You’ve probably heard by now that Australia is in the midst of an unprecedented climate disaster. Catastrophic bushfires are raging across much of Australia and have not only taken a huge human and economic toll but have also delivered heavy blows to native flora and fauna. 

BONN are passionate about contributing to a brighter future and are committed to taking action, especially when politicians won’t. In response to the tragic events that are taking place in theirs and possibly your homeland, they asked some talented friends to contribute to a compilation to support those affected by the devastating bushfires across Australia. 

Proceeds will be donated to a campaign set up by a Yorta Yorta man and community rights advocate, Neil Morris (Drmngnow). The money raised will offer culturally sensitive, specific and direct support to communities with critical costs to cover—such as temporary relocation, basic amenities, property repairs and ongoing support where necessary.

A note from BONN also to say "we acknowledge that these tragedies have occurred on Sacred Indigenous lands where Sovereignty has not been ceded. The ongoing connection of First Nations people’s to country and culture is critical to life on this land. We acknowledge our ancestors and elders past present and future."

After a long hiatus our unsigned series is back. Producers who have appeared on the series so far have been approached by labels and subsequently had material released by them after we helped shed some light on the new talents. We hope we’re able to do the same with the next one in the bunch, coming from Melbourne's @darcykhalid. 

Get to know a little about him below:

Hey, I’m Darcy Khalid.

I’ve been producing music for about five years and DJing and playing piano for a little longer. Since I moved to Melbourne in 2016, I’ve been producing music with at least the vague intention to release it publicly. I wanted to wait until I felt I had a sound that was my own, and I guess that time has come.

My Unsigned track is from my debut EP. The record features three quite different tracks, including elements of ambience, techno, drum & bass – even hints of jazz on the A1. Hakone Schoolyard is the A2, and if someone called it a broken beat ambient techno jam, I wouldn’t call them crazy.

It evolved three times over about 18 months. I made a version, got bored of it, left it alone, then repeated that process several months later. What you hear now is take three. I can be a bit ambitious with my compositions, so they’re often long and multi-sectioned. My favourite songs will change a lot, weaving between atmospheres, energy levels and tempos, often seamlessly, but occasionally with bold abruption. I tried to do both here. I hope it worked.

Earth Boys return with another full length 12” via London based label Shall Not Fade. Their first release out of the UK, Earth Tones, is focused and upbeat with a range of styles — jungle, breaks, deep house and vintage sounds we’ve come to expect from the Brooklyn based duo.

Earth Tones will be accompanied by a remix record entitled Earth Tones Remixes including prolific NYC acts such as J. Albert and Baltra, Atlanta heavy hitter Stefan Ringer and Shall Not Fade label mates Felipe Gordon, Interplanetary Criminal, Effy, Soela & LXURY.

Following on from last year's debut LP 'Exotic Language' Joe Morris assembles a killer line up of diverse producers for the remix package 'Exotic Remixes'.
Gallo turns the opener 'Firefly Island' into a sunset, acid soaked trance out. Pacific Coliseum gently uplifts the cerebral 'Celestial Plantation' with some fine live guitar work. On 'Echo Station' Coyote turn up the dubwise energy, while James Bright brings his super polished modern balearica sound to 'Acid Safari'. Native Cruise infuses crunchy house drums with the piano hook on 'Perfume' and Manuel Darquart get Technique-era New Order with 'A Dance With Jupiter'. With 'Dream Clouds' Newborn Jr brings the house down with an irresistible guitar hook and italo arps; Bliss Inc fuses his modern progressive style to 'Spirit Walker' while Man Power closes the proceedings with a tribal heavy house workout on 'Acid Safari.

John “Cyclonix” Wilcox is the original raver, the sort of person who knows the roots of his music inside out. He can craft an electronic music sculpture that echoes both the classic dance sound of the UK (bass heavy, chord based, break sampling and crisp), and the purest Chicago and Detroit house and techno influences. Some of the highlights on his career include releasing on cult labels like Tusk Wax, Smuggler’s Inn, Bristol’s Boogie Café and Phuture Shock Musik or contemporary dance floor soul staple Broadcite among other highly recommended projects.

“Efeito Borboleta” is his take on the Percebes sound and it features three incredible originals and a home-made remix by girl of the moment Sheri Vari.

It kicks off with “Butterfly Effect”: a deep stomper that could well have been released on Underground Quality or Sistrum. It is space and emotion, bubbling with jungle breaks and 909 power, channeled through the medium of deep, touching house music.

“Gift of a Patient Soul” is a slower burner, a crunchy jazzy mid-tempo acid funker - perfect to get that foot tap on. The remix by Sheri Vari flips it into a psychedelic deep trip, tapping into that odd parallel world where Rick Wade did a track with Maurice Fulton.

“Warm as Hoth” closes the EP. A funky live bass is intertwined by dreamy chords and chaotic melodies, made of stuttering vocal samples. The kind of thing you’d expect if Todd Edwards did a track with Marc Mac: classic UK garage with a jazz-funk vibe and a Detroit Techno feel. Hard to define, but very easy to listen to and play out.

Following releases on Futureboogie, Don't Be Afraid, Omena and Alfresco Disco, Berlin-based producer @Kemback makes a long-awaited arrival on Bristol imprint Fate & Fiction to head up their latest VA compilation.

This compilation also features tracks from label boss Thrilogy, Colombian artist Joint4Nine, and Ment. ‘Set Me Free’ pairs lush pads and breaks with a soaring vocal for a ravey, hands-in-the-air opener.

Shadowy deep house genius Halvtrak opens his box of unreleased magic to EABE, and a super tasty 4-tracker is the result. Conjured with a pure hardware setup, this release consists of pure uber-classy deep house madness. 

The opener Cabinets teleports the listener to Chicago in 1989. Irresistibly jacking yet dark synth riff is joined by some choice pads and keeps up a strong, danceable atmosphere all the way to the end. 

The second track Raised Voices starts up with a hypnotic rhythm that slowly builds up to another amazing pad in the ultra deep late 80s house style. Dark atmosphere is carried by a warm man-machine groove. 

Mysteries of the Heart, the third track, opens with familiar ingredients: soulful rhythm patterns and soothing retro pads. However, this time the artist brings his actual voice into the mix, nodding to the deservedly famous Fingers Inc. classic “Mystery of Love”. 

To finish things off, The Dark Backward opens up with a hard drum pattern and a bold synth riff, growing into a compelling piece of fresh, retro-futurist electronica. Imagine finding a box of audio tapes by a totally overlooked and unknown genius in the vein of Larry Heard and Glenn Underground, but who sadly has passed away back in 1990 at the height of his creativity, and you’re getting close to what this EP sounds like.
