About the instrument: The mosesa5C was used to perform Passage (for X) 4, the posted preview piece for this album. This 5th generation mosesa instrument was created in July 2014. It is roughly 48” (120cm) long. The resonators are replaceable, re-positionable, plastic bottles. The plastic gives the instrument a unique sound quality, roughly similar to a skin plate. Wood bridges were used to create greater sustain and bass response..

“Between You and We” is made up of three parts of a 41 minute piece.
Each piece is a stand alone piece but works even better heard one after the other.

The music is freely improvised in a free melodic form that I call Modern Modal Music.
It means that I use melodies and variations on them using a basic reference tone.
The melodies work to push and pull from the basic bass tone all the while taking advantage of the unique sound quality that the mosesa offers as filtered through electronic pedals amplified through a bass amp. Micro tones, overtones, scrapes, knocks, …any sound quality is welcomed in Modern Modal Music as long as it supports the expression of the melodies.

SYNOPSIS

The currently called immediate composition is the base of this duo formed by Portuguese violinist Carlos “Zíngaro”, central figure of free jazz and European experimental music, and Ulrich Mitzlaff, a German violoncellist with multidimensional collaborations in several categories.

From this initial premise, they develop their expression and create sound spaces that, without being related to specific languages, are not alien to the paths and influences of every component of their creation.

In this sense, it´s predictable that, during this duo´s performance, there´ll be an intense and diverse musical interaction. The exploratory sensitivity of these musicians goes from free jazz to contemporary music in its most random side, including many other approaches to the music of our time.
