"Everybody's got a different idea o' why they call the place Mer Rouge--you know, "Red Sea" in French--when they ain't even any ocean around. Hell, we 200 miles from the Gulf!

"The one that's right, I think, is the story 'bout folks livin' up on Red Hill, lookin' down on the flat Delta, all covered in red clover in the Spring...that sounds like a Red Sea, don't it?" (Uncle Hassell, taped interview, May, 1989)

For this piece, Hassell used tape loops ("some of 'em was so worn out, you couldn't tell what it was") and synthesizers to evoke the sight of Prairie Mer Rouge in the early days of settlement, as a warm breeze created waves on a sea of red clover.

During the second wave of the pandemic in Poland, in autumn, vocalists Agata Harz and Katarzyna Smoluk recorded improvised tracks based on an ancient Slavic spell, or ‘enchantment’, as they called it, the purpose of which is to call forth spring after a dark, terrifying wintertime. The vocal tracks lie at the heart of Tim Hecker’s composition, commissioned or Unsound's 'Intermission' album, to be released on March 5th, 2021.
