This is a windlass shanty (Text from "Songs of the American Sailormen" (1924) by Joanna C. Colcord).

The tune is attributed to Liam Milner in the collection "A Bonnie Bunch Of Roses" (1983)
by Dan Milner and Paul Kaplan.

It's a fine example of a work song exposing a bit of social history.

William Tapscott and his brother James were brokers for at least two packet ship companies
and would arrange passage across the Atlantic Ocean from Liverpool to New York.
 
Regrettably, their advertising was often fraudulent and overstated the quality and size of the ships. The poor emigrants were well and truly ripped off. On board the ships, 
the food and accommodation were inferior.

"Clarence Dock" in Liverpool opened in 1830. It received many ferry passengers from Ireland 
during the Potato Famine, when Liverpool Atlantic packet ship sailings were more frequent 
than those from Ireland.

"Waterloo Dock" opened in 1834. It was the major exit point from England for the NY-bound. 

"Castle Garden", in the last verse, refers to Castle Clinton in lower Manhattan (The Battery),
which was the forerunner (until 1892) of Ellis Island for receiving new immigrants to the
United States.

Time Waster

I wrote a song called "Rapture" and the The Beating Edge Recorded a fantastic rocking version that I just love https://soundcloud.com/beatingedge/rapture?si=25980ccbeac641d88908cd1945d69048&utm_source=clipboard&utm_medium=text&utm_campaign=social_sharing but I decided to go down a rabbit hole and attempt to record a more acoustic version of the song.  I first played the song with just my acoustic guitar and I recorded it on my iPhone 16 pro.  I then used a stem splitter to separate the guitar from the vocals and then I used the iPhone recorded guitar as the centerpiece for the song.

Organ: playing my midi keyboard with logic pro Bebop organ sound
Bass: Playing my midi keyboard with native instruments Rickenbacker bass sound.
Vocals and back up vocals: recorded using a Rhode NT1 5th generation mic.

I've been hearing so much AI music on SoundCloud lately that instead of jumping on the AI bandwagon, it's pushing me in the other direction where I want to do more songs with just me and my guitar.  
This is a live version that I played straight through from start to finish which I am using as an audition song for the Tucson Folk Festival.

Lukewarm King (Acoustic Live Version)

A jazz ballad written for my wife, who once had a waking vision of a dragonfly emerging from a serpent's mouth.  I wrote her a poem about that vision when our relationship was new.  Years later, I'm revisiting that vision in this song to imagine us visiting the dragonflies in a "secret place."

I try to write songs in a wide range of styles, including r&b, funk rock, folk, jazz, soul, alt-country, and classic rock.
