A couple of months ago, we picked out our <a href="http://www.stampthewax.com/2013/08/05/top-five-fela-kuti-reworks/" target="_blank">Top Five Fela Kuti Reworks</a> to mark the 16th anniversary of his death. The overwhelming response was confirmation of the feeling that had compelled us to write the feature; that Fela's musical legacy still resonates strongly today. Another testament of this is Red, Hot & Fela, a new compilation marking the 75th anniversary of Fela's birth, containing 13 interpretations by ?uestlove, tUnE-yArDs, Spoek Mathambo, Nneka, Tony Allen and Chance The Rapper. Our standout, however, was an interpretation of 'Sorrow, Tears & Blood' by a selection of names who were initially a little less familiar: Grammy award-winning string ensemble Kronos Quartet and TV On The Radio's Kyp Malone and Tunde Adebimpe.

An exclusive premiere ahead of tomorrow's release from Swedish beat-maker Olof Melander - @rymdstationen - called 'Inner Worlds'. The 14-track LP moves between elements of free jazz, electronica, hip hop, ritual drumming and dark noises to create a soundscape like no other.

The Natural Curve is a UK-based project from Norwich producer Paul Cullen. The track features delectable vocals from BBC Jazz nominated soul-stress Polly Gibbons and Serbian bass guitar guru Istvan Madjaric; fusing ambient rhodes chords with a funky bassline and sultry words scattered on top.

Ensemble Entendu is the collaborative project of Astro Nautico co-founder and co-owner Sam O.B. (f.k.a. Obey City) and label artist Photay. 

Since July 2014, inspired by back-to-back deejay sets at Astro Nautico parties and around New York, O.B. and Photay have been linking their individual production styles between Brooklyn studios in order to create a form dance music that centralizes the timeless power of the drum. 

With a track entitled ‘Cause ‘N’ Effect,’ the oldest (c. 2014) collected on the Ensemble’s debut release Selected Rhythm Works, Vol. 1, the duo raises the question: who in this collaboration is causing what effect on whom? There are rhythmic and melodic idiosyncrasies of both artists present on each track. Footprints stepping in footprints. And beyond or behind the artists are the sound signatures of house music, new jack, African polyrhythm, dub reggae, ‘80s prog (roto toms!), P-funk, dancehall, and much more. This flurry of styles stitches a Trans-Atlantic tapestry of drumming across generations and seas, with a center nowhere but the dance floor. 

Ensemble Entendu’s debut is sampling notions of library music and rhythm tracks. The duo’s name refers to deju entendu, the psychic phenomenon that occurs when you hear something you think you’ve heard before, even though the sound may be being heard for the first time. Selected Rhythm Works, Vol. 1 (a nominal reference to Aphex Twin) loosens the threads of connection between then and now and tomorrow, allowing listeners to weave their own journeys in historical time through body movement.

On October 4th 2019, Penguin Cafe released 'Handfuls of Night', the highly anticipated follow-up to their much applauded 2017 album 'The Imperfect Sea' 

Using gut-stringed violins, viola, cello, bass, percussion, upright and grand pianos, synthesiser, harmonium and more, Arthur Jeffes and his cohorts have crafted a vivid series of panoramic sonic landscapes, that are as rich in cerebral poignancy as they are in emotional depth.

Bookended by the atmospheric ambient piano pieces ‘Winter Sun’ and ‘Midnight Sun’, the album traverses glacial minimalism with ease, combining their signature contemporary classical panoramas, such as the melancholic yet upbeat lead track ‘At the Top of the Hill, They Stood...’ and the colossal cinematic piece ‘Chapter’, with the crystalline folktronica on ‘Pythagorus on the Line Again’ — a re-visiting and continuation of the Penguin Cafe Orchestra’s 1993 Union Cafe song on the principles of harmonics.

'Handfuls of Night' began life after Greenpeace commissioned Jeffes to write four pieces of music corresponding to four breeds of penguins, to help raise awareness for the endangered Antarctic seas . A fundraising evening at EartH in Hackney followed, where Penguin Cafe premiered the four songs named after their feathered counterparts to a sold out audience; the rousing contemporary folk inflected ‘Chinstrap’, the mournful and minimalistic ‘Adelie’, stoic and rhythmic ‘The Life of an Emperor’ and the wistful, string-laden ‘Gentoo Origin’.

Penguin Cafe - Midnight Sun

Synth wizard James Holden teams up with Polish clarinet guru Waclaw Zimpel for a four track EP of deliciously krauty improvisations, recorded over four days back in the summer of 2018.

Finding himself at a loose end in London in between UK live shows, Zimpel (and on 'Tuesday' and 'Wednesday' his longtime collaborator guitarist Jakub Ziolek) decided to put the downtime to good use, joining Holden in his London studio for a series of musical experiments, with the goal of completing one track per day.

An in-the-moment lyrical conversation between alto clarinet and modular synth, judiciously supplemented by guitar, organ, voice and assorted percussion glued together as atmospheric tapey overdubs, 'Long Weekend' is a meeting of two like-minded masters of their instrument, whose  disparate musical journeys now converge in a shared love of all things hypnotic and trancey.

After his last release on Dirt Crew in 2017, the label are delighted to bring back the talented Harry Wolfman.  With impressive records on Phonica, Omena, Outplay and Toy Tonics, he delivers a fine new selection that spans different genres and moods.  It’s the first release for Dirt Crew Recordings in 2020 after a couple months break.  The label continues to take brave steps and explore the more eclectic side of things, like their previous releases with  Dampé, S3A and Dan Only. 
 
Harry presents an exciting opener which features the vocal of Christian Crow. It’s a blissful and breaks laden, poppy, feel good feel tune “A Way You Come Home to Me”, that shines a bright light on these winter days.

Followed up by deeper club cut “Step by Step”, which builds around another vocal recording. This time it’s Harry Wolfman sampling his own voice and looping it into a repetitive piece of feel-good House music.
 
The B side goes deeper with “Speaking Raman”, a signature Wolfman tune, that’s playful dusty and lo-fi, built around a piano theme and embedded in deep bass and driving beats.  His trademark sound is present on these more floor orientated tracks on the EP.
 
Closing out are two cinematic, ambient electronic cuts that show the full range of Harry Wolfman’s talents. The haunting “Always 3” is a deep sphere that draws you into a meditational and soothing chamber of sounds.  Ending with the electroid “Green Trees”,  it’s broken and fragile and gives this indie-electronic track a warm and gentle touch

A go-to label for the connoisseurs Rhythm Section INTL is a UK staple. The raison d’être has always been to unearth and nurture new talent, not just via the catalogue but through the now established network of radio shows, concerts and club nights Rhythm Section has become known for. The SHOUTS compilation and accompanying celebratory tour is a continuation of this mission.

Today we premiere Dawit's contribution to the compilation, "Level 7".

Making his name as part of the DC Based 1432-R crew, Dawit is an Ethiopian-American DJ and producer based in Abidjan, Ivory Coast. Dawit joined Bradley for a number of dates last summer including Worldwide festival & Glastonbury and has previously released on Future Times in collaboration with Max D ( Dawit & Dolo) and as part of “Lifted” - a live studio project released on Bill Kouligas’ PAN Recordings.In “ Level 7” , his first solo effort for Rhythm Section INTL, we see Dawit switch to Peak Dance-floor ‘Hands in the air’ mode. With his own signature percussive wizardry, Dawit takes the Mr Fingers formula of airy pads and 303’s and drenches it in psychedelics, tweaking and freaking the parameters for maximum effect. This is Acid house for 2020.

In the last summer months of recording the album, I spent a couple weeks with a phone that wouldn’t charge properly. I later identified my charger as the problem. Anyway, being cut off from the constant stream of information we now call reality, allowed for this song to emerge. Circular themes in my life became more apparent, as they do every now and again, in cyclical patterns. The trick is to notice them, which I probably wouldn’t have if my phone was working all summer. Jae and Sarah killed the background vocals.
