Another track produced for Naviar records' Haiku Challenge. Coincidentally, earlier in the day I had been reading about 'stretto fuga' techniques of the 16th Century (often used in religious music) which I thought fitted well with the theme of the haiku, so decided to experiment with elements of that approach. For me the 'serpent concealed' is represented by the chaotic violin that emerges near the end.

I used to busk in the Castle Square.

I'm sure a drummer would have made the toy reflex hammer I used to strike a bit of wood sound better and a bass player could get a better sound out of my acoustic bass with a missing string. The recording could have sounded great by someone who knows how to use my recording machine.  My three part harmony might sound nice done by a singer and the song would be better if written by Robyn Hitchcock. I had fun anyway

Dedicated to the Funklebury Moth

Chimney pots, old rocks
Gargoyles and cobbled lanes 
Ice cream shops, roof tops 
Open fires, grape and grain 
Morris Minors used to park here
Before it was pedestrianised
Now Morris Dancers clack again
For little ladies and Knights
Sunshine lighting limestone castle walls 
Makes it feel like Cairo

Topsy-turvy beauty, twisted roots and iron gates 
Twinkling window lights, people laughing with their mates
Superior musicians getting out their violins
The bagpiper has appeared

A Moog iPad app was made to play a simple continuous saw wave ... which was then filmed, being waggled around ... the resulting recording was slowed down, to really hear the true phasing effects, due entirely to the proximity and orientation between the iPad speakers and the video recorder ... Enjoy! 🤗

this is a reworked version of a track i'm currently composing, based on an imaginary closing scene for the game "silent hill 2". the game touches on themes of isolation and distance, and in recasting my track for this week's haiku i incorporated several natural recordings - magnetic field drones, bird song, and windswept fields. the "alarm" sound that emerges near the end of the track is my guitar run into a feedback loop in ableton 11.
