In the next episode of our monthly RELEVANT PARTIES podcast series, Carhartt WIP features Adrian Sherwood, the legendary English dub music record producer and founder of labels such as Green Tea, Pressure Sounds, and @on-u-sound-records. 

As a producer, Sherwood worked with luminaries including Vivian Goldman, Creation Rebel, Cabaret Voltaire, and Lee “Scratch” Perry, while also shaping remixed compositions for the likes of Primal Scream, Depeche Mode and Einstürzende Neubauten.

His most influential label, On-U Sound, is stylistically rooted between dub, experimental, Reggae, post-Punk, and electronica, and is known for groundbreaking releases by artists and collectives, from African Head Charge and Singers & Players to Bim Sherman and Tackhead. In recent years, Sherwood has worked with contemporary acts, like the Japanese trio Nisennenmondai and UK ensemble The Near Jazz Experience, as well as releasing cutting-edge bass music together with Bristol’s dubstep wizard Pinch.

For this episode, host Chal Ravens sat down with Adrian Sherwood to discuss squatting with Ari Up and Neneh Cherry, dub reggae philosophy, and why you should never trust a hippy.

London-based Reggae Roast honors the one and only Barrington Levy in the run-up to his birthday on April 30th with this essential mix.

Reggae icon Barrington Levy’s career traces to the earliest years of VP Records. Three of the company’s first singles on its Roots From The Yard imprint in 1979 were “Revelation,” “Collie Weed,” and “A Yah Me Deh,” the latter being VP’s first release from producer Henry ‘Junjo’ Lawes. VP manufactured and distributed Levy’s Shaolin Temple on the Jah Guidance imprint in 1979 (one of four LPs to drop that year from the young star), followed by Robin Hood in 1980, and Prison Oval Rock in 1984. As popular as Levy was in the 1980s, he stepped up his game at the end of the decade and into the 1990s with his covers of Bob Andy’s “Too Experienced” and “My Time.”

VP released his first definitive greatest hits anthology, Too Experienced, in 1998 and then Reggae Anthology: Sweet Reggae Music (2013) and Teach The Youth (2009). Greensleeves titles also include English Man (1979), The Barrington Levy Collection (1990), and Barrington Levy’s DJ Counteraction (1995).

Remixed from the original Conscious Sounds 7”, the track features the vocals of Singer Blue in his true infamous style. Vibronics kept the theme of the Dre-Beat melody that made the original mix such a hit, but this time it was given a lush melodica and acoustic guitar treatment in the Vibronics Studio over 14 years ago. A well-loved favourite of sound system sessions the world over, ‘If A No Jah’ is the 6th chapter of the SCOOPS Gold Disc Classic Series !!

Expansive dub vibrations from the On-U Sound maestro.

Adrian Sherwood has spent nearly five decades reshaping how dub is heard and felt. From absorbing reggae and funk as a teenager at the Newlands Club in High Wycombe to cofounding On-U Sound in 1979, he’s been a restless force in British sound system culture. His debut production, Dub From Creation, signalled his instinct to twist the Jamaican form into bold, experimental directions.

That spirit defined On-U Sound, where reggae collided with post-punk, industrial and synth pop to forge a catalogue still unlike anything else. Sherwood became a crucial bridge, producing for legends like Prince Far I, Bim Sherman and Lee “Scratch” Perry, while also working with Depeche Mode, Nine Inch Nails and Sinéad O’Connor.

His  RA Mix (yes, you read that right) arrives at a moment of renewal—RA.1001 is the first in a new era for the series. (After 1,000 editions of the RA Podcast, we're updating the name to better reflect what it's become.) 

Recorded at his Ramsgate studio, the 76-minute mix folds in cuts from <i>The Collapse Of Everything<i> alongside material from across the On-U Sound universe, plus collaborations with Panda Bear, Sonic Boom, Coldcut and Spoon. It's Sherwood doing what he's always done: stretching dub into endless new shapes.

Founded in 1996 by DJ and producer Peanut Butter Wolf, the Los Angeles-based label is known for its eclectic sound, which ranges from hip hop to experimental psychedelic rock, with elements of soul, funk and jazz in between. The label has also released records by acclaimed artists, such as J Dilla, Madlib and Dam-Funk, as well as a new generation that includes Knxwledge, Kiefer, Sudan Archives, and Mndsgn.

The fourth episode of RELEVANT PARTIES, Carhartt WIP’s monthly podcast series dedicated to the work of groundbreaking record labels, features Jazzy Sport from Tokyo, Japan.

The label has been one of Japan’s most important hubs for hip hop culture since it launched in 2003. Taking influence from the vinyl-worshipping beat culture championed by the likes of J Dilla and Madlib, Jazzy Sport has been an essential platform for homegrown artists like hip hop crew Gagle, veteran selector Grooveman Spot, and acid jazz ensemble Cro-Magnon. But while Jazzy Sport’s roots are in hip hop, the label and its record stores are an eclectic portal for all kinds of music – and they’ve even branched out into physical recreation, famed for their ski trips and hip hop-soundtracked climbing competitions.

Next up on our monthly Carhartt WIP RELEVANT PARTIES podcast series is Munich-based label Public Possession. In our fifth episode, the label’s founders Valentino Betz and Marvin Schuhmann talk about their uncompromising and uncommon vision for Public Possession, which was founded in 2013 with the intention of it being more than just a musical outlet. The result has seen the label produce art, clothes and events, acting as something of a cultural hub for the Bavarian city.

At its core, however, is Public Possession’s musical releases, which have included the likes of Bell Towers; Australian producer Andras; Austria’s king of glam club pop Wolfram; up-and-coming New Zealanders Eden Burns and Nice Girl; and multidisciplinary Taiwanese artist Yutie Lee.
