Study exploring a new, long-term modular patch.

disquiet 0367 – [Trio Initiate] Monosynth Study

Ahh the joy's of modular synthesis! @lcalytrix laid down this excellent generative exploration of sound using several modules in a "Krell patch". According to learningmodular.com: "Recreating this patch is a challenge many modular musicians like to tackle. It is based on the 1959 movie Forbidden Planet, in a segment where they supposedly play the music of the ancient Krell race. In general terms, each note has a random pitch, envelope, and duration."

To add contrast to this, I added some more sonic explorations using a single module, the enigmatic "Interstellar Radio" by Schlappi Engineering. https://schlappiengineering.com/products/interstellar-radio/ I ran into Eric Schlappi at a Modular Nights concert in Seattle and he told me he discovered after releasing it that if you patch the error out into the signal in of the module, all kinds of crazy things will happen. He was right. All sounds on the right channel came from this patch with no other external control. The only other thing I did was run it through a mixer to control the volume.

The manual for the Interstellar Radio tells you to plug this module in and "Converse with infinite space". Sounds like something aliens would do.

The Krell Conversing with Infinite Space [disquiet0368]

I selected the jam by Alanza (left channel, https://soundcloud.com/aalanzaa/disquiet-0367-trio-initiate-monosynth-study) and Calytrix (right channel, https://soundcloud.com/lcalytrix/a-study-in-euclidean-dynamics) and added my track to the center to create this asynchronous trio. I continued the frenzied pace of the duet with an arpeggiated Z3TA+2 program in sync with the rhythm of the other two tracks. I performed some of the modulations in real time, others I added afterwards.

Crew Called Self - Expanding Limitations - PATCHABLE - 0001

The three modules used for this patch are Maths, QPAS & Mimeophon.  Not other modules, effects or post processing was done.

Patch Notes:
The basic idea is Maths channel 4 clocks the Mimeophon and output goes to QPAS level and Freq 1 so the audio and delay are synced.  I am using Maths ch1 as a VCO into the QPAS. I also mult the Mimeophon output into Maths ch 3 to control feedback going into Freq 2 on QPAS. There was an awful lot of knob turning and button pushing happening in the patch.  

This is the main patch, but does not cover everything.
- Maths ch 4 in cycle, slow
- Maths EOC out to Mimeophon clock in
- Maths ch 1 in cycle, fast (audio rate)
- Maths ch 1 out > QPAS left in 
- QPAS stereo lowpass out to Mimeophon
- Mimeophon right output to Maths ch 3
- Maths ch 3 output to QPAS Freq 2

Sample and Hold from Behringer Neutron into A, B, Control, Drive and Resonance on Vult Freak Module (used onboard attenuverters) into iPad for Eventide effects.

I cycled through all of the filter models on the Freak as well as each of the modes of the filter (hp, lp, notch, band, etc.) trying to find little sweet spots. I think I found some!

I'm not much for sampling, so I tried to use various noise colors to accomplish the prompt. I decided to use every color of noise from Sapel for at least 1 rhythmic element, and tried to do something at least a little unusual for each one.
Pink noise into Ripples with a bit of resonance, and random duration envelopes modulating FM and amplitude made the bass drum.
Blue noise into Aperture, with a narrow width, frequency at max, and some resonance and feedback made the right panned noise voice.  The frequency was modulated with an inverted envelope.
White noise into Optomix then into the left side of Chronoblob with time at minimum made the karplus like sound panned left.
The swell was red noise into Prism, in high pass mode with resonance, time, and comb at 12 o'clock, into Chronoblob's right channel, with a moderate time setting, then into Erbe-Verb.
And lastly for noise based elements, the glitchy tom/snare thing was Pink noise into Sprott, set to almost self resonate, went into the Addac 601 input 2 for some shaping. More pink noise was mixed in through input 1 of the 601 to get some of the fuzz back.
The bassline was not based on noise. It was the Dannysound EN219 into QPAS. With some FM and SR modulation. 
Euclidean Circles and Marbles provided triggers, and Arpitecht provided pitch.
