Linkin Park’s In Pieces was the 11th track on their third album ‘Minutes to Midnight’.  It was never released as single, but still became one of the bands most popular recordings.  As with many of their songs, the lyrics were written by front man Chester Bennington with the collaboration of the band on the music.  

‘Minutes to Midnight’ was released in 2007.  It had taken some time to come to fruition as the band had started work on this third album back in 2003.  When it was released the album debuted at number one in the US Billboard 200 and in 15 other countries.  It went double platinum in the UK, New Zealand, Italy and Australia, but fourfold platinum in the US.  Whilst commercially successful, it received a mixed bag of reviews from the critics, but that hasn’t stopped it selling more than 20 million copies worldwide.

In an interview Chester Bennington explained how the lyrics for In Pieces had come about, based on his own then life experience.  Chester had been through divorce and re-marriage, and he felt he couldn’t be completely happy with his new life whilst he was still caught up in the old one. 

Chester’s interest in music began at a young age and he cited his influences as being Depeche Mode and Stone Temple Pilots; it was his dream to become a member of the latter, a dream that came true when he took over as  their lead singer in 2013.  Chester gave up that role in 2015 due to his commitments with Linkin Park.

Sadly in 2017, 10 years after Linkin Park releasing ‘Minutes to Midnight’ which included the track In Pieces,  Chester took his own life. Chester had a difficult childhood and struggled with drug and alcohol abuse.  It is difficult to imagine that this was not linked to his mental health, as drugs and alcohol are often used as a form of self-medication for those suffering from depression, anxiety and other forms of mental illness.  

My hope is that by re-imagining great songs from artists who lost their lives too soon though mental illness, drug or alcohol abuse it will spark a conversation that will remove the stigma that still surrounds Mental Health.  If you like what I am doing, please comment below.

Soundgarden’s Black Hole Sun was written by lead singer, Chris Cornell, and was released as a single in 1994, from their fourth album Super unknown. It is the third release in my Mental Health 'Break The Stigma' project featuring original covers from well-known musicians whose lives were lost due to mental illness. The single is the band’s most well-known track and reached the top 10 in Australia,Canada, France and Ireland as well as sitting at number one on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Tracks chart for seven weeks.

Chris Cornell was one of the founding members of Soundgarden back in 1984 together with lead guitarist Kim Thayil. The two were the only members to survive every reincarnation of the band throughout the 1980s and 1990s. Influential in the creation of Grunge, they were the first grunge band to be signed to a major record label in 1989. Success did not come immediately however, and it was not until other grunge bands, such as Alice in Chains and Nivarna popularised the genre in the early 1990s that they had their first commercial success.

Black Hole Sun was included on the bands ‘Greatest Hits’ album in 1997. With its surreal lyrics, and equally surreal video, Chris Cornell was often asked about its meaning and origin. He claimed that the song was sparked by something he misheard on the radio when driving home one day and wrote the song in about 15 minutes. It went on to become the most popular song of the summer of 1994 and is without doubt the bands most popular song.

The band dissolved in 1997, but in 2010 Chris Cornell and Kim Thayil reformed the band together with Matt Cameron and Ben Shepherd. During the period Soundgarden was disbanded, Cornell joined the band Audioslave, and had equal success as their lead singer, although his poor mental health, drug and alcohol problems continued to affect his life. Chris also performed as a solo artist and collaborated with many others in the industry.

Chris suffered with depression from the time he was a young teenager and that unfortunately led to drug and alcohol abuse. He once described his mother as having ‘saved his life’ when she bought him some snare drums that led to his career in music. Chris explained that he was able to deal with
his anxiety through rock music. His musical influences were originally The Beatles and Little Richard.

Sadly, Chris Cornell took his own life in May 2017 at the age of 52. In 2020, Cornell's eldest daughter launched a series of interviews on Instagram to honour her father. The series is titled ‘Mind Wide Open’, designed to help break the stigma and stimulate conversations around mental health.

Chris and Soundgarden will forever be remembered for Black Hole Sun – the song of the summer of ‘94.

The Doors were a successful American rock band and released Riders on the Storm in June 1971. Their lead singer was Jim Morrison who died in slightly mysterious circumstances a few weeks later at the age of just 27. Originally released as part of their album L.A. Woman in April that year, the track was the second single to come from the album.

Morrison was a songwriter and poet as well as an iconic guitarist. He wrote the lyrics to Riders on the Storm which were supposedly inspired by the country song ‘Ghost Riders in the Sky’; it is also suggested that some of the lyrics were inspired by the spree killer Billy Cook who had killed 6 people in California.

Jim Morrison was noted for his erratic behaviours and wild, often self-destructive personality. He recounted a story of seeing a truck accident as a child where native American Indians were lying dead all over the road and cited this as having a profound impact on his life. If true, it is possible that this incident could have triggered Jim’s mental health problems, coupled with the difficult relationships he had with his family – which at one time he claimed were dead. He was thought of as a ‘rebel’ by his father who, after hearing him singing on The Doors self-titled album wrote to him saying "to give up any idea of singing or any connection with a music group because of what I consider to be a complete lack of talent in this direction.”

There is no doubt that Jim Morrison had a troubled life and suffered with depression and other mental health conditions. He became involved with drugs, which are thought to be at the root of his death, although his death certificate says he died of heart failure. No autopsy was carried out as Jim died in France where, at the time, it was not required by French Law. There are various contradictory accounts of what happened on that fateful night and Jim’s death still remain shrouded in controversy.

As the lead singer with The Doors, Jim Morison was regarded by critics and fans as one of the most influential frontmen in rock music history. He has remained famous decades after his death as one of popular cultures icons, representing youth counterculture. He was the prototypical rock star with his sexy, sultry looks and scandalous lifestyle; the leather trousers he used to wear became must-have rock star apparel.

Despite his nomadic upbringing and clear problems with mental health, alcohol and drugs, Jim was an intelligent thinker and clearly talented. Riders on the Storm, which was one of the last songs he ever recorded, lent its name to a book written by the Doors drummer, which was about his time with the band. The song was inducted, in November 2009, to the Grammy Hall of Fame.
