Just A Breeze

There was a time I thought my little songs could actually "change the world"; that perhaps music could make us all more kind, compassionate, tolerant, empathic, less violent, less greedy, or at a minimum, happier. 

I have always hoped we could navigate our differences with words rather than weapons and that humanity could as a whole, truly practice reverence for the planet and all the living creatures who share it with us. 

But, I see now how absolutely naive I was. The despair, suffering, destruction, and apathy that continues now, many years after I wrote this song, has not changed. Some things, are better but many things, are not; however, I remain hopeful that humanity will eventually work things out and I, in any way that I can, will keep trying to make things better. And so I decided, I would finish producing this song and include it in my first album; an album which on many days might be the continuation of a journey, or on other days, could be the end of a journey.

I Blamed You

Hey…. Thanks for dropping by. April 21st, fresh snow on the ground that hopefully will melt off by the end of the day. Yesterday, I was out transplanting some small Lupine and Columbine plants from out of the lawn. They grew there from seed that spilt from nearby flowerbeds. I put them into a rock garden I recently refurbished. I pulled all the rocks out, dug down to get all the invasive grass roots out, and rebuilt it with a few extra rocks. After that chore, I dug up several Spruce seedlings from the Spruce trees I planted here decades ago. Those little saplings grew up under a lilac bush, so I moved them out into open areas in the backyard. They probably won’t get to be 3 feet tall by the time I pass from this mortal coil, as I am old, but I plant them anyway b/c they’ll most likely still be here when I am gone. Ha. I have been transplanting a lot of volunteer flower plants into my neighbor’s yard, from my vegetable garden in preparation for Spring planting. They find their way into the garden, by wind, bird or however, and I just let them grow, but soon there’s more flowers than vegetables, so I find them new homes. Lastly, I replaced the wonky wheel and axle assembly on my old wheelbarrow, held together by hose clamps, during a snowy day last week, with a wheel from a wheelbarrow I recently got from a pile of free stuff (junk) out on the road, that a neighbor was tossing out. The barrow was cracked, but the wheel/axle were fine. Now I am ready to roll. That is how Spring is here in the mountains…. So several years back, there was quite a large pack of dogs that would freely run around our rural neighborhood. They lived here and loved being able to roam. When I first saw them on my way to the mailbox, they did not know me, and several dogs growled at me. (Rightly so.) Ha. It was a standoff moment for sure. So I just laughed at them. They were not anticipating that. So from then on, we’d have some fun whenever I saw them. Most of those dogs have died over the years. It was sad to see them go. So I included them in this song. I was listening back to my band from back in the 90s This Elegant Chaos and thinking this needs to be heard again. 
This was a band that formed quickly from other bands we had all been in previously.
With 90s Britpop/ Indie Alternative Rock still very relevant. I thought these tracks need a fresh outing. 
I would consider this band to be some of my best work to date. 
So I’ve decided to release a track every time I have a space in between current releases. 
This track Dreaming Of Johnny is about a dream I had about meeting John Lennon after he faked his own death to be free from media/ music industry pressure. He was living in Walsall on Sea in the West Midlands in a flat. 
Yes I know it doesn’t make any sense but it’s a dream. Tells the story of meeting him and explaining why he faked his death. 
The band were formed  in 1997 by Simon Bayliss and myself .
Simon a bassist and me a vocalist we had a handful of songs that needed a band of seasoned musicians to bring them alive. I recruited former band members of previous projects Lee Hughes & Rob Adams (guitarists) and Dave Robins (drums). 
Within months the band were recording and playing live with several labels showing an interest. 
Our first deal was with Holier than Thou Records but we left without releasing anything due to financial reasons. 
Our first release was a  7 Track 
EP “Hello Thane” on Quicksilver Records, quickly followed by our  debut album Virtue Circle released on Underground label Music & Elsewhere, which became a best seller for the  label. 
The album was then remastered and re-released back on Quicksilver Records in cd format, re-intitled “Virtue Circle Revisted”, M&E dealing with distribution.
Probably the best work to date was the final album Magino Line also released on Quicksilver Records. Unfortunately Simon had to leave before the second album due to work commitments with Artist Naomi of Gut Records. This lead to ‘Sarge’ Mark Sargent taking over bass duties. 
This Elegant Chaos bowed out in 2001 after the previous years sell out gig at Ronnie Scott’s. It was a wonderful time to be in a band with such talented musicians. 
Early 2020 we were released again on Music & Elsewhere to celebrate the labels 30th anniversary. This was a collection of the labels favourite songs in a download format.

I have been hearing so much AI music lately on SoundCloud and these  thoughts have been percolating with me for a while and finally they coalesced into a song. (created without the use of AI).

Now you’re posting two or three songs a day and hoping for a bunch of cheers
You’re rolling the musical dice, hoping you’ll come up with a catchy viral hit 
But there’s so much music flooding the internet that no one gives a shit
You tell yourself you’re a great artist because prompting takes a lot of skill
But deep down you know the AI did most of the work and you swallow the bitter pill
People complement you on your guitar playing and they tell you your voice sounds great, it makes you feel so good but you don’t ever set them straight
Some people believe we’re living in simulation and none of this is real
We’re just digital creations in a computer with the ability to feel
But even if that’s not the case, we’re quickly, heading to a place where no one’s going to be able to tell the difference.
You used strum your guitar, trying to capture lightning in a bottle and the songs that emerged came from you.
And now the songs you write with AI, what they’re saying, you don’t have a clue.
Music used to feel therapeutic, it was a window on your soul that you could share.
But now something feels missing because your songs no longer lay your heart bare.

Prompting Takes A Lot Of Skill

So nice that my longtime collaborator friend @dough-factory has returned to SoundCloud after a break of a couple years! This is our first track working together since then and it came together in a really cool way. I was inspired by Ryan's electronic drums and bass to lay down some rhythm guitar as well as a few synth leads. Then he came up with some awesome lyrics/vocals that I think captures the vibe of this piece quite well.

Keep an eye out for more from us, we are thinking of pulling together a whole album or EP over the coming months.

Hello - Thank you so very much for visiting my soundcloud page and for all of the love (likes, comments, plays, messages etc). I am deeply grateful and humbled.

I write, produce, play piano/keys, sing, and am currently in rehearsal mode so I can perform live. 

I love it all: the recording, the playing live, the listening, writing out charts by hand with my favorite pencils, practicing, recording, listening to the greats, and constantly searching my soul for my truth in music.  I don't use or plan to use AI for anything; if I get left behind, so be it!
