friends, feeling at home in my city the way I imagine it was meant to feel: the shopkeepers recognizing me on my way home aren’t shopkeepers at all, they’re DJs, which is funny but no less warm. We stopped in at McDonalds and got McFlurrys. Later on, while booking the summer mixes, I was keen to get The Josh Craig involved. 

Josh’s contribution to the series is a snapshot of an artist in process. My first few times through the mix, I thought I recognized Josh’s voice on a few tracks, only to discover that more than half of the selections are his own outsider deep house, the fruits of a producer comfortable in the emotive, liminal-subspace that is the crux of the genre.

Every time I've listened Josh has pulled me in deeper.

Native to New York, musclecars is a DJ / Producer duo consisting of Brandon Weems and Craig Handfield. As musicians, they equally share an admiration for the artform. Their desire to blend genres and express their appreciation for music is focused around their community- the end goal is to bring people together. Through a regular stream of high quality mixes, they have begun to turn heads in underground circles.

In 2018 they launched ‘Coloring Lessons’, a party that was aimed to add value to their city’s nightlife culture. While the party and sound is not genre specific, it is heavily focused around house, disco, jazz, and soul, embracing the musical elements of their black and brown ancestors. The monthly party's intention is to bring New York City's dance music scene back to what it was during the golden era of NY nightlife. They aim to spread the music that has been influential to them, and share it with a younger generation of their peers.

Next up on our monthly Carhartt WIP RELEVANT PARTIES podcast series is Munich-based label Public Possession. In our fifth episode, the label’s founders Valentino Betz and Marvin Schuhmann talk about their uncompromising and uncommon vision for Public Possession, which was founded in 2013 with the intention of it being more than just a musical outlet. The result has seen the label produce art, clothes and events, acting as something of a cultural hub for the Bavarian city.

At its core, however, is Public Possession’s musical releases, which have included the likes of Bell Towers; Australian producer Andras; Austria’s king of glam club pop Wolfram; up-and-coming New Zealanders Eden Burns and Nice Girl; and multidisciplinary Taiwanese artist Yutie Lee.
