You're Doomed. Be Nice. is Rob Crow's first album since his heavily-publicized withdrawal from music – specifically the toxic byproducts of  the lifestyle of a touring professional musician attempting to survive in an industry of diminishing returns. Rather than perform, record, and mix every note himself – a trademark of his previous solo endeavors – Crow formed Gloomy Place, a band made up of close friends that includes another member of the beloved Heavy Vegetable. Recorded and mixed by Ben Moore (Hot Snakes), You're Doomed presents a fascinating dichotomy: dynamic, eclectic prog-pop backing alarmingly confessional, often acerbic lyrical themes. This juxtaposition makes for an album of confrontational yet accessible songs filled with wry wit and emotional depth.

Whereas Crow's previous solo endeavors acted primarily as low-key stop-gaps between Pinback albums, the stakes are markedly higher here – and it shows in both the depth of songwriting and impressively labyrinthine performances. Gone are the 60-second blink-and-you-missed-them acoustic sketches that became a staple of Crow's solo albums; You're Doomed is filled with the kind of thoughtful attention to detail and craft that was a hallmark of Pinback's legendary catalog.

You're Doomed. Be Nice. is the diamond carved out of a particularly rough chunk of Rob Crow's life – one that's either the first gem of an inspired second act, or the culmination of an undeniably influential career. In either case, the quality of its cut will last a lifetime.

These songs were written between Oct 2015 and April 2016, and the majority of them were clustered in the span of a very fertile two-month period: the change-over from fall to winter. Every now and then something happens that just kick-starts your motor, and it feels absolutely invigorating - especially after you've gone through a fallow period of creativity. Sometimes the timing *is* right, so you have to be ready. I'm really happy with this body of work - it covers a lot of territory. Whether you like fuzzy, heavy riffs or quiet, gentle chords or something weirdly in-between, I think you'll find it here. On the face of things, these songs could seem detached from each other in style, but they are intimately woven together by subject, thought, and theme. They share a time and place for me, and hopefully you find a connection with them.

This is the first album I'm sharing where I've done all the heavy lifting. I recorded all the songs early this fall in a couple of weeks, with a few more weeks spent listening over to every wrong note and weird mouth-noise to a point of annoyed exhaustion. I fixed some things. I re-played a few parts. I learned a lot. I won't claim it's a masterpiece, but it's about as perfect as I could get it to the best of what abilities I have. I hope you enjoy listening.

I challenged myself to change the structure of this song by testing my limits with composition. I've been listening to Low's 'Double Negative' a lot, and the influence is pretty noticeable to me. There was more removing and re-arranging, and a lot of experimenting with reverse delay on both guitar & vocal tracks. It was fun, and it came out more interesting to me than I think it would have otherwise, if I'd just recorded it more "traditionally."
