This box is the first virtually complete collection of FAUST official studio releases from the years 1971-1974. In addition to the debut album, it includes the 1972 album So Far, the legendary 1973 Virgin UK release The Faust Tapes ("Some chose to play frisbee with the LP, others said it changed their lives" as Jean-Hervé Peron noted), Faust IV and, for the first time ever, the mythical, so-called "Munich album" Punkt, which Faust recorded at Giorgio Moroder's Musicland Studios in 1974. For one reason or another, this last album never saw the light of day - until now. The bonus albums Momentaufnahme I and Momentaufnahme II also feature unreleased studio material, simultaneously affording us a fascinating glimpse of Faust's creativity in their Wümme studio phase.

Two 7-inch singles round off the Faust 1971-1974 compendium: Lieber Herr Deutschland is the demo recording they sent to Polydor in 1971, remarkably triggering a contract offer from the label who had something of a conservative reputation at the time. The B-side of the vinyl single is a song called Baby, which the aforementioned label rejected to release after they signed the band. The second 7-inch single in the box is a rerelease of So Far, the only officially released FAUST single, originally issued in 1972.

The vinyl version of the box set is limited to 2.000 copies, the CD version is limited to 1.000 copies.

Voluminous Arts happily announces its third official release, a 12 track digital album and accompanying 3xLP limited 3 color vinyl edition entitled “Disco” by Gavilán Rayna Russom’s elusive alias Black Meteoric Star. 

This is not a Disco record. The title deliberately troubles the music biz’s incessant tendency to hierarchize genre classification over the experience of listening. If you must categorize these mutant sounds think of them as a proposed alternate score for those long, caffeinated sessions in Abby Sciuto’s forensics lab, the soundtrack to a heavy workout in the Westchester Danger Room or perhaps the musical accompaniment to deep body investigations of your own ancestral memories. 

What this record really is, and why it’s called “Disco” has to do with the layering of time and life energy present in the spaces where we have traditionally danced to music which are sometimes called Discos. From the pounding urgency of “Muscle Machine” through the unbridled night vision romp that is “Fluid Feline Forms” and the shimmering investigations of “Whispers Between Worlds” to the extended lazer pointer focus of “I’m Unmelting” this record lays out a broad slab of practice-based research into the ghosts we connect with on the dance floor. Whether it be through partying in former industrial buildings, contested spaces of labor built on lands violently appropriated from indigenous people, uncomfortably inhabiting vacuums in queerness left by the AIDS epidemic, lifting lineages through sampling, or the relentless cycle of whitening that accompanies dance music’s march into the market, our experiences in the Disco have been permeated by the spectral and the haunted. Through rhythm and frequency, organized over time, this music blurs the veil between the living and the dead inviting those who move to it to connect with experiences beyond that false binary. 

What you have here is another fantastic Black Meteoric Star record, as always made without multitracking or overdubbing, recorded directly from single live takes. It is is utterly consistent with all that name has come to mean, but on “Disco” Black Meteoric Star’s vision has been allowed to expand into an almost mythologically epic space. Ancestral time works differently. Settle in and absorb the frequencies. As the closing track suggests, the virtual Disco these sounds evoke is for “Freaks Only”.

"ab"; a formal element occurring in loanwords from Latin, where it meant “away from”. Consider its significance when applied to words such as "above", "abdicate" and "abolition". When expanding this idea through sonic form, you could think of the paired words "Aboriginal Voices". This also has been the chosen band name for this couple in the Zurich eighties scene. Coming from a classical or Jazz background as well as being part of some of the more successful 80s Zurich punk bands, the pair's knowledge in pop songwriting did not convince them into stapling this format for their creative endeavours.

Consisting of Heinrich "Wüste" Zwahlen and Micheline "Misch" Pfister, their music features themes in the likes of the need for constant creation, the dullness of routine in one's life, anguish, revenge and uncertainty. The story of a nihilistic couple that drives forward in self-expression away from their immediate surroundings.

“The First Album”  is the earliest work of the band’s artistic path. Haunting, eerie with punk tonality, the story behind this music is narrated by Magda Vogel, the lead singer of avant-gardist Zurich band UnknownMix. Diverging in various genres in the likes of synth pop and post-punk, “The First Album” is the snapshot of the musical accomplishment of a couple over the career span of three years. Organic and lush, rough and electric, Aboriginal Voices, primitives of Zurich.

A fever daydream with samba-like curious rhythms that waves towards what could be perceived as  the fundamentals of early techno music. Loops, diverse, repeat. A more naive approach to songwriting, as these were the first recordings by the Aboriginal Voices, resemble more to compositional experiments as to a means to a more familiar, pop-oriented structure that are more reoccuring in their later works. The music presented in front of you aims to create a meeting place, a scenario, where an outsider’s perspective can catch a glimpse into seeing the duo’s artistic synergy. To witness through a squint their environment. To see each other and hear how their stories intersect and interact with their own music. In addition to their EP, tracks I-VI are compositions that served as a soundtrack for an experimental film for a friend of Magda’s.

A protagonist of the vibrant Neukölln scene, influential disc jockey and selector.
He works out of Berlin and is involved in various music/art projects under several dozen mysterious names. For arkaoda Berlin he works as music & art director and curates the musical program.
