Russian natives Capital Bass continue to shine a light into their buoyant local scene following up OL’s ‘Make Things’ EP with Formally Unknown’s debut label release: ‘Untitled’ EP. 

‘Untitled’ opens up, building behind a gently reverberated 4/4 kick and interchanging hat sequences. Hypnotic, off-kilter samples and subtle flecks of acid generate a brooding and purposeful tone as a sense pressure builds throughout. 

‘Tribalz’ steadily grows with space echo tails drifting in amongst full and tenebrous pads. A brash and busy 2-step rhythm emerges as an overdriven kick sticks wood-blocks and cowbells to the floor. In a manner akin to the likes of Joe and Blawan, rattling rhythms are mapped across all corners of the mix with imperious accuracy. 

The digital only ‘Will Never’ gambols into focus as another frazzled kick forms a bustling underbelly beneath rich and tangible textures. Rumbling bass-tones swell under reverberated vocal chops as more primal rhythms clatter up above. 

More auspicious and effective bass-music from a beacon in the Russian club-scene.

abers is a multidisciplinary artist, DJ, and producer from Albuquerque, based out of CDMX. They host a radio show, [antro]pología, on Threads Radio London, focused on showcasing the current sounds and trends in the club world of LatAm. They also form part of CA$$É Collective, an experimental project with a focus on global club music diaspora. Their forthcoming EP, ‘zozobra’ merges influences from wave, dubstep, and grime with organic percussion and ambient sound design.

[Premiere] abers - zozobra (EP out on Jan 6th via CA$$É Collective)

The second Lobster Theremin white label comes from the mysterious Australian producer, Daze. Making his release debut with four original tracks, Daze covers varying strains of tough melodic house, ferocious acid and old school breakbeat, taking us on an experiential journey into the heart of British rave culture via Detroit-influenced electro and rough and ready tape jams. 

Opening with an overdriven call to action, Drag Ball traverses the lines between synth-driven house and scorched techno, pulsating with cracked clap-snare derivatives and soothing yet slightly paranoid Juno lines. 

Untitled signals the beginning of the generally classic slant of the EP, channeling hair-raising acid lines under some crunchy electro drum programming. But it's the soaring synths that set it apart, floating aloft the bubbling madness below. 

On the flip there are two mixes of title track Lips.. The '94 Original DAT Dub having been culled raw from the source providing a deeper and less immediate take on an euphoric modern classic. The revised '07 Skyline Mix sees the mix brightened and pumped up for serious systems, with the extra-layered pads making that euphoric mid-section feel like ten pills rather than two.

Capital Bass has launched at the end of 2006 at Moscow’s 16Tons Club with the participation of Kode9. The parties continued with performances from such British sound-system music defining artists as Skream, Loefah, Plastician, Mala/Digital Mystikz and Benga. This was a starting point and a very important impulse for the further development of dubstep movement in the capital, or even in the whole of Russia, it could be said.

From 2009 Capital Bass continued to introduce the crowd to the artists who push the underground scene forward and go beyond genres: Pearson Sound, Untold, Bok Bok, D Bridge, Marry Anne Hobbs - just to name a few.

Since 2012 CB started to focus more on the Russian local story and became a record label releasing the various kind of genres. Capital Bass releases not only names who have already made headlines at home and abroad - like OL and Ponty Mython - but also keeps an eye on emerging producers such as Ilevina, Formally Unknown and others.
