Welcome back to another Transmission broadcasting from the HER 他 Transmission Mix Series, a weekly mix series showcasing incredible and amazing artists from around the world. For the 70th edition, we bring you a mix from ethnologist and sound-artist, Elin Franzén. 

Throughout her work, Elin Franzén focuses on the exploration of everyday life as its main theme. Elin sets out to express and explore within her sound with the use of ethnographic perspectives and methods. When asked about her style and approach, Elin said: 

“Sound is my special field; the social, emotional and place-making meanings of the sounds surrounding us. Normally field recordings make the raw material for my musical works. The  submitted dj mix blends my own field recordings and music with a variety of older and newer music and found sounds.”

Episode 40: Dave Clarke 

An extraordinary renegade talent, Dave's carved a career playing and making the finest underground electronic music charged with unrelenting energy and a punk ethos. Dave's influential album 'Archive One' was released in 1995 to critical acclaim - listed as one of John Peel's top 20 albums of all time. This was followed up with 2003's 'Devils Advocate' which continued to showcase his dedication to musical diversity laced with an incendury spirit. 

In 2001, he released the World Service Techno/Electro mixes, which are as integral to the scene today as they were then. He subsequently released a follow up before 'The Desecration Of Desire' came out in 2017. His live sets are legendary and have to be seen to be believed. Hear him play every week on his radio show for RTE which has over 800 episodes.

Cmy at Evigheten 2021

Ten years ago, Acid Test began with a simple concept—each track the label released would make use of the Roland TB-303. Like a producer purposefully paring down their studio setup, or the continuous imperative within underground electronic music to reduce, this concept engendered creativity with the introduction of what seemed to be an aesthetic limit. However, the decade that followed, which now culminates in the triple-LP compilation Ten Years Of Acid Test, proves acid is limitless.

That the Berlin-via-LA label would expand upon the classical conception of acid house and techno is no surprise considering the cast of characters that have come in fold over the past decade. Ten Years Of Acid Test gathers key material from the label's extended family of acid acolytes. There's that Vienna-via-LA maestro of sad, elegant acid Tin Man (Johannes Auvinen), whose "Afters Acid" is both a highlight within his prolific catalogue and a distillation of his symphonic approach to the 303. Detroit giants Erika and Marcellus Pittman, both of whom have released remixes on Acid Test, present their respective and singular Bass Line visions. Erika, the Interdimensional Transmissions lynchpin, crafts a dark, delicate take on broken techno on "Violet Fungus" while Pittman continues his cubist house explorations on "Unknown Species," both tracks straying from typical acid lines in favor of the intricate textures achievable on the 303.

This variation in approach applies to tempo as well. Irish-based master Lerosa, as well as Delsin affiliate VC-118A, delve into downtempo atmospherics. Meanwhile, Japanese deep techno virtuoso Wata Igarashi, SUED co-founder SW. (a regular on Acid Test's leftfield sub-label Avenue 66) and Patricia (one-half of Acid Test act Ociya) use acid as a creative jumping-off point for complex melodic concepts. Wata layers an orchestra of synth-bliss drone overtop a squelchy bassline on "Ephemeral." SW.'s "ChaIAnJAzzz" cycles through an array of dusted chords eventually landing in skewed, fuzzy rave nostalgia, anthemic chords held aloft by a wicked UK-flavour bass line. Patricia's “Higher Still” explores dreamy, IDM-flavoured acid, cinematic synthlines counterbalanced by propulsive, squelching acid.

Acid Test devotees will be thrilled at the return of various luminaries from the catalogue, including Achterbahn D'Amour, Skudge, AAAA, John Tejada and Donato Dozzy, whose memorable remix of Tin Man's "Nonneo" from Acid Test 01 served as a kind of proof of concept for the label. There's new blood too. San Francisco up-and-comer Sepehr makes his label debut with the excellent "Persian Acid Prince," as does Andreas Tilliander's beloved hardware techno project, TM404.

Like the original Hot Mix 5 Acid compilation, which highlighted the original cohort of Chicago acid innovators including Pierre, Fingers and Armando, Ten Years Of Acid Test is a valuable portrait of a group of artists linked by a dedication to innovation within acid, in line with the genre's storied roots. Over ten years, Acid Test has gracefully made a case for the 303's past, present and future, the story of acid continuing to unfurl in unpredictable, addictive patterns.

This is one of the first improvisations, several layers of improv onto tape via 3 head reel to reel tape delay.

Alla städer bär på en känsla som är svårt att fånga. En rörelse strax under ytan. Men inte en osynlig rörelse, utan en fortplantad, en sorts puls och en sorts underström som formas av - i spåren av - människornas rörelser och byggnaderna och platsernas volymer, håligheter och form. 

Man kan lyssna sig till denna underström. Genom ljud i staden och genom musik.

Vi tänkte försöka göra det.

En vandring genom städer och denna känsla. Med ljud och musik till hjälp. Ljudet som märkesljud - något som bara finns där i den staden eller i alla fall något som präglar den och musiken som en sort metaforiskt ljud från staden.

Young Miss Saeki (Unga fröken Saeki)is the second movement of four in From the Bottom of a Well (Från botten av en brunn) based on Haruki Murakami's novel Kafka on the Shore. The the sounds were designed from, and the music was written from a grounded theory analysis of the book. The piece was performed and recorded on the 16th of December 2021 by Robert Ek, clarinet; Kevin Kirs Verstege, cello; and Rikard Vilhelm Lindell, eurorack at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm. Linus Hillborg, a Swedish composer and musician based in Stockholm operating in numerous fields, ranging from electronic musics and interactive installations to post-punk and noise groups. In 2021 he released his solo-debut Magelungsverket, derived from the installation Orphan Works (2019) which he built with an obsolete video game engine. He has previously put out music under the moniker Atonet, co-runs the imprint Moloton and is set to release new organ and violin music through XKatedral in 2022.
“This mix is a healthy slab of early electronics, soundscape music, punk, video game soundtracks and new stuff from me and friends.”

Sometimes when playing organ preludes and postludes in church, I improvise on rap songs. Sometimes I start with something else (say, for example, motives based on my own interpretations of "redemption" or "jubilation" or "cupcakes") but the journey ends up, somewhere along the way, in the loopy-oriented terrain a rap song or vice versa. 

Most people listening out in the pews more often than not have no idea what sources I quote at the time (depending on who's out there, of course), but the most intriguing part of the exercise is that people of all stripes seem to like the pieces, and have said to be "moved" by them in ways unconventional and far away from a song written for, say, a club. 

There is little material intervallic and harmonic difference between a song played on the organ and a song played through a DAW after all; meaning is ultimately ascribed through timbre and context. This fact testifies to the power of a delicately placed recontextualization and is proof of an "everyday sacred"  contained in even the most deceivingly simplistic 4/4 riffs and 12-bar bass lines.
