This week's Disquiet Junto prompt was to create a piece of music that you might hear as you wait to enter a therapist's office.

I knew I wanted some inoffensive "waiting" music that repeated so much that it faded into the background. I also wanted to recreate the white noises machines that are used to block out conversations. I also added to binaural waves that beat at the "gamma" frequency, which allegedly boost self-awareness and problem-solving (I think? For the life of me I can't find the web page I got that info from). 



I used some sidechain gating and flipped sidechain gating to the white noise play with and against the percussion and before I knew it, I had a 3 minute song.

Living rurally has its perks except for when one is listening for sounds of civilization ... need something of the "natural world?" No problem! I'm swimming in it. Need some industrial sounds? A little more challenging ... especially when I travel to an even more remote destination in the hills of Pennsylvania to be with family. I wasn't sure what I was going to be able to capture for sounds of civilization as Amish buggies count as traffic noise, but they don't really have a predictable rush hour to make recording them easy. So I was surprised and delighted when I saw this family working their corn field on the side of the road just out of town. I stood less than 10 feet away from their machines as they drove by and looked at me like I was a bit of a fish out of water. I waved at them and they waved back. Mission accomplished!

20211203 What Can Only Be Heard Without Listening [disquiet0518]

This week's Disquiet Junto prompt was to take the sounds of “nature” and “civilization” as recorded by other members of the Disquiet Junto and combine them into one single piece of music/sound. 

I picked two sounds at random: Bick Brannigan's recording of Ginger represented the sounds of nature (https://soundcloud.com/bick-brannigan-840174692/ginger-disquiet0516) and undermulden's Christianshavn Rush Hour represented civilization (https://soundcloud.com/undermulden/christianshavn-rush-hour-disquiet0517).

I listened to the two tracks in isolation, trying to pick out the interesting bits to make the sections of the song. The white noise of the rush hour made an excellent hi-hat, and a low motorcycle vroom provided us with a bassline and transitions (it was also incredibly hard to mix!).  Ginger's excellent sense of melody put her in the lead. I used Melda's MUnison plug-in to simulate double-tracking, which really made the dog's barks "pop" and be in the front of the mix. Neat trick!

I livestreamed the process, and will try to get the video up on YouTube ASAP!
