Due up next on 100% Silk is Luke Thinnes aka Dubharp, with a cerebrally stimulating eight-track album - Spiral Heights. A fixture in the Rhinoceropolis underground show space in Denver, Dubharp is just the latest of many diverse projects under Thinnes’ belt. This time around, Thinnes focuses on a new-age, dub-infused sound that strikes a balance between dark and light, familiar and unfamiliar, current and bygone.

Spiral Heights perfectly captures a vision of future Balearic-influenced music. Dubharp seamlessly combines synthetic wind, strings and mallets and fuses distinct 4th world rhythms into the mix. The title of Spiral Heights is itself a gesture of gratitude to the ecstatic refractions of dub echo, expanding our perception of space and time.

“Bamboo Cross” is the seventh track on the album and features the dub legend Lee “Scratch” Perry. This track is a culmination of the dub sound that is so prevalent throughout Spiral Heights. Perry’s vocals call out throughout the track and rest gently atop a bed of mind-bending echoes that are rooted in Dubharp’s dub-influences. Whirling drums offer old world rhythms, with heavenly harp-like plucks.

Though born of improvisation, the album's eight tracks unspool with precision and finesse, percolating syncopations of percussion, bass, bird sounds, glitch, and gleaming circuitry. All in all, Dubharp does an excellent job incorporating elements from the future and otherworldly, as well as our more primitive past.

UK based producer Hugo Massien has been slowly but surely making a name for himself over the past few years. Metamorphosis marks Hugo’s debut LP on the E-Beamz Record label.

Having first released in 2014 he quickly built a legion of fans who absolutely loved his bass heavy breaks, sometimes wonky beats, trance rave, and acid tinged sound. By 2018 he had released a winning string of EPs on various imprints including XL Recordings, Keysound, 17 Steps, Unknown to the Unknown and of course E-Beamz.

He now drops his debut album Metamorphosis which brings together all the best elements of Hugo’s creativity into one cohesive release.

Tech Support is set to release a new EP on Silver Bear Records, it comes accompanied by two stellar remixes from both Parris and System Olympia. They are each unique and destined for damage in the clubs, whenever that may be.

Aspetuck is kicking off 2021 with a strong release on Reykjavik’s Legaffe Tales label entitled ‘Tonic’. Nestled away in the quiet woods of Vermont, Aspetuck blends inspirations ranging from floaty breakbeats, euphoria-driven house, and slow burning electro. To date, productions have landed him on labels such as Cairo Xpress and Route 8’s This Is Our Time label. With each passing release, Aspetuck picks up steam and makes it clear that he has a bright future in dance music.

The Tonic EP begins with Crystal Clear and a fluttering synthscape, before progressing into the acidic overtones and tightened electro drum programming of the second track, Squid. Friuli, the third track, feels like the perfect balance of the various influences that Aspetuck brings to the table. The title track finishes off the EP is blazing electro fashion, with a definitively thumping kick and bassline and captivating drum sequencing. Aspetuck structures their releases to slowly build up the energy from the beginning to end, offering tension and a clear direction for the listener. This is one artist to keep an eye out for!

Back in October 2020, South-Korean-based Honey Badger Records founder, JNS, released his debut album, “Miasma”. The album’s dark, cavernous techno and glitchy drum’n’bass textures felt in lock-and-step with the overwhelmingly bleak and unpredictable mood of last year. JNS channeled these feelings of anxiety and uncertainty into an album that pummels headstrong into these emotions, embracing rather than fleeing their all-encompassing dread. 

	For this new release, JNS has recruited his label-mates to remix four tracks off the album. Opening track, “Miasma”, goes to upstart producer Closet Yi, who takes the decaying, anxiety-laden pulse of the original and turns it into a hi-definition blockbuster of a track. Despite putting on some polish, the track retains much of its corrosive, highly volatile energy, as the central drum’n’bass refrain and synth washes are largely there intact. Yi expertly deploys the acid-squiggles JNS concocted right at the start of the track, to immediately establish that alien, post-apocalyptic vibe.

Yi’s remix betrays a clear admiration for the original. Rather than uprooting its foundation, she takes elements already there and amplifies them to dizzying, intoxicating effect. By the time the track reaches its apex and then devolves into a jerky, drum’n’bass stomper, you’ll be left reeling from the virtuosity on display.

PREMIERE: JNS - Miasma (Closet Yi Remix)

Sicilian-born, UK-based DJ and producer Clafrica has been heavily influenced by the dub and reggae sounds from a very early age and the geographical proximity to Africa allowed him to soak in the various cultures that exists in Sicily - moulding him into the musician that he is today. Fast forward, he makes his Darker Than Wax debut with Never Not Balling - a dazzling sonic exploration of nostalgia, vintage circuits, and basketball. Owing his first musical exposure to the Space Jam soundtrack and 90s basketball video games, as well as
his first time seeing a DJ courtside at the And1 Mixtape European tour, Clafrica’s love of both music and basketball have always gone hand in hand. After honing his craft as a DJ and studio engineer from as early as 12 years old, and moving from Sicily to Edinburgh in 2010
to further his studies of sound design, Clafrica has emerged as a certified production mad scientist and studio boffin in his own right. Fast forward to 2019, Clafrica emerged as one of the most exciting new producers on the scene with a string of releases on labels such as Axe On Wax, Vakum, Deep&Roll, and Perpetua.
A collection of tracks created over the last 2 years, Never Not Balling is one of Clafrica’s most well rounded offerings to date, expressing a number of moods and emotions through his signature style, all the while showcasing the artist’s mastery of studio techniques and hardware. In the theme of fusing his love of sport and music, ‘Skip Thru Dat Lane’ is a mid-lockdown electro reflection on overcoming difficult times, with the artist envisioning himself dodging negativity like Allen Iverson skipping through the lane. On the heavier side,
‘U Can’t Guard Me’ is a pure release of stress and frustration, driven by unstoppable hi-hats and a punishing bassline. ‘Halftime’ fuses the sound of old Amiga sound chips with raw drum machines as an ode to the basketball video games of Clafrica’s youth. At every point in the record, Clafrica’s sonic depth and stylish approach is on display, driven by raw and unrelenting dance music energy.
