For May 2023 Carhartt WIP Radio welcomes @sneakersocialclub, an independent label which began in 2011 and is run by Jamie Russell aka @lowendactivist. In addition to being a producer and DJ, Russell also helms a number of other imprints, including BRUK, Low End Activism, @artefaxrecords, and @hypercolourrecords – which he co-runs with DJ & producer @alexhypercolour.
 
Although Sneaker Social Club’s name comes from Russell’s love of sneakers, its output is much more aligned with the UK hardcore continuum, echoing everything from jungle and breaks, to early 2000s grime and dubstep.
 
For this show, Russell has gone through the label’s back catalogs, putting together a mix with his favorite tracks released on the imprint so far.  As ever, the mix is accompanied by an interview, where Russell discusses his many different imprints and aliases, why he relishes the process of production over DJing, and being inspired by the rhythm of a washing machine. Carhartt WIP Radio May 2023: Sneaker Social Club

For the first Carhartt WIP Radio show of 2024, we’re focusing on the Dresden-based independent record label @uncanny-valley-dresden.
 
Launched by four friends as a way of platforming music by close peers and collaborators, the label released its first record in 2010 – a dynamic house-driven compilation featuring Jacob Korn, Cuthead, Thomas Fröhlich, and Break SL. 
 
Almost fifteen years later, Uncanny Valley has grown into an international, multidisciplinary effort, collaborating with artists and musicians alike from Brooklyn, Berlin, and New York City. And with the addition of sub-labels Rat Life and shtum, its sound has remained just as diverse, spanning house, hip-hop, acid, and synth-wave.
 
For this month’s episode, Uncanny Valley created a mix which delves into its eclectic back catalog, highlighting favorite tracks alongside some hidden gems. Expect a journey through jazz-funk, hip hop, ambient, Italo and techno. 

As ever, the mix is accompanied by an interview, where Uncanny Valley’s founders discuss the need for labels in the modern music industry, Dresden’s rich electronic music history, and new projects in the pipeline. Read the interview via via www.carhartt-wip.com/journal/music.

Leading this month’s Carhartt WIP Radio show is @red-lebanese, a French publishing house and independent record label, whose music production arm operates under Studio X8. 

The platform was founded in 2012 by visual artist Pablo Jomaron and musician Quentin Leroy (AKA @madreyy), who bonded as childhood friends over a shared love of graffiti, art, and hip-hop. With a focus on physical media, Red Lebanese has released books and zines, as well as cassette tapes and vinyls from the likes of Rio de Janeiro rapper @adrianobico and Bordeaux MC Prosper.

For this episode of the Carhartt WIP Radio show, Jomaron and Mad Rey have incorporated their collage of influences into a mix, which includes syrupy rhythms from Lime G, synthwave sounds from  @buntlax, and lo-fi acid from Doukkala. The Demiurge Is Just A Pack Of Cards, Don't Get Dealt it's Reality And Remain Stranded On Deck

When Detroit native John Derek Yancey, better known as Illa J, released his album "Home,” in 2017, it was partly an act of self-affirmation for the rapper-slash-singer. As the younger brother of hip hop legend J Dilla, who tragically passed away in 2006, the 32-year-old artist has spent much of his career in the shadow of his illustrious sibling – even playing a bit-part role in Slum Village after Dilla’s death. Around 2014, he eventually parted with the crew and moved to Montreal where he would hone his artistic skillset, free from the influence of his native Detroit peers. On returning to his hometown, he went straight to the studio to record “Home.” It was the album that would see him step out of his brother’s shadow for the first time, showcasing his talent not simply as a rapper, but as an accomplished, ambitious vocalist. Last November he released his latest album, the eponymously titled “John Yancey.” It’s one which oscillates more sharply between R&B and hip hop, delivering twelve songs of wispy vocals and breathless raps. For Carhartt WIP Radio, Yancey has selected some of his tunes, that DJ Glenn Astro put together to showcase the eclectic nature of his work, from that raw rap talent shown on his first album – the 2008 release “Yancey Boys” – to a more mature, mellow artist a decade on.
