South African talent Deep Aztec reveals his twelve-track debut album ‘Healing Frequencies’ via his newly minted MFENGU Records imprint this summer. 

A blossoming artist within the South African electronic landscape and a name firmly on the rise, Cape Town-based DJ, producer, live act, and record label owner Deep Aztec looks set to flourish onto the global house landscape. Having played alongside artists including Black Coffee, Culoe De Song, and Floyd Lavine across South Africa’s leading music festivals and events whilst releasing via Watergate, House Afrika, and Nervous Records, early-July now welcomes the arrival of two new projects - a new label, and his debut album. A celebration of music, life, and love, his twelve-track ‘Healing Frequencies’ LP welcomes a hypnotic and resonant exploration of a maturing artist, curator, songwriter, and collaborator, whilst unveiling a fitting introduction to his new label, MFENGU.

The project is rich with creative energy from front to back, stemming from his continual desire to reinvent, rework and innovate. From the smoky and hazy Jazz-tinged territories of title track ‘Healing Frequencies’ to the futuristic planes of ‘Don’t Forget About It’, the oddball stylings of ‘Land Of Kings’ and the rich psychedelia of ‘Polygon Disco’, the twelve track body of work showcases a rich blend of house, disco, and Jazz soundscapes whilst presenting a rich and warm sound palette an array of productions covering everything the growing music lover needs. 

Through an expertly curated selection of features from both local and global artists in Dumama, L Speaks, Rona Ray, and Aztec’s own alter-ego James Blond3, the effortless collaborations all feel at home and organic, with each collaborator showcasing an unmistakable voice to transform the South African’s productions into something unique. And in turn, the stage is shared by a producer with innate studio ability, presenting the perfect opportunity for producer and artist to shine and explore new grounds. 

Exploring the fringes of diverse and intertwined genres, whilst reinterpreting its roots in house music, ‘Healing Frequencies’ presents Deep Aztecs past, present, and far-found future, opening the doors and journeying into the mind of a rising star’s own interpretation of the genre.

The late Pierce Fulton, Priori, Martyn Bootspoon, and more remix Nova Scotia’s yehno on Collection Disque Durs this July.

Following his cinematic ‘Tomorrow We’ll Be Here’ EP, the first release on Montréal’s Collection Disque Durs imprint earlier this year, yehno recruits a host of all-star remixers for ‘Tomorrow We’ll Be Here Remixes’ featuring contributions from Pierce Fulton, Ronan, Martyn Bootyspoon, Priori, and Ouri.

Released with the blessings of his family, the late Pierce Fulton’s remix of ‘We Can’ opens the release. Adding a melancholic tone to yehno’s original, swinging breakbeats, dreamy atmospherics, and shimmering FX take the forefront. yehno follows with his own 4/4 mix of ‘Lullaby’, with delicate drums padding the emotive and dynamic combination of noisy synth work and vocal chops and Planet Euphorique affiliate Ronan delivers his first-ever remix with his take on ‘Our Best Selves’, diving into sliced breakbeats and glitchy drums alongside bright, airy FM tones. Martyn Bootyspoon’s version of ‘Walk Alone’ brings squelchy synths, chopped pads, and sharp percussion to the mix.

NAFF honcho Priori flips ‘Fog Rolling’ into a hypnotic, heads-down roller, with sparse modulations and dense, moody synthesis evolving for close to ten minutes. Ghostly International graduate Ouri twists yehno’s original work into a captivating modern classical dream, swelling throughout a series of dramatic movements before an ambient mix of ‘Tomorrow We’ll Be Here’ rounds out the release, with the Nova Scotian stripping drums and reworking instruments from his own original to powerful and dramatic effect.

Founded in 2018 in Montréal, Courage Holdings is an artist management and production company that curates events such as Piknic Electronik and Igloofest. Courage now reinvents itself, focusing its efforts towards artistic content production with their new record label Collection Disques Durs.

The pair behind Broken Homes are Thoma Bulwer and his muse, Pops. They have written this album together over the past couple of years through summers of love being inspired at festivals like Houghton and Freerotation; and dark winters at spots like FOLD, the Cause, the infamous Lion and Lamb, fabric and lots of natwy underground warehouses and boats around Hackney Wick.

The eight track album has all been given a 90s and retro flavour at Thoma’s TB analogue mastering studio and the pair expressed this in the recordings as a journey-of-genres. From garage, UKG, house, electro, jungle, minimal, bleeps, rave and breaks the tracks inspiration and electronic music culture is soaked up and slapped back out through the tape machine. Any true London raver would find it hard not to shake-a-leg to this!

Coymix Ltd, the label run by friends Steffan Todorovic and Timo Rotonen, releases impeccable projects like the world’s best vineyards release the finest fuckin’ wine you’ve never tasted. I’m lucky enough to be on their promo list (thanks bois it’s a goddamn honor), and everytime I get something new, my animal instincts tell me to throw ‘em on a USB and bury them in the park close to my apartment. In my head, this is a preservation technique, one for which I’d draw myself a decent pirate map to remember where it was buried. You might think this qualifies as “taking it too far,” but they said the same thing about Avalon Emerson’s “Art of DJing” and look at her shinin’ like the hottest star. Point is, like her, I’ll do what I want with my fuckin’ bangers, OK!? When the zombie apocalypse sends YOUR loved ones into hiding, I’ll be in the park with all of MY dj and audio gear soundtracking the shredding of my entrails with a Coymix project.

Joe Reddick aka Remotif is the London based producer responsible for COY004. Prior to this outing he’s released notable projects on air miles, Pleasant Life, Familiar Strangers, and Alfresco Disco. He most often excels at creating lush dreamlike “breakscapes,” but here we find him swapping tempos for four straight emotional club bangers that extend from techy house to trance and to psychedelic breaks. He’s ditched the butt chug for a butt plug, and lemme be the first to tell you, these tunes shake the anal cavity. Quick aside, if you don’t feel a tune in your asshole are you even listening properly? As a label head myself, I must feel my butt quake before I even consider signing a tune. So yeah, big up Joe, I’m gonna need restorative surgery on my sphincter after these repeat listens.

Shall we get to the music? It’s my pleaasssureee to premiere today the B1 from COY004, or what Remotif has dubbed the “Goodbye Sunshine EP.” “Telepathic Heights” is the project’s most melancholy tune, and another beautiful take on deep Detroit and Italo house, lush with wiggly synth lines, fever dream atmospheres, and a new-age vocal sample that repeats “enter, the unexpected door.” It’s a fitting whisper for a tune that makes me feel like I’m floating through the astral plane. If I was going to walk through a random glowing door, this is the tune that’d play after crossing the threshold. But hear me out, just because this tune sounds chill, doesn’t mean that it would tear up a dance floor. This is weaponry for transitional those moments when you’re moving a crowd from a to b to c to d. Or maybe, you’re just moving yourself, in which case this tune is equal amounts of gold for your headphones.

“Telepathic Heights” and the rest of COY004 releases on August 27th via the Coymix Ltd. Bandcamp and other major retailers of vinyl and digital rekkies. Do yourself a favor and cop a piece of electronic history. I don’t write often, but when I do, it’s for something worthy. This, and everything else from the Estonian/Finnish A&R masterminds is NOT TO BE MISSED.

Philadelphia based hip hop artist, Kameelah Waheed, grew up with music all around, with world beats, island and tribal vibes coming from inside her Islamic home. MTV meshed with rap blasting from every Philly radio station, while house parties were playing four to the floor and electronica. Her musical denial was the catalyst for her explosion into sound and later her versatility as an artist. This producer, writer and performer has worked within a myriad of styles from neo soul to hip hop, to house, releasing previously on BBE, Rapster Records, and Philly Through My Ear. In 2020 she dropped her highly respectable, ‘Holding On’ on Ramrock Records.

On ‘America the Beautiful’ Kameelah delivers powerful spoken word lyrics, pledging allegiance to the people of America. To the dreamers, the lovers, the thinkers, and the risk takers, at the same time she is questioning how many rights can America change? How many souls must it break? Kameelah skilfully delivers her conscious narrative alongside a rolling hip house beat. Reminiscent of Harlem’s Last Poets who spat lyrics about the 1960s African American civil rights movement, and Gil Scott Herons’ concern on social issues, conveying his message through a fusion of funk, soul, blues and fly lyrical content. This ‘Avant-funk’ is a nod to 80s New York and the Defunkt, Talking Heads, Ze Records sounds coming out of the city at that time. Loaded with talent, the poetry is written by the hand and from the heart of Kameelah Waheed, it is also produced by Kameelah alongside Kelly Murray, with cast of musicians that have worked with the likes of Lauren Hill and the legendary Diana Ross.
 
Reworks come courtesy of two of the UKs most prolific underground production squads. Black Science Orchestra’s Ashley Beedle heads up North Street West with Jo Wallace and Daren Morris, laying their signature moves and grooves down on the title track with a vocal, instrumental and dub. It’s a homage to composers of vintage US cop show themes – Lalo Schifrin and Quincy Jones, with an undercurrent of ‘street sounds’ and tough, inner city funk, you can almost see the steam coming up through the manhole covers.  Production collective of the moment, Bruise, have been enjoying the limelight and quite rightly so, with their ‘Grand Hi’ earmarked by the Guardian, and sync’d by Grand Theft Auto.  Christian Campbell works his magic again on both vocal and instrumental, taking the title track to a whole other level of euphoric and joyous orchestral house. It’s both dark and uplifting with those shades of D town techno with soul we’ve all come to love from Bruise.

COEO are back on Toy Tonics! After uninterrupted touring around the globe, followed by a short creative break the guys come back with an even stronger sound. With the new EP they go more underground again. Its addressed to the clubs and night owls out there, who turn night into day and won't stop dancing! 

The sound is based on classic house patterns and includes a lot of cool saxophones, big piano stabs & rhythmic piano solos. They even go tribal, use arpeggios and switch into breakbeat heaven. The four Originals are a great next step in the COEO evolution. The unique warm, catchy atmosphere of the tracks can create that special COEO euphoria which made them a lot of fans. From Moodymann to Disclosure, Mall Grab to Kenny Dope, the list is long. 

It’s fantastic to see how popular they became over the last couple of years. The last COEO vinyl sold over 2500 copies and some of their tracks have millions of Spotify plays. It’s DJ FOOD. Pure bliss!
