Jamaican saxophonist & arranger Cedric Im Brooks is one of my most cherished reggae artist. Actually, confining him to the reggae scene would be a massive understatement. 
A brilliant musician, he kept on blurring the lines between spiritual Free-jazz (think Sun Ra), Afro grooves (think Fela), Latin rhythms and, of course, Reggae. 
A cornerstone of legendary label Studio One, his musical legacy is impressive and if you're not familiar with him, I urge you to dig into his most famous albums, mostly recorded in the 70's with his band The Light Of Saba ("United Africa", "Im Flash Forward" or "The Magical Light Of Saba") & get ready for some colourful funky journey.

"Africa" is one of my favorite track by him, an afro-funk jam whose joyful & infectious horns chorus is hard to resist. With a clear hint at the "back to Motherland" Rasta myth, "Africa" is also a great example of Cedric's spiritual Rastafari faith, often present in his songs lyrics.

In case you didn't know, April 21st marks this year's worldwide Record Store Day. On the 3rd Saturday in April every year, record stores across the globe unveil special releases, cut prices, and host in-store performances all in the name of WAX. For this year’s RSD, New York City powerhouse Razor-N-Tape has something special in store. The Férias ’77 Reworks from label co-head JKriv, a longtime lover of Brazilian sounds, is an 8 song double 12” compiling reworks he’s created over nearly a decade, drawing from some of his most revered and respected sources.

“Rainha Do Mar” is a laid-back tropical funk cut oozing in that standard Brazilian swag. Smooth as hell vocals accompany funky synth and guitar lines that will likely soundtrack many summer days this year. For me, Brazilian music defines happiness and relaxation. It’s simply not possible to feel anything but amazing listening to it. “Rainha Do Mar” is a near perfect edit. It stands on its own while giving plenty of breathing room to the original track.

In total, this release sets a high bar; 45 minutes of exceptional music and a true masterclass for anyone dedicated to making edits. With beautifully vibrant artwork practically jumping off the sleeve, a free download card, and a cheeky sticker pack included, this one is an absolute RSD essential!

Marcel Vogel’s Amsterdam based label Lumberjacks in Hell arises once again with something raw, soulful, and extremely fresh for your listening pleasure. This time, they’ve tapped the deeply prolific Bristol-based house connoisseur Andy Compton, who’s had a long and venerable career both as a soloist and part of the legendary trio of The Rurals, and who’s also released more than 31 albums and over 135 EPs. This project sees Andy join forces with the African artist Shamrock and the Swahili vocalist Asali for four sun-drenched boogie tracks that they recorded in South Africa.

“Nifanyeje,” the projects stand-out track is a slow groover with one hell of a bassline. Adding to the “smoothness” is what seems to be a suite of live instrumentation including organic percussion, gentle guitar, funky brass, light key stabs, and a gorgeous, airy vocal. A track like this demands you to chill. Don’t listen to this in the morning, you won’t get anything done for the rest of the day. If I didn’t have a job to do I’d roll a joint and listen to it 100 times. Anyways, just added this burner to my “Rosé Season” playlist on Spotify. Hand me my slips, fam.

Bunny Chow, the 31st EP from Lumberjacks in Hell, couldn’t be a better release. It drops on May 7th, and will likely soundtrack your summer. On May 7th, support the musicians who appear on this record by shelling out some cash for the wax. You won’t be sorry, and you might get laid if you play it.

On April 19th, DJs for Climate Action (DJS4CA) present the second annual EARTH NIGHT; an initiative harnessing the energy of the global nightlife scene to raise awareness and funds for climate action. Taking place in the week leading up to Earth Day, the team will release an impressive music compilation and sponsor parties in Brooklyn, Berlin and beyond to shine light on the challenge facing our planet and the unique role musicians can play.

This year DJS4CA launch EARTH NIGHT RECORDS with a compilation that gathers new music from over 50 artists from 12 countries including Simon Meija (Bomba Estereo), Infinity Ink, Nicola Cruz, Little Boots, and many others. It will become available for pre-order exclusively through Bandcamp starting March 11th, and tracks will drop every week leading up to the full release on 4/19.

To show our support for such an important initiative, we are sharing one of the songs from the compilation today. By happy chance, it just so happens to be from Boltings Bits fave Bosq! Titled "Many Hands," the Colombian-based maestro describes this tune as, "[...] a mix of rhythms and styles from around the world, and a representation of many simple pieces coming together to create a solution even when the setbacks mean you have to start over and rebuild again […]”

Poignant, yet resolute, this quote not only encapsulates the feel of the track but also represents the valiant efforts of the DJs and organizers from around the globe who are joining forces to raise awareness around climate change - hopefully compelling governments and corporations alike to implement solutions to solve this imminent problem. Having launched just last year, you can rest assured that this will not be the last EARTH NIGHT and that DJS4CA are going to keep fighting the good fight until this battle is won!
