He stood in the hallway with cigarette charm,
Said, “Your silence is sharper than lace.”
I smiled like I meant it —
Too high up to feel
How much I wanted the praise.

He didn’t ask.
He didn’t reach.
He just waited
For me to speak.

So I sang for him —
A little too loud.
Gave him the melody
I swore I’d never share out loud.
He watched it fall,
Piece by piece.
Then left me holding
What he didn’t need.

He leaned like a fox against the frame,
All buttons and teeth and velvet timing.
He said I was “haunting,”
And I forgot
That charm is never binding.

He never touched the note I held —
But he made me

So I sang for him —
A little off key.
Handed him something
That once belonged to me.
He bowed,
Smiled,
Said nothing at all —
And left before the second call.

They say don’t trust the clever ones
