Science Lab challenge Feb 2015

After a remix for Dadub on Stroboscopic’s Preternity release, Rrose checks in with a full solo release through Monad XVI. This is a record half machine, half beast, at times empathetic but continuously emphatic.
Opener ‘Onceless’ is a nine-minute coalescence of the aural narrative of Apocalypse Now. Running throughout is an incessant buzzing, more helicopter and plane than the label’s favourite bees. From this mechanical source emerges an eerie tribal drumming, slowly bringing the dissonance to a chilling conclusion.
‘The Stare’ begins as optimistically as ‘Onceless’ seemed pessimistic: a beautiful bass drum induces a whirring repeat. This repeat, however, begins to suffocate, absorbing the drum in a slide towards more mechanical disorientation. Paranoid hi-hat and insistent low ends are then introduced to close.
‘Kneeling’ is an amalgam of hi-end loops, the master sampler for a 1980s ‘computer sound’ film stock. The tone is brought back from the electronic precipice by a more verdant perspective in the middle minutes, but this cannot prevent the electronic whirring from passing into final track ‘Wet Silk Will’.
‘WSW’ has a greater jut than its predecessors, breathing and striding in a human form. Yet while it pursues this more human resolve, it certainly retains the EP’s signature pursuit of determined, electronic force.

When I came to London last year to join fabric and head the A&R for the artist led label Houndstooth I got dragged down to Hackney Wick for what was going to be a life changing techno event of the rawest level. This happening is what has inspired my series of Warehouse Sessions, where I have reached out to my favourite techno artists and asked them to get inspired by that unique thump thump betwixt concrete sounds that industrialised techno spaces always provoke and provide a suitably banging mix for my Electronic Explorations podcast series.
This week I've kicked off another round of mixes lead by Our Circula Sound man Sigha, London resident Ø [Phase], Semantica Records boss and Spanish producer Svreca, Italian producer and co-owner of Repitch Records Shapednoise (One half of Violetshaped) and finally a US producer who has released on Sandwell District & Stroboscopic Artefacts, Rrose.
December 2012 brought mixes by USA producer Skirt, UK producer Truss aka MPIA3, Stormfield & myself, Irish and Greek producers AnD and French producer Kangding Ray (his being voted EE mix from all shows in 2012)

Rules
The competition is open to anyone with an Elektron machine with sample capabilities (i.e. Octatrack, Machinedrum UW, Analog Rytm)
Each contestant may submit one track only
The track length must be between one and three minutes
The entire track must be created with one physical machine and only using the sample (i.e. no synthesis allowed)
The original sample must be uploaded to your machine without modification
No re-sampling allowed
No post-production or editing of the track is allowed
There will be one winner and two runners-up selected by a jury consisting of Elektron employees
The decision of the jury is final
All submitted tracks will be uploaded and available for public listening on the Elektronauts SoundCloud account
Gentle compression and limiting may be applied by Elektron to each track before uploading to SoundCloud, in order to get a balanced volume level between all entries
The sysex files of the overall winner and the two runners-up will be shared with the Elektronauts community
Failure to provide a valid sysex file upon request will result in disqualification

Challenge is to create a track from the spoken phrase 'We're not talking about a simple looping device'.
No drum machines, synths or other instrumentation whatsoever, just that phrase.
Played live on the Octatrack & recorded directly from its outputs in one take. No post, Mastering, Editing or Normalising.
