Oli at Radio TFSC asked us to take part in Couchella 2023 by submitting a couple of acoustic tracks, so rather quickly (for us) we jumped into "the studio" and threw together the five tracks you now see on this EP. We even managed to coordinate with our friend Alison Johnson who sang Her Crime for us, so she repeated her incredible performance, and then lent her vocal and percussion skills to the rest of the songs too.

We haven't put a whole lot of effort into this release to be honest, but we thought the quality was good enough that we could use it as a release. However, we've not set the price very high so please don't feel compelled to pay over the odds for it. Same as always, we just hope you enjoy it.

Ouwle accidentally opened up a project just as we were done working on another track, and I heard this lovely melody. I just said, "Let's make track of this," and Star Cry was born out of a nebula anomalie, and it was young and fearless.

The sound chip, named Paula, supports four PCM-sample-based sound channels (two for the left speaker and two for the right) with 8-bit resolution for each channel and a 6-bit volume control per channel. The analog output is connected to a low-pass filter, which filters out high-frequency aliases when the Amiga is using a lower sampling rate (see Nyquist frequency). The brightness of the Amiga's power LED is used to indicate the status of the Amiga's low-pass filter. The filter is active when the LED is at normal brightness, and deactivated when dimmed (or off on older A500 Amigas). On Amiga 1000 (and first Amiga 500 and Amiga 2000 model), the power LED had no relation to the filter's status, and a wire needed to be manually soldered between pins on the sound chip to disable the filter. Paula can read directly from the system's RAM, using direct memory access (DMA), making sound playback without CPU intervention possible.

Although the hardware is limited to four separate sound channels, software such as OctaMED uses software mixing to allow eight or more virtual channels, and it was possible for software to mix two hardware channels to achieve a single 14-bit resolution channel by playing with the volumes of the channels in such a way that one of the source channels contributes the most significant bits and the other the least.

The quality of the Amiga's sound output, and the fact that the hardware is ubiquitous and easily addressed by software, were standout features of Amiga hardware unavailable on PC platforms for years. Third-party sound cards exist that provide DSP functions, multi-track direct-to-disk recording, multiple hardware sound channels and 16-bit and beyond resolutions. A retargetable sound API called AHI was developed allowing these cards to be used transparently by the OS and software.

Broken Nomads and Chemical Shift.

Mattias and Ouwle are an ambient/downtempo duo formed during the summer of 2021. Ouwle moved to Mattias after he finished higher education so he could look for work and a permanent place to stay. One evening he was making music in FL studio and Mattias was hooked straight away, fighting post covid and exhaustion syndrome and not being able to play his according and do any kind of physical exercise Mattias was desperate to find something to be able to express his artistic side and to be creative. 
Together they made the track Afterglow.
They started to plan for more tracks and the name Broken Nomads was born, two broken souls in a broken world.

Chemical Shift is the solo project of Mattias from Broken Nomads.

Mattias experiments with and explores many different genres in electronic music, and spices it up with elements from other genres he’s listened to throughout his life.
