Seven years down the line and Tamed Musiq is proud to present its first-ever album release: "Upstream Colour“ by Iron Curtis. This long overdue follow-up to "Soft Wide Waist Band“ represents a milestone for the Berlin-based producer and easily ranks as his most accomplished work to date. Similar to an impressionist painter, Iron Curtis portrays a well-known subject (House Music) in a dream-like setting by employing a palette of ethereal sounds, subdued melodies and bass-heavy beats. “Upstream Colour” is a beautiful musical experience that never strays too far from the dancefloor yet requires multiple listens in order to unlock all of its mysteries.

Johannes Paluka has enjoyed a prolific career since he has started using the Iron Curtis moniker back in 2009. His releases on Mirau, Hudd Traxx, Retreat or Uncanny Valley have been highly praised and have certainly contributed to the resurgence of deep house in the last decade. His music as part of prolific duos Achterbahn d'Amour with Jürgen Albert, Moon with Johannes Albert and Smpl with Leaves has also been widely celebrated. But as Johannes was going through a difficult period in his life at the beginning of 2016, the events in turn sparked a flurry of inspiration which resulted in the core of "Upstream Colour“. The producer has then spent the last two years working on different projects while continuously fine-tuning his second album and making it his most personal creation up to now.

"Upstream Colour“ is a stunning journey in twelve parts where ambient pieces effortlessly slide into club-ready tracks, thanks to a very distinct range of sounds. There's an unmistakable dream-like quality to the music as subtle tones, elusive melodies and background noises give the impression of looking at familiar elements through a veil. "Boorang“, "Werc Werc Werc“ or “Holding Back” can definitely light up the dancefloor but they also evoke a certain distance from it and are keen to drift into an otherworldly realm, somewhat reminiscent of the cinema of David Lynch.

But even at it's most peculiar, there's an undeniable warmth that radiates from "Upstream Colour" which is best illustrated in its calmer moments such as "Ease Pt. 1 and 2“, "Bethanien“ or the closer "Mt. Gordon“ where ripples of white noise seem to wash away the 'classic' house sounds of yesterday. And then there are the cathartic pieces such as the title track or the gorgeous “Lucent”: beginning in the now familiar fog-like signature, these tracks brilliantly evolve to let in beams of emotion tingled with melancholy. “Lucent” in particular is prone to illuminate even the darkest dancefloor with its majestic strings and heartwarming synths.

“Upstream Colour” is a mesmerizing album that follows the listener long after it has reached its end, akin to a dream that lingers on well beyond the moment of waking up. It is also a testimony to Iron Curtis' boundless talent as a musician whose abilities extend far beyond the genre of House Music.

Ari Bald, who made a name for himself putting out sample-based disco cuts, had announced a while back that he'd be focusing more on the analog side of music production in his coming releases. The first evidence of that was on the debut VA from Haŵs entitled Haŵs Party Vol. 1. Now he's following it up with a full EP of analog-style deep house for the same label. The four track EP is called Pesce after the opening track and it is packed with 80's style drum machines, lush pads, italo-style arpeggios and more.

Our premiere today is the closing track, Umberto Arpeggio, and it definitely focuses on the latter both in name and execution. A functional italo-style track, it's built around the bubbly bass-line and bright synth lead. Moody deep pads come into the fold for some nice contrast while the development is carried in part by the drum machine work and the filter cutoff on the synths which creates the slow building tension. The rest of the EP is well rounded with the breakbeat and electro-inspired Sunday Wool, 80's influenced Pesce, and the hybrid jam, Club Contradictory. Overall, it's a good release to have in your collection that you can pull out on a number of occasions.Be sure to support the label directly via their Bandcamp as the release is out next week!

PREMIERE: Ari Bald - Umberto Arpeggio

The Berlin-based Suol are now on their third summer compilation. Here's the contribution from the prolific Tuff City Kids - another fine production to add to their catalogue. Suitably summery but not kitsch!

The compilation is part of their Hallo Montag series that runs alongside their Monday party at IPSE Berlin, with a new track from the compilation released each week.

Claptrap’s first release of 2020 comes from Longhair, a Berlin based project formed of two Renate residents Marko Pelaic (Homeboy) & Bene Bogenberger (1/2 of Peak & Swift). The release follows on from their 12" on Renate Schallplatten last year, alongside a previous EP for Bordello A Parigi and remixes for PBR Streetgang’s new imprint.

The Heatwave EP features 3 floor-ready original tracks plus a remix of the title track by Johannes Albert (Frank Music, Fine).
The final cut ‘Pizzamouse' a more relaxed slice of melodic house sees the release out in style with dancing rubbery synth lines which is sure to get those feet moving.

Blossom kollektiv is proud to present a fresh new release to continue showcasing the eclectic new direction of the imprint's musical identity. This time inviting Germany-born, Austria-based DJ and producer Conntex, for a proper techno EP titled “Sonic Seduction”. The four-track voyage takes the listener on a journey through many distinct but solid representations of the techno sound.

 

To get things started the release kicks off with “Serenity” a deep and dubby techno wonderland with pulsating beats, moving percussion and classic dub stabs that weave together seamlessly to create a firm foundation for the rest of the release. Transitioning into the next piece “Feeling of sublime” we are transported directly to the front of the dance floor with this straight techno groover. A punchy kick paired with otherworldly synths and funky percussion keeps the energy up, which is bound to keep the listener moving as if in a psychedelic trance within a strange new place.

 

Moving along to “Liminal” another deep techno-utopia catches our ears with a pumping kick drum that is paired with precisely placed percussion that keeps the groove moving with brute force. This paired with the occasional and clever use of minimalistic vocals is perfectly placed within the arrangement that keeps things shifting until the true surprise of the track comes at the breakdown. The brilliant use of the beeping of a heart monitor within the composition effortlessly bridges the gap between breakdown and the final arrangement of the track.

 

Wrapping up the release with the title track “Sonic Seduction”, Conttex delivers one more fresh flavor of techno. A sinister bassline paired with seductive and well-placed vox sets the mood for the track until the kick and tribal percussion comes into play establishing a strong infrastructure. The groove continues to build until the surprise dubby synths come to play at the end of the arrangement tying everything together cohesively and returning to the vibe created from the very beginning of the release.

 

To complete the package the EP comes paired with four stellar remixes to take the listener even further into the abyss of sonic auditory delights with remixes by Rydim, ALPI, D_Roots, and Egotot. Each remix presents an eclectic flavor of electronic soundscapes that perfectly round out the release, from deep techno and broken beat to slow experimental shamanic drum sequences that propel the release into an exciting new direction while keeping the spirit of the original EP.
