For May 2023 Carhartt WIP Radio welcomes @sneakersocialclub, an independent label which began in 2011 and is run by Jamie Russell aka @lowendactivist. In addition to being a producer and DJ, Russell also helms a number of other imprints, including BRUK, Low End Activism, @artefaxrecords, and @hypercolourrecords – which he co-runs with DJ & producer @alexhypercolour.
 
Although Sneaker Social Club’s name comes from Russell’s love of sneakers, its output is much more aligned with the UK hardcore continuum, echoing everything from jungle and breaks, to early 2000s grime and dubstep.
 
For this show, Russell has gone through the label’s back catalogs, putting together a mix with his favorite tracks released on the imprint so far.  As ever, the mix is accompanied by an interview, where Russell discusses his many different imprints and aliases, why he relishes the process of production over DJing, and being inspired by the rhythm of a washing machine. This month’s Carhartt WIP Radio show features @tartelet-records, a Copenhagen-based label founded in 2007 and run by Emil Nyholm. From house and trance to soul, funk and dub, the label is known for its varied releases, uncovering new talent like Brandt Brauer Frick, Uffe, or Doc Sleep.

For this episode, Nyholm prepared a mix featuring new releases from the likes of Zopelar, Max Graef, and Glenn Astro, as well as tracks from the archive by ABUNAI, Sopace Ghost, and Urulu. The Mission

Channeling peak-era dark garage ambience and contemporary trance stomper technology in the same breath, on their debut collaboration Silhouette (AKA Vision of 1994) and Kobayashi Maru join forces on Amphibian Records for The Mission, a 4-track EP that airlifts the snarl and frayed temper of early dubstep into the psychedelic frontiers of modern dance music.

On the A1, the title track’s driving 140BPM two-step thunder, scored with doomy metallic bellowing reminiscent of early Distance and a rolling bassline right out of Big Apple’s playbook; on the flip, Last Transmission’s frosty atmospherics and crisper-than-snow UKG-inflected percussion, a sharp retort on every third beat superimposed onto a trance-techno model.

Two lower-tempo cuts kiss each runout groove, with no lessening up in sound pressure. Winter Outpost is at the last of its tensile strength, neo-noir synths pulled skin tight over a frame of sharpened breakbeat, while End Credits shakes it all loose with a serpentine beat...  more

Kobayashi Maru & Silhouette - The Mission

This month’s Carhartt WIP Radio show features the London-based record label @hooversound, co-founded in 2020 by musicians and long-time friends @iamsherelle and @naina_ldn. Focused on pushing the boundaries of electronic music, from hardcore jungle to cutting-edge dubstep and gqom, Hooversound has released music from the likes of Special Request and Tim Reaper, Deft, and Drumskull, as well as its founders. 

For this edition of Carhartt WIP Radio, both Sherelle and Naina have created a fast-paced mix pulsing with Hooversound’s signature energy, showcasing the wide array of artists on their roster, while hinting at some forthcoming releases.
