Ministry of Sound Group is a multimedia entertainment business based in London with a nightclub, shared workspace and private members club, worldwide events operation, music publishing business and fitness studio.

James Palumbo is the co-founder and former Chairman and CEO of the Group. He handed over the day-to-day running of the business to Lohan Presencer in 2008. In 2018, Presencer became chairman.
Ministry of Sound began as the idea of Justin Berkmann. Inspired by New York’s Paradise Garage - which he described as "an amazing club. It had lights, darkness, music, quiet – everything you wanted" - Berkmann set out to create London's first club devoted to the American house music scenes of 1980s New York City, Newark (which centred around Club Zanzibar), Chicago and Detroit. As opposed to striking a balance between the typical hallmarks of a live music venue, Ministry of Sound was conceived as an arena purely dedicated to sound. Berkmann stated: "My concept for Ministry was purely this: 100% sound system first, lights second, design third (in that order); the reverse of everyone else’s idea." According to him, they spent £500,000 on the club's sound system, and the same amount again on soundproofing the club using magnesite: they wanted to be able to turn the sound system up as loud as possible without disturbing the neighbours, and tested it to a volume of 156 decibels without the sound leaking outside. In addition to drawing inspiration from the Paradise Garage, the club borrowed the idea of using changing set designs from another New York City club, Area, with the first being based around Blade Runner, Berkmann's favourite film.

Berkmann was introduced to James Palumbo, who was working in property finance at the time, by Humphrey Waterhouse to realise the concept. The site, a disused bus garage, is located in Elephant & Castle in Southwark, London. The club opened on 21 September 1991 and has remained in this location since. Having considered "a load of daft names" for the club, including Get Off My Foot and The Ghost and Mrs Chicken, Berkmann came up with Ministry of Sound after walking past the Ministry of Defence Main Building.

With opening sets from American house and garage DJ's Larry Levan, David Morales, Roger Sanchez and Tony Humphries, as well as Paul Oakenfold, Ministry of Sound grew as a clubbing venue. According to Berkmann, it managed to empty rival nightclub Tramp for its first six months by drawing its celebrity clientele, before "they stopped coming and it was more about the dance music community". It now attracts around 300,000 clubbers per year[1] and has hosted sets from popular DJ's including: Adam Beyer, DJ Harvey, Dixon, Marshmello, Jozeff and Pete Tong. It has won the IDMA ‘World’s Best Sound System’ award four years in a row - every year they ran the category.

The capacity of The Box (the main room) is 600 people, and there are other smaller rooms within the club. There are three weekly club nights: Fridays feature Lock n Load brand The Gallery which are primarily trance music, whilst Saturdays host a number of club nights which are primarily house music. In 2016, these included Defected, Glitterbox, Rinse FM, Hospitality and Together. On Tuesday the club hosts a student session called Milkshake, established in 2002.

First playing out in a burgeoning St. Albans scene almost decade ago, the duo have since focused on their production, developing their sound over the years and we are pleased to welcome them onto the label in 2017.
 
Entitled the ‘Ascertain EP’, their debut features collaborations with the likes of Survey & MC Fokus and has already been garnering support from the likes of Break, Ant TC1 & Kyrist.

10 years ago two of the worlds most prominent DJs were preparing for the Delta Heavy US arena tour, the likes of which this country had never seen before. Coming off the back of a successful residency at New York's super club Twilo, Sasha and Digweed were in prime position to take underground EDM to the US mass market and beyond. Fast forward to 2012 and some commentators see this era as a watershed moment in the US, showcasing this type of music to cities that had never experienced it before. 

This mix, broken up into two halves, takes you back to a time before Giuliani's "quality of life" campaign had taken the heart out of New York's club culture, only recently to be returned by today's current crop of energetic promotors. Mixed live, this mix hopefully takes you back and relives some happy memories……I know I had a lot of fun putting it together…..enjoy!

This is a live recording of my support set for Leftfield on their "Leftism 22" tour at the Manchester o2 Apollo. It was the second show of the weekend and the set I felt I really got to grips with, so I was happy that it also worked when I played it back. It's not a peak time set by any means, and its one of the rare times I got the chance to play a load of my favourite electronic records together in a huge venue for a really receptive crowd. So if you were there, thanks for listening and I hope I opened that very special night up in a respectable fashion! The Essential Mix is a weekly radio show on BBC Radio 1 currently broadcast between 0:00 - 2:00 AM UK time on Saturday morning. Originally broadcast on 30 October 1993, the Essential Mix features contemporary DJs and music producers of electronic dance music. The show has been presented since its inception by Pete Tong and features an uninterrupted two-hour mix from a different artist each week, overlaid with occasional continuity announcements delivered by Tong. With a broadcast run in excess of 25 years, the Essential Mix is one of the longest-running programmes in the current BBC Radio 1 schedule, and is one of very few Radio 1 shows which is not broadcast live.

Over the last few years, Bodyjack (aka Chris Finke) has been confidently carving a path very much his own through the stormy and unpredictable waters of electronic music, and refreshingly doing it on his terms. 

From the outset, his early productions on Hypercolour UTTU and Ultramajic showed incredible depth and dance floor sensibilities, frequently mastering that difficult line between genres that producers seek, but often fall short of (and often sounding contrived when trying). His vinyl-only label series “Bodytrax” (which he proudly runs with the Clone.nl crew in Holland) is an ongoing outlet for these productions; one that ebbs and flows through his passion for creating what he feels like organically and not what’s being hyped at the time. Drawing on his years of experience as a DJ and not being one to settle simply for “getting the job done”, his output is renowned for being incredibly effective and standing out in the sets of DJs the world over, with his music consistently featured on Radio 1 shows and essential mixes. In 2016, he dropped his critically “Cobra Effect EP” on DEXT which was championed by the likes of Black Madonna and Jackmaster, which led to an invitation by legendary pioneers Leftfield to remix "Song Of Life" on their historic 22 Year Anniversary re-release of “Leftism” in 2017. He also explored collaborations including “Hotshot” with long-time supporter Paul Woolford aka Special Request, and his new “Duel Series” which kicked off in late 2019 with Berlin legend Fiedel.

On the performance side, his early days saw him as a DMC DJ Championship competitor, and then cutting his teeth worldwide as a techno DJ (including a residency at the UK's largest and most respected parties “Atomic Jam” in Birmingham). His lifelong obsession with seeking out and collecting music has also paid off in spades in the form of his vast record collection, which he explores with mixes and shows he has produced for the likes of Radio 1, FACT, Mixmag, DJ Mag, and Rinse FM. Armed with these experiences and credentials, he is known as a technically skilled and incredibly intuitive DJ, taking risks where they count and never playing the same set twice. Tapping into his love affair with music and working the floor, he prides himself in being able to play pretty much anywhere, be it techno, electro & EBM in the main rooms of Berghain or Fabric, jacking Chicago and acid house alongside the originators in the “Dancemania Mixmag Lab”, or electronica & beyond supporting Leftfield on their Leftism 22 UK arena UK arena tour in 2017.
