There is a lot of fun to be found in this release. First comes the cover art, a cartoon banana. If that doesn't say fun then we don't know what does? Then there is the name of the label, Banoffee Pies Records: we have a sweet tooth here at Ransom Note so that is just fine by us. 

PREMIERE: Wendel Sield - History of Black People

Common Labour is an independent record label based in Helsinki, Finland. Fairly discreet over the internet since its creation in 2013, it has been releasing good physical records consistently over the years, mostly by its head honcho PothOles aka Tuomo Aslak Puranen, as well as a series of various EPs going by the name of "Odd Jobs" featuring some under the radar Finnish producers. Their newest 12" is by PothOles again, the "Polaroids EP", and we were immediately amazed by the quality of this release. Take "Feather Island" premiered here and think Scandinavian deep house with a touch of groove : warm and crisp pads, a solid percussion beat punctuated by a teasing synth bass, this is pure bliss ! Props to Common Labour for this fantastic 12" coming to you on June 6th.

Felipe Gordon is back on Forbidden Cuts with some tasty grooves in the form of Run Run Run from the forthcoming "Jambalaya" EP. The Bogota-based producer’s unique blend of house rhythms and acidic textures sit well within the roster of the Discotexas subsidiary. Filtered percussion and hazy arpeggios draw the track in before dropping into a classic piano progression. Driven by its hypnotic grooves the track bounces in and out of its funky hook maintaining a club friendly dynamic edge. Compared to his track Chiclago released on Forbidden Cuts in 2016, Run Run Run places more focus on the warmth and vibe rather than catching the attention with an aggressive groove. As the layers progress, vocal samples cut through the mix and compliment the wobbly bassline. In breakdowns the track slips into spacey psychedelic environments and quickly jump back into the main refrain.

Run Run Run is another friendly reminder of the carefully curated selections on Forbidden Cuts. With an emphasis on variety, the Lisbon-based label seeks to represent the diversity of culture within the Portuguese scene. Gordon’s creations drift around the multicultural influences in Lisbon while also maintaining his own distinct warmth and arrangements. Pairing up with Forbidden Cuts again could see him take another step towards reaching an even greater audience.

One of Dortmund's finest exports, Mr. Fries, returns to Wolf Music bringing his signature sample heavy house touch back to the label. 

Six tracks of MPC saturated cuts take the stage for WOLFEP045 with the hazy Rhodes, rhythmic stabs and sax flutters of 'Nocturnal' opening up the e.p. 'Sun' takes things on a percussive workout before 'Work' leads you down a road of dusty Detroit loops, akin to the productions of the Motor City greats.

On the flip you get a smokey jazz, sun-drenched roller in 'Getright', moving into 'Junkfoodnmusic' which encapsulates that comatosed feeling it's titled after down to a T - dropping the pace down into a laid back jam. Closing out the e.p. 'Thesimplethings' driving bassline, fizzing percussion & sensual samples offer up a late night groover to round off another stellar outing from Mr. Fries.

When Fouk & Glenn Astro remix a new artist you know what the vibe is: Dirty DIY house with a heavy funk vibe. 
Mangabey is the new kid on the Toy Tonics family and he is a master of this style. He lives in Lyon/ France (and is a good friend of Folamour who remixed his first EP on Toy Tonics some months ago). 
But Mangabey takes the whole new Funk-House sound to another level. While many of his colleagues work with samples, Mangabey studied Jazz piano and collects vintage synths. And so he plays most of the stuff himself and bring in a lot of personality.
His works could remind the vibe of New York Soul House from the 1990ies or the sounds from the West London scene from 20 years ago, but definitely he adds a modern, edgy touch to it.

Mangabey aka Jose Fehner is an interesting personality: Born in the south of France in a family of traveling artists. As a kid he has been living on a boat and in caravans, traveling France and Africa with a wild theater collective directed by his parents who are actors. Later he went to music university and now finally, by age of 22, he lives in Lyon. Lyon is becoming France’ second music town.  The town that has the most vibrant club and producer scene right now. So, yes:  There is a lot to come from there… a lot from Mangabey.

The Lumberjack In Hell label boss takes us on a little trip through one of his own eclectic sets, starting with the oddball boogie of You Move Me and then moving on to the hands-in-the-air positivity of Spreading Energy. On the flip it’s the uptempo afro burner Don’t Be Sabi Say, with the 12” concluding on the whimsically catchy I Wish I Knew The Words. Tried and tested and found true!
