One 2Gether

Back behind the drums and swinging harder than ever, with his new titanium hip crowdfunded by the immense generosity of friends and fans, brazilian drumming legend and one third of Azymuth Ivan ‘Mamão’ Conti releases a brand new solo album next year with Far Out Recordings. It’s his first solo release in over twenty years and the first to come out on vinyl since his 1984 Milestone classic The Human Factor. As people of earth may not quite be ready for the explosive cosmic samba of Mamão’s new album just yet, we’re easing into it with a double header of heavily percussive, future-centric, jazz-minded, yet club-ready remixes. 

Following on from the IG Culture meets 22a remix EP released earlier this year, the second remix 12” ahead of Mamão’’s album release, hosts three producers united not only by a foundational appreciation for the work of Ivan Conti and Azymuth, but also in the belief that there’s much more to dance music than straight four to the floor. These are two of Germany’s most consistently on-fire producers: Money Sex Records buddies Max Graef and Glenn Astro, along with the ascendant Mancunian producer/percussionist Contours. With Mamão’s famously jovial character shining through each remix, the EP spans hip-hop, deep house, jazz-funk and afro-brasilian rhythms, giving the listener a taste of what’s to come from Mamão’s much anticipated new album in 2018.

When The Expansions self released their first single in 2013, the laid-back jazz funk of Lavender, it quickly gained strong support from soul and rare-groove aficionados including Kenny Dope, Dom Servini, Patrick Forge and Andy Smith. A run of shows followed and before long, when someone was asking if there was a soul-jazz band around to play with, “The Expansions” was the answer. 

Although this popularity meant a hiatus in releasing music, the band have been constantly busy, playing around Europe with legendary British-Ghanaian soul singer, Andrew Ashong and the exceptional, upcoming talent Connie Constance. 

Murmuration, recorded over three days at Big Noise in Southend, is constructed of single takes, with minimal overdubs, as the band attempt to capture the feeling and energy they create live. 

Debut single Breakthrough introduced the insanely catchy but deeply soulful blend of synths and groove, but here on the album that is explored to the fullest with longer breakdowns and more expansive, experimental solos. Pocket 5 displays the, possibly unexpected, influences of broken beat and almost combative rhythm playing – particularly in the complex guitar and keys breakdown where Koor and O’Keefe layer conflicting time signatures and battle to ride it out to the heavy drum return. 

Cannonball brings warm mellowness that delicately evolves through beats, touching on bossas alongside their fundamental hip-hop sensibilities. But even here there is a raucous zenith before the band sublimely recede into the silence of the a-side ending. 

Colossal album highlight Ivory Mountain is truly an epic. Evoking moments of 4Hero, there is a lightness of groove in the first half of this soulful exploration. But at the halfway point, all restraint is let go as a live string section joins the four quarters of the band for three glorious minutes of soulful disco. Evoking sounds of Quincy Jones, George Benson and Johnny Hammond, all the way through to a beautifully cacophonous finale. 

Dragonfly undoubtedly reflects on the work of Herbie Hancock and is the most direct throwback to the band’s earlier work, which is a welcome marker of how far they have come. A quintessential jazz funker. 

The album closes with the thoughtful and introverted shuffle of Miles Away. In the final eight minutes of Murmuration, The Expansions allow space and time to take precedence, with once-more-restrained peaks and developments. It becomes clear though, that the band cannot resist one last explosive finale, as they rise with screeching synths, strings and dubs for a perfect race to the finish line. 

You can hear the influences of Idris Muhammad, Grover Washington, even parallels with South London peers Yussef Kamaal and Ruby Rushton. But The Expansions have tirelessly worked to create a sound of their own and are very proud, along with label Albert’s Favourites, to finally share it.

Men I Trust - Show Me How

Melbourne’s jazz and soul scene has drawn some well-deserved international attention recently, so we’re happy to fan this worthy musical flame by premiering an upcoming digital single and the fourth release of Melburnian label, La Sape. Brisbane’s James Wright Trio has prepared a 12” EP for the label, so, as a warm-up of sorts for that release, La Sape headhunted rising Melbourne musician Horatio Luna to remix some 2017 demos of James Wright Trio’s track, Pieces.

And those with a special affinity with jazz-house blends could do themselves a big favor by sifting through Horatio Luna’s nascent but promising discography. He’s the bassist of jazz-heavyweights, 30/70 (whose music we’ve premiered before), and has, apparently, been honing his production skills.

So it’s no surprise this seven-minute remix exudes musical dynamism. It morphs from an archetypal jazz loop of splashy cymbals and a stuttered chord progression of moody keys to frantic drums and flurried keys of a much lighter, dreamier kind. Yet it all sounds like one, cohesive piece of music. The continual threads throughout the track are the live-recorded drum samples (courtesy of drummer and bandleader, James Wright) and Danika Smith’s captivating, echoed vocals that loop over and over again to blanket the song with an alluring and almost psychedelic veneer.

This song is like a makeshift raft: it’s a little bit rough, made of parts that fit surprisingly well together, and will probably make you float for a few minutes.

As a sidekick to our Times and Tunes interview with K15 planned next week, the founder and keys player of jazz quintet, Culross Close, we’re thrilled to premiere the eponymous track of the band’s LP, Forgotten Ones.

Only Esencia’s third release, this one is due out next week on March 15, and we strongly recommend putting aside 30minutes to do nothing but listen to the full six tracks in succession, because this album is a bonafide manifestation of top class musicianship. It’s an album of two distinct halves: the first is deep, melancholic, brooding and beautiful, while the second is lively and up-beat. A half for thinking and a half for dancing.

Ambient-jazz is how one could feasibly describe the opener, Fractured. Three minutes of swirling textures move around the listener’s head, coming close then moving away until seamlessly sliding into our premiere, Forgotten Ones. Our favourite on the record, this track shows off Culross Close’s top-class instrumentation. They all come together – the drums, the bass, the keys, the vocals – as tight and synergetic as you’re likely to find after digging for an hour for today’s best and freshest jazz. Acceptance is similar, but happier to put K15’s keys in the spotlight for much of it.

And the contrast really is striking when track four, Mood, begins. The LP’s chaotic outlier, just over a minute of dissonant strings and frantic drums will wake you back up if you, understandably, slipped deep into daydream during the album’s first half. Then, some convention is restored: it’s by no means textbook stuff with The Tiniest Lights Still Shine’s 5/4 rhythms or the rogue synthesiser of the closing track, Healing, but it’s clear that the album’s close could lure listeners of various tastes to a dancefloor.
