Booms and Claps started a year ago this week, and to celebrate our birthday we've teamed with Saturate Records to release the first installment of our BnC mix series. Bios and Zeke Beats absolutely blew us away with this mixtape. The selection is insane, the mixing is full of genius transitions and blends, and Zeke Beats' expert scratching over the top takes it all to another level. When we all listened for the first time, our BnC chat window filled with far more "OMG!!"'s than a group of grown men should ever utter.

We are proud to present you the second edition of our compilation series, Booms and Claps Volume 2. While Volume 1 showcased hella West Coast producers, we've cast our net wider this year to include a cast of producers from across the bass spectrum. We have DRILL DRILL coming in hot from Hamburg, Philly's finest Dev79 and Shanghai badman Conrank rounding out our West-centric selection. We also hit up local favorites Shlump, Sayer, Tsuruda, ONHELL, The OriGinALz, S∆LO and Chrome Wolves as well as two lesser known producers we've had our ear on, Seattle's Charlux and Humboldt's SuDs. The results speak for themselves, everyone brought their A game and we couldn't be more pleased.

The Hungarian-born badman is as diverse in his productions and selections as he has been in home bases; his catalog has touched on dubstep, dancehall, jungle, footwork, drum and bass, reggae, halftime beats, and most recently, UK funky, all while residing everywhere from Bristol to Tokyo to New York City. We're proud to present the latest single from the "Worst Behavior Vol. 1" compilation, the debut compilation release from Anna Morgan & Bell Curve's new "Worst Behavior" record label/event series. These two have been making huge waves in NYC's soundsystem culture scene, and we were especially impressed when we caught Anna's set at Outlook Festival in Croatia last year. They're impressive curators behind the decks, as promoters, and in the studio, and we can't wait to see where they take their new label project! 

Today's premiere comes to us from a Booms and Claps favorite, Hungarian-born DJ Madd. With huge releases on some of our most-loved labels ranging from Tumble Audio to Cosmic Bridge to his own personal imprint, Roots & Future, along with a massive guest mix for us last month, it was a no-brainer to premiere some more new content from him. "Pak Up Ya Dub" clocks in at 170 BPM with an infectious halftime groove and big 808's, and I'd even go as far as to say that it is an "absolute stomper." Booms and Claps Mix 033 comes to us from one of Calgary, AB’s finest exports: the ever-consistent, diverse, and tasteful OAKK. We’re big fans of Western Canada’s bass music output, and OAKK is a delicious and integral slice of that Canadian crop. His sound tells a tale of refined beauty, unpredictability and spontaneity, and pure graft. It’s minimal, yet explosive… soft, but speaks loudly… serious, but playful. Something we find admirable in a producer is never taking the obvious route in production and composition, and that’s the name of the game for OAKK: each track explores new territory while retaining the familiarity of his signature sound. Coming off a huge set this summer at Merritt, BC’s Bass Coast Festival, a phenomenal release on Greazus’ Aufect Records imprint in May, and a big year for his club night in Calgary, “New Wave”, 2018 has seen impressive growth for OAKK, and we’ll undoubtedly be keeping a close eye on him in 2019. 

Almost as impressive as his productions are his skills as a DJ, and this mix is a clear representation of his talent as a selector. Ranging from UK drill rap, dark 130 breaks, dubstep, footwork jungle, 85 bpm wonky hip-hop beats, halftime stompers, and several of his own vocal bootlegs and DJ edits, OAKK really goes the distance here and displays his commitment to diversity, flow, and distinctiveness. BnC Mix 033: OAKK

While the worlds of techno and dubstep have traditionally existed on separate planes without much opportunity for overlap, the past several years have seen those universes collide and spawn a landscape of deep 130 bpm beats that draw from the analog, raw sounds of techno, the driving rhythmic structures of breaks and 4 on the floor music, and the dark, low-end oriented vibe of dubstep. This hybrid sound has been supported by everyone from dubstep legends like Loefah, Biome, and Pinch, to techno dons like Hodge, to newcomers like Madam X, Walton, and Hypho.

Today’s installment in the Booms and Claps Mix Series comes to us from one of the most exciting newcomers to this sound: Manchester, UK’s HYPHO. With releases on labels ranging from the deep wonky dubstep and grime of Encrypted Audio to the dark breakbeats of Stanton Warriors’ Punks Music, Hypho has quickly solidified himself at the forefront of the hybrid 130 style over the past several years. He draws influence from all over the spectrum: jungle, jackin’ house, garage, drum and bass, and even donk music, as he recently stated in an interview with the massive bass music outlet UKF. After a huge summer in 2018 with a debut US tour and shows all over Europe, we can't wait to see what Hypho has up his sleeve for next year. Meet Barisone: a true tastemaker whose sets are almost as beloved as the man behind the music; and for good reason. Between his curation of the Wake the Town party series based in Portland, OR alongside local dons PRSN and Danny Corn, his status as a household name in the underground electronic music community up and down the West Coast, and his impressive resume of performances everywhere from Shambhala to Burning Man to Bass Coast, it was only a matter of time before we had him on mix duties for Booms and Claps. Every Barisone mix has an entirely unique feel to it, but his signature sound always shines through, no matter the context, and the same can certainly be said for BnC Mix 035. "Cole Edwards aka OAKK, comes from a generation of artists that know only too well that being 'genre bound' can be the enemy of musical innovation. Unchained is truly excited to be working with an artist of this ilk – a producer that has such a diverse pallet of sounds and rhythm the he is helping move our musical landscape forward.

Whilst OAKK has hit numerous home runs, such as his runaway tune Sleepless and the ground breaking Hysterical EP, Unchained asked him to raise the bar further - to unite his full breadth of musical influence spanning Drum’n'Bass, Dancehall, Trap and Hip Hop into a single multi-track release. When we think of the hybrid sounds of jungle, footwork, drum and bass, and hip-hop, the first place that comes to mind isn't necessarily Ireland. However, some of our favorite recent releases in this realm have come from the Emerald Isle, via one of the most exciting labels in the bass music game; Rua Sound, and we're starting to think maybe we should be paying more attention to the Irish. They simply don't miss, and with a label roster sporting legends like TMSV, Sully, Sam Binga, Lewis James, and more, they have the talent to back it up. 

Today's premiere is from the RUA008 "The General" release from London's Touchy Subject. He's been somewhat quiet over the past year, after a couple big releases including a very well-received EP on Fracture's Astrophonica as well as a freshman release on Rua Sound. We're excited to hear him back with another EP on Rua, and we're proud to present the latest single from the release, "Seek and Find." [PREMIERE] Touchy Subject - Seek And Find

Despite blasting onto the scene with a huge debut release on Exit Records just last year, Canada's Groves is already getting consistent DJ support from folks like Alix Perez, Om Unit, dBridge, and Fracture. His tunes can be heard doing damage on bass music dance floors all over the world, especially his halfstep weapon "Hennessy Brown" on the recent Astrophonica compilation. Drawing heavy influence from the wobbles of the dubstep and 140 scene with a jungle and drum & bass twist, Groves has developed a unique sound that's already very recognizable as his own. Even so, he's just getting started, and we can't wait to hear what's coming next from Toronto's slowfast prodigal son. 

In the meantime, he has a huge EP entitled "VOTPW" forthcoming next Friday, March 28th, on the Hong Kong imprint Unchained Recordings. This label has also seen a quick rise to success, with several critically acclaimed releases from artists like Sinistarr, OAKK, and Subp Yao just over the past year since their inception. As avid supporters of the underground bass music scene in the Pacific Northwest, we would be terribly remiss to overlook the powerhouses that are Portland's Sublimate Records and Calgary's Noctilux Collective. These two outlets have not only been throwing amazing parties for years and nurturing their respective local scenes, but have consistently been releasing music from some of the most incredible up and coming producers in the world.

They're set to release a collaborative compilation entitled "Continuum" this week, and the 14 track offering certainly holds up to the impossibly high standard they've set for themselves. Complete with a flavorful sampling of local and international artists, the tracklist touches on everything from breaks to jungle to chunky hip hop beats and back again. Established legends like Greazus and Sinistarr share the release with lesser known but inimitable forces like Kid Kun, Samurai Breaks, Sublimate co-founder Sonis, and Toronto's Captivate, who brought us today's premiere, "Shimmer".

A dancefloor-ready 170 bpm smasher dripping with vibes, "Shimmer" will be just as appropriate at peak rave hours in the club as it will be during a quiet early morning drive. Its versatility is what drew us to the tune; it expresses somber restraint while also being fun and emotional at the same time. We've had our eyes on Captivate for some time now, especially after his big collaboration "Cashme" with Stranjah on Aufect Recordings last year, and we couldn't be more excited to premiere his track "Shimmer" from the Sublimate x Noctilux compilation today. [PREMIERE] Captivate - Shimmer

We've been following Leeds-based producer Samurai Breaks for a few years now through his releases on some of our favorite uptempo imprints like Ground Mass Music, The Dreamers Recordings, Worst Behavior Recs, and most recently, Belgium's illustrious Halogen Music. His high-octane blend of jungle, juke/footwork, drum and bass, hip hop beats, and classic rave music is built club-ready, and if you've ever seen a warehouse going nuts to jungle at 3 o'clock in the morning, it was probably to music that sounds a lot like Samurai Breaks. Whatever's going on in that head, we're here for it, and we couldn't be more excited to premiere the latest single "Tommy 2Fast" from his new release "Anti-Social Club" forthcoming via Halogen Music next week. The latest installment in the Booms and Claps mix series comes to us from a British duo who we've had our eyes on for a few years now: the collaborative project of Will Marquiss & Mike Holliday AKA Mystic State. It's hard to put these two in a box, with influences ranging from drum and bass and jungle to hip-hop and R&B down to dubstep and garage, but with an impressive list of label affiliations including J:Kenzo's Artikal Music and uptempo titans like Flexout Audio and Halogen Music, their unique and clean production style clearly rings true whatever the genre. We first took notice of Mystic State several years back with their vibey footwork-adjacent beat "808 Gravediggin'" on the aforementioned Halogen Music, and since then, we've seen them release everything from meditative 140bpm stompers to chunky hip-hop beats that you would probably catch on Noisia Radio. Although both members hail from the Bristol area, they're now split internationally, with Will in Calgary, AB (We sure do love our neighbors to the North!) and Mike still in the UK, so expect to see more North American appearances from Mystic State soon! We're very excited to welcome them to the mix series, and without further ado, we're proud to present BnC Mix 045: Mystic State.

We are extremely excited to bring you the 46th installment of the mix series today, featuring the one and only Danny Corn of the Wake the Town crew. This mix follows two incredibly well received performances: early Saturday morning at Bass Coast last month, and opening for Om Unit in Portland this past weekend. We can safely say his sets are coveted everywhere he goes. In addition to his excellent taste as a DJ, Danny has also been in the studio working on some exciting new material with fellow Portlander, Chrome Wolves. Lucky for us, three tunes from this collaboration can be heard throughout the mix. Danny's refreshing take on bass music is always appreciated here at Booms and Claps, and this mix is a prime example of that. We hope you enjoy this as much as we do!

BnC Mix 046: Danny Corn

Booms and Claps favorite OAKK AKA Cole Edwards of Calgary, Canada has had a hell of a year. His production output was incredible, ranging from a host of Soundcloud singles to his debut EP on China's Unchained Records to his recent edit pack "Remixes & Edits Vol. 1." His tour appearances were nothing short of impressive, hitting legendary North American mainstays from Denver's Black Box Theatre to Canada's Shambhala Music Festival. He even topped it off with a well-received and swaggy Boiler Room appearance at Bass Coast Music Festival, alongside big names like Sam Binga, Kahn, and The Librarian.

To tie up an amazing 2019, today marks the self-release of his latest offering, the "Ellipsis EP". The release checks all the boxes we've come to expect from OAKK: R&B tinged head-nodders, wonky hip-hop beats, and even a dancefloor banger or two. In our opinion, this is definitely some of his best work yet and represents a culmination of the progress and growth OAKK has made over the past couple years as a producer. When I think of up and coming artists in the Pacific Northwest, two names instantly come to mind: Seattle-based producers Xakra and Klippee have both been making waves all across the bass music spectrum lately, with huge releases on Encrypted Audio and Lifestyle Music respectively, big shows from The Black Box in Denver all the way to the UK, and massive support on their tunes from the likes of Noisia, Hyroglifics, Khiva, and many more. While Chase Transeth AKA Klippee tends to find himself in the drum and bass and uptempo beat music domain, Xakra can be found in the swamps of 140 bpm and anything dubstep-adjacent, and the latter is where today's premiere lies. A clear nod to the classic wobble of pre-2010 Tempa and Deep Medi Records era dubstep with a modern twist, "Squad Car" is a shining example of why the 140 scene is alive and well in 2020. [PREMIERE] Xakra & Klippee - Squad Car (Sublimate Records)

If you haven't been paying attention to Alberta, CA's HomeSick, now is the time to shape up. For years, he's been consistently releasing some of the most unique productions across the spectrum of jungle, juke/footwork, bass music beats, DnB, and some other stuff that, to be quite honest, we're not really even sure what to call. He's a Red Bull Music Academy Alum, class of 2015 (they also notably referred to him as a "footwork savant"), he's toured all over the world, including a recent jaunt to China, and his tracks have garnered support from some of the best in the game, including folks like Om Unit and DJ Craze. 

Today's premiere comes in the form of HomeSick's most recent single entitled "Amplive", a growling hip hop beat that draws as much influence from the likes of heavier bass music artists like EPROM as it does from instrumental beatmakers like J Dilla, Madvillain, and Flying Lotus. We could see this easily landing on Alix Perez's 1985 Music just as easily as Brainfeeder Records. The intro is a building cacophony of analog bass synthesization that peaks in a "break your neck" type beat that would have even the most unwilling of listeners nodding their head along. The track ultimately develops into a lush soundscape of beautiful melody all while retaining the wonky syncopated drum pattern that defined the track in the first place. We're left feeling a deep sense of satisfaction after listening to this track, and we think you will too. Today's premiere comes to us from Toronto-based producer STRANJAH in the form of his new autonomic-tinged single "Technodub". With a laundry list of legendary label affiliates ranging from Metalheadz to Critical Records to Hospital and Renegade Hardware, Stranjah has been a staple of the drum and bass scene for over a decade. Over the past few years, he's explored more into DnB-adjacent territory and developed his own unique sound in the uptempo bass music realm with more hip-hop and halftime influence in his production. You'll find quite a lot of that influence in "Technodub", with a clear nod to the Exit Records camp and specifically folks like Skeptical and dBridge. Today's premiere comes to us in the form of the latest single from the release, "Natural Vibe," a collaboration with Booms and Claps favorites Anna Morgan and Rider Shafique. [PREMIERE] Anna Morgan, Kabuki, & Rider Shafique - Natural Vibe

Today's installment in the Booms and Claps Mix Series comes to us from Bristol-based uptempo bass music producer Hyroglifics, and while most would consider him first-and-foremost a drum and bass producer, he's not quite so easy to categorize. He exploded onto the scene six years ago with his freshman excursion, "BINARY Vol. 1" on the widely respected Critical Sound label. This release took the world of "DnB adjacent" music by storm with two absolutely gully halftime 170bpm bangers ("Killamanaman" and "Bay City Ballers Club) that quickly garnered support from legends like Om Unit, Ivy Lab, Sam Binga, and Alix Perez.

Ever since then, he's been tracing the lines between drum and bass, hip hop, jungle, trap beats, dub, footwork, and everything in between, and has explored beyond his home at Critical Sound to Flexout Audio, Perez's 1985 Music, and Fracture's Astrophonica, achieved Red Bull Music Academy alum status, created a new beat music alias Rippps (with a release on the legendary Alpha Pup Records to boot) and toured all over the world. Most recently, his collaborative EP, "BS6"with Detroit-bred Sinistarr (BnC Mix Series alum!) was released on Sherelle and Naina's new London-based label Hooversound, one of the most exciting fresh imprints of the year.

While he came up in the drum and bass scene, Hyroglifics is certainly no stranger to other tempos and sounds. Today's offering travels through slappinin' electro and breaks, dubstep and grime, and ends up in 160-170 bpm rave territory that touches on ghettotech, jungle, beats, and bass. His classic well-sought-after dubplate collaboration with Fixate, "Daft" even makes an appearance, an unreleased iconic track that first started making the rounds at least 5 years ago. The mix is a targeted expedition into the realm of high-octane bass music, at 115% the whole 30 minutes through. Strap up and lock in for a wild ride on BnC Mix 049: Hyroglifics.

If you've been following Booms and Claps for a while, you're certainly familiar with both Andre Lira AKA Doctor Jeep and China-based imprint Unchained Recordings at this point. Although Andre is undoubtedly known for his range and multi-tempo excursions, ranging UK funky to techno to dubstep and grime to more umptempo "halftime DnB" sounds, his releases that could be considered traditional drum & bass are rare in the grand scheme of his vast discography. That being said, you would never guess he's not a seasoned DnB veteran from the expert vision and production of his three-tracker entitled "Unreal EP," forthcoming on Unchained on Friday, April 10th, 2020.

Today's premiere comes in the form of "Angel VIP," a contemporary DnB revisit to his 2014 club-rattling 130bpm anthem "Angel." The original tune was released on the now defunct Trouble & Bass (RIP) and has been known for years as one of Doctor Jeep's standout productions. Cross-cultural connections are more valuable than gold in the music scene. Jungle and footwork are great on their own, but together? That's where the magic happens. R&B? Cool. Grime? Great. R&B/Grime fusion? Sign us UP. Rap? Yup. Rock? Yeah... Well, maybe we could have just skipped the 90's/2000's rap-rock era and the whole world would've been just fine, but you get my point.

LA-based (via NYC) Anna Morgan brings those cross-cultural connections to life through her work as a producer, DJ, label-head (shoutout Worst Behavior Recordings), promoter, and even fellow blog curator (The Footwork Jungle!!!). She draws on inspiration from all over the world, with a focus in high-energy and uptempo club music. Drum & bass, dancehall, electro, footwork, rap, afrobeat, ghettotech, dubstep, and wonky beat music all make appearances in the sphere of Anna Morgan's influence, whether it be a party she's throwing, a DJ mix she's piecing together, or a tune she's writing.

With today's offering, Anna uses our mix series as a canvas to blend all of those influences into an hour-long journey through her world of soundsystem culture and infectious energy. The work truly speaks for itself, so I'll leave it at that: we're proud to present BnC Mix 050: Anna Morgan.

Berlin-based imprint Through These Eyes has been a leading influence in the deeper sounds of 160-170 bpm for years now, across the spectrum of halftime, jungle, footwork, drum & bass, and beat music. Featuring releases from Booms and Claps favorites like Digid, TMSV, Folding City, and Sun People, most of their sought-after exclusive record releases sell out almost instantly, and their well-defined, subtle approach to bass music is imitated by many but duplicated by none. Their art direction is cohesive and consistent in a way that many labels struggle to achieve, which is all the more meaningful when the quality of the music is there to back it up.

Their next release is from up-and-coming German producer, Modul8. We haven't seen much from him in the past, but his sound is unique and his production is clean. Today's premier comes to us in the form of the soul-tinged footwork jungle tune "2L8" from the "Acceler8ed" EP, due to drop on May 15th, 2020. If you've been following the sounds of footwork, juke, and 160 bpm bass music for a while now, you're surely familiar with Spain-based producer duo BSN Posse. Although footwork obviously has its roots in Chicago, the BSN Posse boys have been influential in bringing that sound to a global audience, especially in Europe, while paying proper respect to the originators of the culture. Their own record label, Iberian Juke, has broken tons of new European 160 bpm artists, while their productions have found a home on legendary imprints such as Fracture's Astrophonica and Pixelord's Hyperboloid Records.

While footwork is known for its frenetic rhythmic patterns and high-energy beat structure, BSN Posse manages to work within that framework to create a sound that's much smoother, with roots in jazz and soul just as much as rap and jungle. That sound shines through in today's premiere, which comes to us in the form of "Magic Portal", a collaboration with Booms and Claps favorite, Calgary-based producer/DJ Metafloor. It's our favorite time of year! NYC/LA-based Worst Behavior Recs is back with their third annual compilation, "Worst Behavior, Vol. 3" and we couldn't be more excited. With the expert guidance of producer/DJ/promoter/label bosses Anna Morgan and Bell Curve steering the ship, we watched Worst Behavior come speeding out of the gate in 2018, and that momentum has shown no signs of slowing. With three compilations and several single releases under their belt, featuring BnC favorites like DJ Madd, Sinistarr, Samurai Breaks, A. Fruit, and many more, the label's output has been consistently high-caliber. When we think of uptempo bass music imprints in North America, especially in that sweetspot between footwork and jungle with a touch of rave and soundsystem culture, Worst Behavior is undoubtedly holding the torch.

Our premiere today from their third compilation offering comes from another BnC favorite: Leicester, UK's Jon1st. After originally gaining popularity for his phenomenal turntablism (see his 2013 Online DMC World Championship title or official routines for folks like Ivy Lab for credentials), Jon has been focusing more heavily on production the past several years, and it shows. His work with Copenhagen-based Shield has taken the global beat music scene by storm (if you have a chance to catch their live performance, don't miss it!) and his collaborations with folks like DJ CRAZE, EAN, and BSN Posse have been running the circuit in DJ sets and radio shows all over, too. However, today's offering comes in the form of the debut solo production from Jon1st, "Rose Point". A melodic double-time tune clocking in at 160 bpm with touches of amen breaks and footwork percussion that will be sure to get you moving in your seat, "Rose Point" was more than worth the wait for solo Jon1st material. Since forming in 2016, Minneapolis-based DJ/producer trio Ternion Sound has quickly become a household name in the underground dubstep scene, churning out 140 bpm dungeon anthems with alarming consistency. In just a few short years, they've stacked releases on legendary labels like Truth's Deep Dark and Dangerous, Alix Perez's 1985 Music, and J:Kenzo's Artikal Music, while traveling all over the world and performing at Outlook Festival in Croatia, the acclaimed Black Box club in Denver, and Infrasound Festival in Wisconsin. Their explosion onto the scene is no random occurrence, however, as the trio is made up of established producers Nostalgia, Johnny Foreplay, and Apparition, but it's safe to say that their collaborative power as a group has grown exponentially since forming.

Today's premiere comes to us via Hypho and Xakra's Manuka Records, in the form of "Spiral": a new exploration for Ternion Sound into the realm of 130 bpm, drawing on influences from breaks, techno, jungle, and of course, dubstep. The defining style of Ternion Sound shines through while embarking on a new journey, and the result is exciting, to say the least. Knowing how limiting the rhythmic rigidity of the 140 bpm scene can be, it's a breath of fresh air to see artists like Ternion Sound breaking ground in other tempos. "Spiral" is the latest single from their full EP release on Manuka, aptly entitled "Exploration", forthcoming next Tuesday, September 1st, 2020. [PREMIERE] Ternion Sound - Spiral (Manuka Records)

If you've been following Booms and Claps for a while, it should come as no surprise that we're big fans of the NYC/LA-based Anna Morgan/Bell Curve uptempo brainchild Worst Behavior Recs. The latest offering from the imprint comes in the form of an EP from Toronto's Stranjah entitled "Monk Fruit", and it's chalk-full of the top-notch production quality and high energy stompers that we've come to expect from one of our favorite Canadians. Stranjah is clearly no stranger (I'll see myself out) to working with vocalists, as the standout tunes on the EP are undoubtedly the vocal features from Baltimore's club queen TT the Artist and Manchester's finest Fox on "Major" and "Inya" respectively. We were especially excited to see the TT feature pop up, as she has had a HUGE year with a laundry list of big collaborations and single releases, the launch of her "Black Pop Art" painting/apparrel/home decor collection, as well as the premiere of her amazing full-length documentary film "Dark City: Beneath the Beat" highlighting the culture of Baltimore club music. She's an incredible vocalist, director, designer, and artist, and we're so excited every time we see her work intersect with the bass music we love.

As if that wasn't enough, the EP also features a remix from one of our OTHER favorite Canadians, the illustrious OAKK, which will be the subject of today's premiere. OAKK takes a stab at flipping the TT the Artist feature, "Major", and it's safe to say he succeeded. The infectious hook from TT, the booming 808s, the way the beat just hangs in the pocket with the vocal, and of course the "flute drop" combine forces to create a dance floor smasher. If there ends up being a festival season this next year, I can guarantee you'll hear this one all summer long. In the meantime, hopefully it'll just show up in a couple live streams!
