South Africa is a magical place, full of wild landscapes and wonderful people.  This was my fourth time touring in the country, and what a privilege it has been.  Johannesburg and Cape Town offer very distinct experiences as cities, but ToyToy and Killer Robot have both curated similarly authentic underground movements over many years, and their hard work and longevity really shows.  

The energy on both dancefloors was passionate, raw, and deeply connected to the music.  Like the two cities, each party has its own unique vibe, but the common thread was a love for and knowledge of deep, hypnotic, underground dance music and an appreciation for the craft of DJing.  Both parties have a 'no photos' policy.  We need more of this please.  

Huge respect to the folks behind ToyToy and Killer Robot for their dedication to keeping underground culture alive, in the face of so many modern headwinds.  

Here are excerpts from both sets.  Cape Town from the earlier, clubbier portion of the night, and Joburg when I was winding down the garden in the wee hours of the morning after a wild four hour ride with their world-class crowd.

Until now, David Mayer needs to be on every radar as a young producer, breathing new life into classic Techno-virtues. Within his productions it seems to be the men-machine pulling the strings. They are grooving through plant floors, they are pumping blood into boilers and with just subtle manoeuvres, they are altering the soil temperature from stonecold to sweat inducing, depending on the current requirements.
Mayers new offering is directly taking on those qualities, while entitling it “Celsius”. It is indeed glowing floormaterial. It’s taking a rampant Techhouse-beat into a well heated Techno-basement, to add more and more condensing arrangements and finally open up for the instantly catching synth-hook. While he’s at it, Mayer controls a whole lot of scenes on the side. What he is offering here as particular finetunings and detailed soundmanipulations might lead into hourlong journeys under headphones. At the same time, the floor-efficiency of this tune couldn’t be more in your face. 
Then there’s the synth-tool on the flipside, leaving the kickdrum’s thickness behind, opening the door a bit more into the crystal clear synth-arrangements. Without a doubt, it’ll equip you with a tool, that’s letting the crowd feel save in the believe of having a little breather, to finally cook them in their own excitement in almost no time.

Life and Death Podcast Number Two by Tale of Us is a true psychological menace for those who conceive dance music as a monotone sound attitude. It has been recorded LIVE (no ableton, no post-production) on Friday December 31st 2010. We decided to publish this great podcast right before Tale of Us debut in a Life and Death party in Milan together with Clockwork, Tennis, Thugfucker. 

Tale Of Us is the new unique Berlin based sound scape project of Karm &amp; Matteo Milleri.
Both originally hailing from outside of Europe, Karm was born in Toronto and Matteo in New York, they moved to Milan while very young and this is where they met and formed the working bond that they now share. At the moment they are living out of Berlin an inspirational frontier that is allowing them to enlarge their bonds.
Their music and productions are a mixture of new sounds and genres ranging from pop to house, nu/disco to rock with everything in between,that can make people dance feeling their deepest emotions come alive.

 
The first full debut release of the duo will be out on 'Visionquest' (Label of Seth Troxler, Ryan Crosson, Shaun Reeves &amp; Lee Curtiss) in Spring 2011 whilst tracks already appear on labels such as 'Barraca Music', 'Cocoon' and 'Life and Death'. Various collaborations took place in 2010 alongside fellow 'Visionquest' label mates Shaun Reeves &amp; Ryan Crosson for critically acclaimed remixes and EP's. In particular the Tale Of Us remix on 'Life and Death' (Thugfucker - Disco Gnome) has seen them achieve much praise, airplay and success in record sales.

This week's Source to Cycle comes from Andre Galluzzi. Born in Frankfurt, and currently residing in Berlin, Andre appeared on our Cadenza label way back in 2007 with a super release alongside Guido Schneider and Florian Schirmaker. Andre’s career though can be traced back to the early 1990s, with regular DJ spots around Frankfurt and Berlin, and music releases for Force Inc, Plus 8, Cocoon and Ostgut Ton under his belt. A sophisticated little bastard of a DJ-mix

It’s about time for the fifth instalment of the Compost Black Label Series – unveiling some of the finest cuts in the label’s recent history in a versatile DJ mix crafted by Compost family member Thomas Herb, who built a strong reputation as a DJ when it’s about merging soul-injected house, techno and disco into a musical journey. Featuring winner tunes and remixes by Phreek Plus One, Osunlade, Woolfy, DJ T. or Rainer Trueby, Herb is also highlighting the work of new breed like Emil Seidel, Philipp Stoya and Emilie Nana, who all contributed high-quality tunes on the Black Label within the last year. Playing on top of the game since about one and a half decades, the Bob Beaman resident DJ, holding a steadily growing national and international schedule, is kicking things off with some proper nu-school vibes until he smoothly blends to balearic and disco influenced territories – then somehow he’s already in the middle of Holland Tunnel, the New Jersey styled tune by Muallem, opening our minds eye for the glittering skyline of Manhattan and our ears for this music called house - unfolding its purest grooves and energy within the mix. Keeping up the level, Thomas Herb subsequently heading the ship towards a middle west inspired direction, throwing in some decent rave signals without loosing his fluent, elegant style he carefully morphs into a old school Chicago vibe! The set is closing with Lukas Bohlender’s beautiful stringloaden emo-houser Club Chateâu. With Compost Records head honcho Michael Reinboth, Thomas Herb co-hosted the Compost Black Label Sessions clubnights held at Harry Klein and later at Bob Beaman for the last four years – sharing the decks with the likes of Jerome Sydenham, Deetron, Jay Shepheard, Osunlade, Agnés, John Talabot, Willie Graff, Kalabrese, Karizma, Heidi, Permanent Vacation, Move D & Thomas Meinecke, DJ T., Nuno Dos Santos and many more. With SHOW-B he’s teaming up for some well recieved productions and remixes from time to time – these smart guys also hosting the weekly radioshow Compost Black Label Sessions, which has been set up in order to spread the vibe of the label and correspondent clubnight to a wider audience.

Growing up in the midwestern United States, Butane was steeped in the classic underground house and techno sounds that originated in Chicago and Detroit. Further influences came from afar: New York house, west coast house, UK tech house, Cologne techno, Berlin minimal.  His formative years were spent on the dancefloors of legendary venues like Twilo and Vinyl in New York City, Space and Crobar during Miami's Winter Music Conference, and Rednofive in Chicago.

An avid record collector and DJ since 2002, Andrew’s infamous monthly party in St. Louis established an underground scene in the city and became a must-stop for touring international artists.  In 2004, Andrew embarked on his own artistic journey in the studio, despite lacking any formal musical training (a classically trained pianist he was not).  Proving to be a fast learner, his unique and eclectic sound began earning him worldwide acclaim on international record labels in a mere matter of months.  The German press dubbed him a “wunderkind”.  He moved to Berlin shortly after, residing in the city from 2006-2011.  

Now a resident of San Francisco, Butane is renowned for a steadfast commitment to his craft, and stands as a pillar of artistic integrity and consistency in the rapidly changing realm of electronic dance music.  He values studio work over social media, and boasts an impressive and sprawling discography released by some of the most respected imprints in the business.  As the founder of three labels of his own - Alphahouse, Little Helpers, and his new Extrasketch project - Butane's impact on the industry is both deep and enduring.

For over two decades, Andrew has traversed the globe curating unforgettable sonic experiences.  From underground raves to name-brand clubs, electrifying festival stages to poolside soirées, he has graced the decks in over 60 countries.  Infused with energy, finesse, and sophistication, his sets resonate deeply with in-the-know audiences.  Armed with a meticulously curated collection of custom edits, remastered classics, and hidden gems from decades in the house and techno business, Butane draws on his considerable experience moving crowds to deliver versatile, unpredictable, pitch-perfect performances.
