Duelo De Gigantes

I began working on this beat a month ago and realized it was an opportunity to incorporate more synthwave into my collection with a touch of space rock. As I developed the beat, lyrical ideas began to emerge, along with thoughts of adding a guitar. This music could serve as a way to divert your attention from current events and transport you to a different place. It's like endless summers from the past, with stunning poolside views and well-dressed companions.

Description: I started with an obvious beat and intended to create more synthwave and space rock, but it turned out to be more rock than I expected. Over the past year, I've tried to avoid this style for the most part. However, I found myself reminiscing about the fun summers before global warming and severe heat waves. I recalled a specific memory of my friend and me paddling a rubber raft along a river bed. The raft tumbled and flipped over, and we had to swim out. This memory combined all the summer fun, including going to malls. I thought about adding lyrics about a water park somewhere, perhaps for another song. Nevertheless, this track is another anthem for the end of August, capturing the essence of summer before fall arrives.

An experimental piece from yesterday combining the outputs of several fractal/algorithmic programs from the 90s (including one of my favorites--Omar's Fractal).  The organ-like pedal tones come from a sampled mouth organ.  Each voice proceeds at a different tempo--yet, to my surprise, the overall sound reaches a Reichian stasis of sorts.

A short test piece using Soniccouture's experimental software, "Flowstate," which creates interesting textures from harmonics drawn from samples.  The resulting textures (on 6 tracks) were subjected to further processing before being layered in overlapping sections.

When I was a teenager, I was fascinated by Musique Concrete experiments by Stockhausen and Xenakis that transformed everyday sounds through tape manipulation.  In that spirit, I recorded two albums under the "Sans Serif" pseudonym in 2008 and 2012 ("Tones for LaMonte" and "Unbound"), that manipulated very small samples by computer into large, monolithic blocks of sound.  This week, I returned to sample manipulation experiments and created this short Sans Serif soundscape study from a one-second sample of my violin playing from my last album.

I have a passion for creating and listening to many forms of electronic music, including ambient, edm and even soundtrack music with heavy use of synthesizers!  I was originally trained in the violin and played in orchestras from elementary school through high school.  I became interested in electronic music by listening to a lot of trance music in college in the late 90's.  I bought my first professional Korg Triton Studio keyboard in 2004 and began composing electronic music! I also really enjoy dancing to electronic music!
