Boxia - Outlier

In 2024, Dutch artist and producer Nadia Struiwigh founded Distorted Waves, a label devoted to releasing music untethered from the usual listening environments -not solely built for the club or the concert hall, but also for all spaces beyond.

Following her first two releases, OXI 5 and Trees, Struiwigh now curates Distorted Waves VA 01. It’s the label’s first various artists compilation and its most collaborative project to date.

A core part of the label’s identity is a deep focus on the technological aspects of music creation. Each release on Distorted Waves explores a specific piece of gear or a particular tool. For this project, that tool was one that Nadia created herself: a custom Sci Fi Ambient sample pack.
Nadia extended an invitation to a circle of 10 artists she’s connected with creatively and personally. Each was given the same starting point: a bespoke ambient sample pack crafted by Nadia. But instead of prescribing direction, the pack served as a catalyst for play -encouraging open-ended exploration without genre constraints.

What emerged is a wide-ranging collection of tracks that bends through power ambient, experimental contours, dubstep pressure, and more atmospheric oscillations. Each track was shaped from the same sonic source, yet arriving somewhere entirely distinct.

“These sounds traveled through many minds, many contexts,” says Nadia. “It’s a kind of group storytelling, one set of frequencies reshaped into many perspectives.”

Rather than chase coherence, Distorted Waves VA 01 leans into divergence unified by source. This is one for the heads.

We are delighted to welcome none other than Q-BRA (@qbra) to our DETECT mix series.
They have recorded an exclusive one hour mix for us, available to listen to now on our FOLD SoundCloud.

Music, just like any of culture’s facets, has a key thing at its heart: storytelling. Whether they come in the form of a song, a book, a speech, a dance or an opera, the greatest stories have long transcended languages and borders. They impart information, excite our imagination and spur on our creative thoughts. They challenge the status quo as well as ourselves.

Which is why for an artist like Q-BRA, curation is of the utmost importance; every track from the XSM Records co-founder is a necessary character, all playing a particular role in the effortlessly multi-layered narrative. 

The 90s are revisited in this delightful one hour mix from Q-BRA, with old-school Chicago house threading together more contemporary acid, electro and house. It’s this genre-fluid approach that has become Q-BRA’s trademark; for the moment a dance-floor’s storyline begins to wane, so does its audience’s attention and lasting power. And knowing how and when to change before this happens is the mark of a true storyteller. Short storylines connect their four different groups of genres, all wound together with gradual transitions and several surprises along the way. 

After nearly-25 years of performing throughout Istanbul's queer underground, they have deservedly become one of the most recognisable activists in the city. More recently they made the move to London, following it up with performances in the Barbican as well as appearing as a panellist on FOLD Talks.

DETECT [162] - Q-BRA

Stuttgart producer, sound engineer, DJ and label owner Andres Klein started his 4th artist alias in 2013 when he fell in love with Techno and House. After already having careers in other music genres with other aliases he named it Ackermann, knowing if he really wanted to make this one work as well he has to put in the work and grind (to 'acker' means working hard in german slang) hard for this alias for it to make sense. Fast forward to today, with a massive string of releases on labels like Uncage, Rekids, Hotflush or his own imprint Safe Space and his mastering and mixdown works as Studio Pflug he became a household name in house and techno and shows no signs of slowing down.

Ackermann [ I tried to showcase as much of my upcoming house productions as possible and embedded them in some of my alltime fave house tunes for this mix. ]
