In 1981 the Düsseldorf band Die Krupps (Jürgen Engler, Bernward Malaka, Ralf Dörper) released a seminal album which wrote its own chapter in the history of music: the “Stahlwerksinfonie” (Steelworks Symphony) was a near thirty-minute musical monolith of metal and guitar sounds with scattergun saxophone and shouts, held together by a monotonic bass line and stoic beat. The “Stahlwerksinfonie” proved a worldwide sensation, a nucleus of EBM and industrial rock. It stood as a direct descendent of Cluster's early works, although Krupps mastermind Jürgen Engler was as yet unfamiliar with the output of his purported antescedents. 
35 years later, a new version is upon us: the “Stahlwerkrequiem”, recorded with Engler's kindred spirits Mani Neumeier (Guru Guru), Jean-Hervé Peron and Zappi Diermaier (Faust), Pyrolator (Der Plan) and US postrock musician Scott Telles.

Michel Banabila, born 1961, is a sound artist, composer, and producer. Banabila releases music since 1983 and has produced musical scores for numerous films, documentaries, theatre plays and choreographies. This album collects 11 songs from his early years, released on tape, vinyl EPs or limited CD editions: beautiful minimal loop-based electronica, neo-classical pieces and ambient drone music. A true discovery!

Rolf Trostel is a protagonist of the so-called Berliner Schule / Berlin School (Tangerine Dream, Klaus Schulze). On his first album “Inselmusik” (1981) he explores the sonic possibilities of the recently introduced PPG wavetable synthesizer. Rolf  Trostel's second album "Two Faces" was released in 1982, only a year after his debut, "Inselmusik". While "Inselmusik" was intended as a basis for live perfor­mance, Trostel composed and produced the five instrumental tracks on "Two Faces" exclusively for this album. Cognitive dissonance is, at this point, an everyday part of modern society. The difference between belief and reality is blurrier than ever, and there is often sufficient manipulation to both so as to make the distinction intentionally unclear. The source of those manipulations can either be external, or deceptively internal.

False Readings On is the new album from renowned experimental composer, Eluvium. Its creation was originally inspired by themes of cognitive dissonance in modern society. By its conclusion it had become a mirror rather than a magnifying glass, evolving into an hour-long meditation on self-doubt, anxiety, and separation from one's self.

There is an emotional lucidity and melodic ingenuity to Eluvium's music that has made him increasingly stand out from the sea of ambient artists that his earlier albums no doubt helped inspire. Sounding like an orchestra ceaselessly performing even as it sinks beneath an ocean of distortions and tape noise – with the occasional operatic voice piercing the surface – False Readings On is assuredly the most daring, dynamic, and distinct album of his luminous career.

Düsseldorf in the early 1980s. Punk was finished, but its pathos still drifted desolately through pubs and shared flats. At the same time, Synthesizers had become increasingly affordable due to digital electronics, allowing more and more people to make music. This music pushed ahead slightly in order to dock onto the electronic sounds of the 1970s Krautrock scene – no one called it "cosmic music" back in those days. But most chose the detour via records by Cabaret Voltaire, Throbbing Gristle, Eric Random, Human League or the more unfamiliar experimental sounds gathered on a somewhat morbid-looking compilation entitled "The Elephant Table Album". Cassette labels like Klar! 80 with their exciting yellow and black packaged tapes madie it easy to release them and shops like Heartbeat and Pure Freude served as an umbrella for the disparate strands of the electronic side of post punk. Almost all artists on this compilation could be seen frequently there. The cassette generation did not bother about crossing over to pop music. They were pioneers of a music which would later develop into Drone, Ambient or Hypnaogogic.

Inspired by Punk and Post Punk, vibrant scenes dedicated to independent self-actualisation by means of sound circulated on self-distributed cassettes, in the 80s the cheapest and fastest medium, were developing not only in the FRG but also in the GDR (=DDR). The artefacts from that era tell of a stance of refusal in practice, and of the possibility to charge up on a high level, in spite of everything. "Magnetband" features 14 exciting experimental-electronic pieces from the GDR that originally have been released between 1984 and 1989 on cassettes only.
