UK based producer Hugo Massien has been slowly but surely making a name for himself over the past few years. Metamorphosis marks Hugo’s debut LP on the E-Beamz Record label.

Having first released in 2014 he quickly built a legion of fans who absolutely loved his bass heavy breaks, sometimes wonky beats, trance rave, and acid tinged sound. By 2018 he had released a winning string of EPs on various imprints including XL Recordings, Keysound, 17 Steps, Unknown to the Unknown and of course E-Beamz.

He now drops his debut album Metamorphosis which brings together all the best elements of Hugo’s creativity into one cohesive release.

Due up next on 100% Silk is Luke Thinnes aka Dubharp, with a cerebrally stimulating eight-track album - Spiral Heights. A fixture in the Rhinoceropolis underground show space in Denver, Dubharp is just the latest of many diverse projects under Thinnes’ belt. This time around, Thinnes focuses on a new-age, dub-infused sound that strikes a balance between dark and light, familiar and unfamiliar, current and bygone.

Spiral Heights perfectly captures a vision of future Balearic-influenced music. Dubharp seamlessly combines synthetic wind, strings and mallets and fuses distinct 4th world rhythms into the mix. The title of Spiral Heights is itself a gesture of gratitude to the ecstatic refractions of dub echo, expanding our perception of space and time.

“Bamboo Cross” is the seventh track on the album and features the dub legend Lee “Scratch” Perry. This track is a culmination of the dub sound that is so prevalent throughout Spiral Heights. Perry’s vocals call out throughout the track and rest gently atop a bed of mind-bending echoes that are rooted in Dubharp’s dub-influences. Whirling drums offer old world rhythms, with heavenly harp-like plucks.

Though born of improvisation, the album's eight tracks unspool with precision and finesse, percolating syncopations of percussion, bass, bird sounds, glitch, and gleaming circuitry. All in all, Dubharp does an excellent job incorporating elements from the future and otherworldly, as well as our more primitive past.

As the settled dust lay bare on the road to uncertainty. Out of the mud the Planet Sundae label springs back from a two-year hiatus, presenting the feverous Florentine ..... DJ Blasy for its next cone.

Quantasoma is inspired by The Drowned World by J.G. Ballard. Set in a future where the ice caps have melted and the rising oceans have submerged so much of the inhabited world. A new nature has formed here, and cities have become primeval swamps. Humans are now in rapid decline as giant lizards, dragonflies and insects thrive.

The music on this record looks to describe this new world, and unlike the book where the story is told from a human perspective, the point of view here is shifted to the eyes of nature. What for humans is a dystopian future, for the natural world it is an insignificant change. Emotionless and detached, these processes carry on regardless of what is happening, like photosynthesis in the quantasomes.

This release comes in a full-colour artwork by Berlin-based artist Olya Bazilevich with the vinyl on a limited run of 150 copies. The digital release is fitted with a bonus track.

Honey Badger Records are already off to a scorching start to 2021. Back on March 5th, label-head JNS dropped the remix-package to his 2020 debut album, Miasma Remix, which we covered on the site. One of the remixes on that project was courtesy of electronic duo Two Tone Shape, which saw the Seoul-native duo lending their expansive, live-set-programming chops to the track, “Tipping Point”. The duo released their own breakout project on Honey Badger last November, Fantastic Machines, and now, the label is giving it the same treatment as JNS’s debut, with a remix album dropping April 7th.

 Tapped for closing track “Nouveau Monde”––a short, yet expertly paced ambient closer––Seoul-based DJ, Mignon, drops us right in media res with his remix. Rather than abiding by the slow-burn formula of the original, Mignon immediately hits us with the sonic wall that the original methodically develops. However, he still manages to retain the sense of pacing and grandeur that the original so elegantly displayed, while introducing a higher BPM and several more breaks. The peak of this track soars to heights and a sense of awe only hinted at in the original, but all the while manages to never feel over-the-top or as if it’s fully deconstructing the original edifice upon which it is built. 

With this release, Honey Badger are quickly establishing themselves as one of the most prolific and versatile indie-House labels not only in South Korea, but all across the globe. The range of talent on display here is nothing short of amazing.

In at number 15, Cairo's very own @hassan-abou-alam brings all the flavours for this week's dark and twisted mix. An absolutely thrilling ride from start to finish!

The mix series and music platform Mantissa takes its first steps into the label space with Mantissa 001. Written and produced by a close friend to the Mantissa family, this unnamed and elusive artist has begun the label with a bang, three club focused, space inspired tracks designed to decimate a dancefloor or atone a night's shenanigans at an after's.
Space Cadet opens the extra-terrestrial affair, weaving from acoustic elements to electronic and eclectic synth lines. Frozen Bounce finalising the A side with a wobbly number, woven together with quick cuts and jerky elements. U10A, the most structured of a complex affair, is a warming club tool perfect for both beginning and finishing an evening. It's remix similarly suitable for any party specific scenario, produced by the infamously talented artist Ciel.

“Decline Vol. 1” is the first in a series of ambient focused releases by Entrancer. This series is primarily concerned with evolving textures and the emotional fragments found within them. Buried between these textures are meditations on the systems of oppression steering our world into chaos and decline. Ambient protest music. 

Recorded and composed in the Summer of 2018 using a Serge Modular Synthesizer, Elektron Digitone, Zoom H4n and Cocoquantus.

Aspetuck is kicking off 2021 with a strong release on Reykjavik’s Legaffe Tales label entitled ‘Tonic’. Nestled away in the quiet woods of Vermont, Aspetuck blends inspirations ranging from floaty breakbeats, euphoria-driven house, and slow burning electro. To date, productions have landed him on labels such as Cairo Xpress and Route 8’s This Is Our Time label. With each passing release, Aspetuck picks up steam and makes it clear that he has a bright future in dance music.

The Tonic EP begins with Crystal Clear and a fluttering synthscape, before progressing into the acidic overtones and tightened electro drum programming of the second track, Squid. Friuli, the third track, feels like the perfect balance of the various influences that Aspetuck brings to the table. The title track finishes off the EP is blazing electro fashion, with a definitively thumping kick and bassline and captivating drum sequencing. Aspetuck structures their releases to slowly build up the energy from the beginning to end, offering tension and a clear direction for the listener. This is one artist to keep an eye out for!
