Description: A piece for Naviar Records' weekly haiku challenge. As the first word is 'experimenting', I thought I'd experiment with odd time signatures. The haiku has 5, 5 and 8 syllables, so my piece is based round two bars of 5 beats and 1 bar of 8 beats. I also wanted the piece to be quite melodic with the melancholy feel of a moonlit night under the trees.

I really enjoyed listening to these warm sounds!

Here’s another haiku by Tachibana Hokushi, also author of the poem we published last week.

Tachibana Hokushi, whose real name was Tachibana Genjiro, was born in Kanazawa in 1665. Hokushi was one of Basho’s most famous students at the time, and he even accompanied the great master during part of his famous journey through the narrow roads of the North, from Kanazawa to Matsuoka.

A highly improvised piece. I wanted to capture the spontaneous feel that comes with creating melodies, phrases, in the moment. The minimalistic pattern at the beginning was the seed and from there the journey begins. The name 'Didessa' comes from Didessa River in Ethiopia, as the music for me had the feeling of something neverending, wild, yet continually flowing. I also felt drawn to the landscapes there while I was creating this piece.

🙏 Actually, I have quite high standards when it comes to post-processing. I apologize for the lax work in the last third (about 3:50). Getting better...

...but I deliberately left out the percussion. I was asked why I don't back epic drums. Well, listen for yourself! Imagination!
