Active in the scene for well over 10 years, Enrica has dedicated herself to making tunes and digging deep, comfortably walking the paths between techno, electro, house and experimental. Whether on her own, or as part of the formidable duo ERIS (alongside Dea Dvornik), the ethos remains the same.

It’s been a while since we’ve had some prime listening material to share with you all so we thought we best get back in to the swing of things for 2017.

For our next episode we’ve invited along one of our bestest pals in the form of Dog Eat Dog co-founder Toby Nicholas. We’ve known Toby for many, many moons and his selection is always of an impeccable standard as he consistently keeps his ear firmly to the ground for those treasured gems, both old and new. This is why he’s always on the money taking care of bookings at one of our fave haunts in London, The Pickle Factory. 

This particular mix was recorded live on his home turf warming up for past BSU guest Sonja Moonear towards the end of last year.

Before RA and Absolut bring Marcel Dettmann to Leeds for a rare house set, we're getting a fresh perspective on local crew Butter Side Up. Starting in 2011 the guys have brought the likes of Margaret Dygas, Fred P, Theo Parrish and Craig Richards to basement club Wire, with recent years finding them putting on parties in London and around Europe.

On this mix from Butter Side Up key player Hamish Cole, we get a vibrant portrait of the their sound: Warm, unpredictable and melodic.

Circus' Grand leader, Yousef, played an unusual role at his last gig at London's Electric venue in Brixton. Rather than taking peak time slot, the man behind one of Liverpool's biggest nights set about a warm up set ahead of the mighty Carl Cox and by all reports, rather enjoyed the experience.  We managed to grab a recording of the two hour set and chatted to Yousef about how he approaches these things - this is one for you, all up and coming DJ's!

Yousef: “This mix is all about the art of the warm-up, something which often gets forgotten in clubland and a set I don’t get to play too often any more, not even at my own event, Circus. It’s where pretty much every DJ starts out their career (I did way back in the annexe of Cream) and it’s maybe the most important set of the night, starting the ball rolling for the evening and setting the vibe and the tempo for the DJs that play later.
At Circus I have to listen to a lot of warm-ups and play a few extended ones, and it’s definitely one of the key ingredients of what we do. You need to be able to trust someone to slowly coerce people onto the dancefloor, building the energy over a period of time rather than going for the jugular straight away. There’s nothing worse than someone banging out the tunes to an empty dancefloor ten minutes after opening, and we’ve always strived to ensure this is one of the best sets of the evening.

Playing for Carl Cox’s Revolution at Electric Brixton I saw a rare chance to do the warm-up slot away from Circus, so I asked to see if I would be able to lay down the tone of the night beforehand. This mix reflects everything I think a good warm-up set should have and it also gave me the chance to play a lot of records I don’t get to play very often; starting off deep and emotive and slowly building the pace. There’s some lovely spacey almost electronica sounds at the start, very warm, before we end up getting into some serious floor wrecking house music, all in the space of two hours.”

Our first mix of 2019 comes from none other than Joey Anderson, and we really cannot overstate our excitement about this one. Since the first Exchange Place releases on Strength Music over a decade ago, Joey has solidified his place as one of the great talents of USA dance music. He came to DJing and production via the dance floor, where he spent years dancing, battling, and educating, and his artistic ethos is imbued with all of that dance floor magic -- that flow and stellar quality that only arrives via a respectful and practiced listener. His sound exhibits a reverence for the underground house networks of NYC/NJ, but his palette seems to strike from some distant moon. He truly has a voice all his own, and we thank him for sharing this session.

Released in October 2017, this mix was previously only available on a limited cassette from Brevity Tapes and featured a separate mix from Karl Meier on the flip side. The approach was to do something slightly different than the average podcast or live mix, instead reaching a bit deeper into our collections and present a dynamic narrative with the framework of a 45 minute cassette tape. This one was super fun to put together and features a range of IDM and electro tracks from Dynamo, Andrea Parker, Aphex Twin, Peder Mannerfelt, DMX Krew, Sleeparchive, and more.

Patrick Russell - Brevity Tapes Mix

Efdemin has all but perfected his deep, expertly reduced take on house and techno. The German artist has mastered his form over the course of numerous 12”s on various labels, including three albums on Dial Records. They are intricate, mind bending affairs that take you in on yourself and constantly explore new ground. His hybrid mix CD on his own Naïf imprint and Curle last year was another career high point, and recently he has turned himself towards experimental and microtonal composition with yet more fascinating results. February 2019 will see Ostgut Ton release New Atlantis, his latest album and one inspired by Francis Bacon’s unfinished 17th century novel of the same name. Promising to fuse his left-of-centre take on dance music with a new found passion for experimental sound art, it’s the latest chapter in a fascinating artistic story. 

His podcast for us is a decidedly club-focussed mix, featuring the sort of warped synths and underlapping grooves you would expect of the man. There are multi-layered tracks of percussion, sound design and stringy rhythms to start, then things slip into long, draw out passages of tunnel vision techno before the drums begin to hit harder to carry you home. At times playful, at others deadly serious, it sums up the career of Efdemin perfectly.

Next up in the series is the great Carl H, from the UK. Carl is the man behind the label amazingly record label, Animals On Psychedelics, and resident of the great London-based trance warehouse parties, Sub:System. In other words, Carl is a truly central figure in the UK-underground scene. 

In this mix Carl is serving us a trip of tripped out-, tribal- and slimey old school trance on vinyl. A true bliss.
