As an introduction to their forthcoming “Novox 10” anthology, Skyshaker shares their thoughts on the current state of ballroom alongside two members of the international community. With the blessing of fellow SVBKVLT stalwart Hyph11E, her cavernous “Escapism” track serves as the backdrop of a startling confrontation between three international members of the queer ballroom community.

Mexico’s Lenchanter Medussa infiltrates the next evolution of “Escapism” with a disembodied Spanish-language taunt that literally reaches critical mass. Skyshaker’s “Vemanei Transmission 072720” is a sobering moral reckoning with unspoken violence and power dynamics underneath the glamour and theatricality often associated with the young queer subculture. Tokyo’s Chris Eclipse closes the release with a classic New York chant with an African prince-inspired music video to match.

In Sky’s own words, “Ballroom is at yet another crossroads in which they have to decide how much to embrace the corporate America that now smells money on them. Not everyone is okay with the way they are being observed, not everyone is okay with that scent.”

Escapism Remixes

Hyph11E –Escapism (Skyshaker & Eclipse Lunar Edition)

'Wintermute' is a tribute to the Artificial Intelligence in William Gibson's masterpiece 'Neuromancer'. This being is half of a super-AI, far more intelligent than humans, and was therefore constrained in what it can do. Software barriers block its ability to make long term plans and maintain a stable identity. Its other half is Neuromancer, an AI capable of compiling personalities to pieces of code. Wintermute's main desire is to merge itself with Neuromancer, despite the shackles imposed on it.

This piece represents the union of both AI. Wintermute is characterised by an ambient introduction, where it shapeshifts between timbres where no clear structure exists. When it's freed and starts merging with Neuromancer, the organised being tries to resist the fusion, fearing losing its own personality constructed from all its years in isolation. Neuromancer is represented by a clear and predictable rhythm, which keeps struggling against the cold ambience of Wintermute. As the track progresses, both AIs learn how to live together, where ambience and rhythm give space to peaceful harmony.

This track was first released as a reward for the crowdfunding for F O C, a self-organised art centre in Barcelona, where the Jokkoo collective and other great art organizations have their headquarters. As this crowdfunding is over, I wanted to share with you all this track, now with a new mastering. The cover is done by Zizi Ramires, a super talented artist who also happens to be my sister. For me, the weight of the rock, sitting on top of a calm field strengthens the previously described relationship, now through a natural and organic representation.

Wintermute

With the latter half of 2013 being dominated by a flurry of activity from the newfangled Ultramajic imprint, Berlin based label founder and scene veteran Jimmy Edgar reflects on the growing discography by remixing 'Whip', a standout track from the burgeoning canon.

With the original cut having garnered early support from the likes of Boys Noize, Loco Dice and Scuba, Edgar flips the the dub sensibilities and Chicago style
vocal chops off the elusive Aden into a proper New Jersey house joint, teaming with exuberant keys and irrepressible bounce.

Set for release at the beginning of 2014, it prefaces EP's from the likes of Sophie (Numbers / Huntleys & Palmers) and Danny Daze (Hot Creations / Plant Music).

As per its penchant for cyberdelic enigmas, Jimmy Edgar’s Ultramajic outpost is building a core of secretive producers. After closing out 2014 with a record from unknown newcomer Crystal Bandito, the label will return in 2015 with an offering from semi-anonymous beatmaker Aden. The tracks on Tanz, which is the German word for "dance", are hewn from bouncing drums, vocal yelps, glittering keys, and a few functional white noise-infused breakdowns that pack a solid dose of energy and spirit. "Tanz 1 – Lieb" is a gentle intermission from the EP’s intense vitality, with warm and soft pads that lay the foundation for blunted percussion. From rigid pumpers to soothing textures, the Tanz EP contains a range of moods to fuel human bodies on the virtual dance floors of a digital future.

Chambray’s sophomore record is set to launch in mid-February via Jimmy Edgar’s Ultramajic outpost. Work That, the Berlin-based producer’s follow-up to the Rub EP, stays true to the label’s signature style of staccato functionality. Rigid beats, lightning claps, and catchy vocal blips abound throughout the four-track on the digital-only release, as do flashes of ghetto house’s dogged vocals and dusty hi-hats. Chambray strikes a balance between rigorous, inflexible workouts and jewel-bright melodic elements with dreamy synth breakdowns on the title track and a clipped piano part on "Anew.“
