Originally from Normandy now residing in the country's capital, French DJ and producer Adam Boufeldja (aka Adam BFD) has been making a serious name for himself, having put out a string of self-released singles and through his own self-titled Youtube channel.

Adam’s tracks have always been vivid, detailed portraits; drawing from memories and influences from around the world, and his latest EP on Running Out Of Steam is no exception; using his eclectic tastes to produce a record truly unique, and brimming with personality. 

‘I’ll be walking’ meanders through an always evolving city, creating space and sense of an otherwise chaotic and fleeting world. The track’s softly spoken synths hold the torch, while the effortless drums walk us home. ‘Call A Taxi’ follows suit, a fruitful marriage between shuffling drum patterns and hypnotic tones, while the track's subtle low-end provides the glue; closing off an A side that feels more like a story being told than another dance-floor memento. 

Title track ‘No Advice’ launches the B side on a slightly more ominous tone, in a microcosmic portrait of opposing forces; before ‘An Ode To La Condesa’ glides through like a letter from an old friend, the smell of fresh ink still prevalent on the page as we’re whisked away through the wide-tree lined avenues of La Condesa. The EP comes to a close with ‘For The Good Times’ combining nostalgic tinged leads, forward-marching drums and sprawling pads that act as a backdrop to another highly impressive EP from one of France’s best emerging artists.

Originally from West Wales now residing in Amsterdam in a studio nestled beside the river Ij, Maroki now joins the ROOS family following a string of stellar releases. He leaves nothing to chance, using his classically trained skills and expertly engineered sounds into a pool of influences that range from breaks, moon-lit acid and heads-down chuggy goodness. 

The record launches with title track ‘Emerald City’ a moody cut that whisks you away from the city's bustling streets and off the beaten track. Maroki’s fixed hand helps elements blend seamlessly into another, in what feels like a personal guide through the emerald’s subterranean. Then comes the gentle and tranquil electronics of ‘Alfred Stole My Brain’ both welcoming and meditative, while the swing in drums provide dance-floor functionality and set the pace. The A side comes to a grand close with ‘Talk2Me’ a brooding acid cut that mixes in elements of breaks and aquatic synths. The track's swelling energy feeds from the A side's previous two, culminating in a build up of emotion and speed. 

‘Total Recall’ raises its hypnotic head, a series of winding synths and 4/4 kick drums creating a maze of sound, before perhaps the record's hidden gem ‘All Be Over’ arrives like an old friend. The track’s familiar sound design coupled with Maroki’s distinct personality create a warm and lasting friendship; melting together old and new perspectives. ‘Slower’ rounds off the EP, an equally stunning and fiery mix of breaks and angelic electronics.

Czech producer Sonority makes his debut on Dutch imprint Manual Music with Letting Go, a collaboration with his student and vocalist Katarina Demska (aka Katska). Blending progressive house drive with timeless deep house finesse, the track showcases Sonority's knack for emotive atmospheres, honed through releases on labels such as Fenestra, Distinctive, Traum Schallplatten, Liquid, Rune, as well as his work composing for ads, theatre, and live performances supporting names like Jon Hopkins, Max Cooper, and Nathan Fake.

Two standout remixes round out the release: Coastlines, the joint project of AllezVed and HEFE with credits on Colorize, ZeroThree, Sekora, deliver a lush, cinematic reimagining full of soaring synths and soundscapes. Meanwhile, Teom & Kiaro, with Kiaro a familiar name on Manual and Teom associated with Mango Alley, Art Vibes, RKP, dive deeper into heady progressive textures for a hypnotic late-night interpretation.

Letting Go captures a moment of artistic connection and sets a strong first mark for Sonority on the long-running Manual Music.

There’s a lofty ambiguity at the core of Eternal Ocean - a self described “multimedia platform that aims to foster sustainable careers for unique artists and showcase creative work that offers intimate and engaging sensory experience through tangible products and digital media.” At its most literal Eternal Ocean is a collaborative minded outlet for current and former New York based producers like Ronan, Telesalf, and DJ Temporary. Spearheaded by the Planet Euphorique alumni Ronan, Eternal Ocean seems to find its origins in the mid 2010s Ridgewood, Queens record studio and artist collective Felt Presence which has already produced one highly noteworthy compendium record via last year’s Felt Presence LP on Ann Arbor DIY juggernaut Vanity Press. That Felt Presence’s stated mission was an “aim to facilitate healing trance states through immersive sonic and visual environments” is deeply apparent in the twelve expert cuts that make up Plant Lyfe Vol. One; an engulfing collection of deeply carved cuts of dub techno, ominous breakbeat, and submarine techno. 

Originally intended to be the debut release on Eternal Ocean back in 2018, Plant Lyfe Vol One could’ve easily made for three separate high quality releases as well. United by a particularly looming quality of aquatic dub, this compilation is comprised of three suites from collaborative teams Internal Transfer (Teleself & Ronan), Ceres (Acemo, Teleself & Ronan), and D.X.M. (DJ Temporary, Teleself & Ronan) respectively. Internal Transfer set the stage with overwhelming intention and poised follow through — lacing tracks like “Embodiment Exercise” and “Wave Progression” with a definite sense of buoyancy that turns otherwise standard lush breakbeat repetition and dub techno patterns into a presumably thundering club experience born from the palate of meditative calm. Restless techno cut “Climate Adjustment” provides respite through dubbed out wonk and diverse breakbeat based rhythms that is rich with texture and personality. 

Some of the record's most transcendent moments arrive on Ronan and Teleself’s Ceres collaborations with New York dance sire AceMo. As those two bring deft proficiency in sound design and tonal strength, Ace instills a live pulse capable of bringing the listener far from shore into uncharted waters filled with synth ripples and whip cracks. “Terre Vide” is pure live wire with a human touch to the mix that sets it apart while “Gorgon Tech”  combines a beyond filtered house propulsion with techno dissonance drowned in thin, clear layers of wet dub. We rise from the underwater grave with “Smoke & Mirrors;” a highly textural soundtrack for an ayahuasca trip that makes way to stuttering cyborg cooing and begs to be played loud. This is just straight up fascinating music that stands out amongst AceMo’s already rich and diverse catalog. 

Plant Life Vol. One closes out with its most lighthearted set of tracks courtesy of DJ Temporary’s addition to the duo as D.X.M. Bursts of dub bubbles float to the surface amid turntable scratches on “Where Are We Going?” Not sure who “Raveman” is but his featuring track “Rainbow Icicle” is a shade away from juke before mutating into stuttering electro house. The 16-bit rainforest of “Lavender Expression” makes for the only track that actually reminds me of plants on Plant Lyfe Vol One. Well non-psychedelic ones that is.

This release is the first in a three-part series titled “Musica Australis Incognita” showcasing timeless and captivating contemporary electronic music from a new-generation of Australian producers.

The series starts in Melbourne with Solar Suite’s solo debut (Escape Artist remixing) on the 16th of October. In early December, the spotlight moves to Sydney with another solo debutant, Point Guard at the controls with a PMA remix. Finally, in late January we see the return of DJ Life to the label with a fellow Melbournian Rudolf C on remix duties.

Escape Earth, aka BufoBufo and Corporeal Face, return to their own Ritual Poison label for another four-tracker of interplanetary yearning.

Opener ‘Dropping With The Force’ draws a line from Britcore to techstep intersecting at 130 breaks, acid bubbling through rowdy stabs, UK rap and rolling bass. ‘Solar Storm’ then pulses with its huge, dubby low-end, pounding drums encasing an inner core of swirling melodic elements.

On the flip, ‘Blasting Rocks’ heads to headier realms, though only just, breakbeats colliding like space debris, the alternating moods orbiting a raw Reese. ‘Universe Dub’ then closes out, a 140 stepper where dubbed out chords and restless bass meet chopped breaks and a ghostly vocal echoing through eternity.
